Is it too early to decorate for Halloween? Has anyone already got their decor out?

Someone who lives on the service road which I drive on to go to my parents, has had Halloween decs up a month now. Got a stuck on spider's web stretching the width of the lounge window, 3D ghost figures in the driveway....

@Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired where do you live?

Germany. But it was the same when I lived in the NW of England.

mondaytosunday · 12/10/2025 14:28

I have an autumn wreath in my foot and put a few pumpkins out, though I won’t carve them till much closer to the day. I have some ghosts but I don’t put anything specifically Halloween related til the morning of. Walking around yesterday a couple houses have decorations out.

BrickSnail · 12/10/2025 14:29

Mine went up on the 1st Oct, do it whenever suits you. Who cares what people think, you don't need permission

DappledThings · 12/10/2025 14:29

Way too early. It's a one day thing. Up on the 30th if you really must.

I've never understood why people are so excited about Halloween as I find it a bit tacky, but as long as you're happy then it's your life and go for it

So why comment on a thread asking if anyone has their decorations up yet? She’s not asking for opinions on Halloween. Least of all yours.

Unicorn34 · 12/10/2025 14:30

We have black cats (real and fake!), bats, Halloween nostalgia etc all year round in our house! Its exciting for us once TK Maxx has its Haloween stuff in!

I caved, they’re going up! The window displays have commenced!

Good for you! I think we should do anything and everything that adds a bit of joy to our lives. If it makes you smile, do it ☺️

Zov · 12/10/2025 14:51

Yes it's too early IMO. A woman in my road has slathered her bushes with Halloween stuff; fake cobwebs, plastic witches, and plastic bats etc ... Also, KEEP OUT and DANGER signs all over her doors and windows, pumpkins on the doorstep (not carved and will be rancid and need throwing out way before Halloween) and cut up white sheets made into ghosts!!! Oh, and Happy Halloween signs in the window. (She has 2 DC aged 4 and 6.)

It's all been up since 9th October. Looks batshit. No-one else in the area has any Halloween stuff up! Autumn displays yes, any time from mid September - but putting Halloween stuff up when it's more than 3 weeks before Halloween is batshit. Even the people who have quite elaborate displays around here don't put it up til around 21st October.

Mine will go up around 5-6 days before Halloween, and stay up til the Monday after. (The 31st is on a Friday this year.) So it will all be up from around 25th October to 3rd November. 10 days tops.

As I say. This IMO! Smile

That made me laugh. Black cats, real and fake! 😆 I love black cats! 😍

Yes, it's too early & I celebrate.

The day before is the earliest I would start

This reminds me of Ebenezer Scrooge making it clear that his office workers are allowed one day off for Christmas. 😂

ExpertInAbsolutelyZero · 12/10/2025 15:06

Way too early for me but I see others decorating already.

beaniebabby · 12/10/2025 15:07

Normal to decorate in September?!

What’s the point of taking the time to decorate if you’re only “allowed” to enjoy it for 48 hours maximum?

YankSplaining · 12/10/2025 15:10

Go ahead - despite some of the attitudes on display here, it actually does not hurt anyone or more make the holiday less special to put up decorations a few weeks in advance. Have fun. 😊

I don't think there is any point! But people seem to like it. It is a one day thing, unlike Christmas so decorating for it seems even more ridiculous to me but if people like doing it they can decide for themselves what is reasonable.

Which for me would be one day.

beaniebabby · 12/10/2025 15:18

@YankSplaining the OP asked a question and people answered...

For me 30th - 1st is fine however it doesn't take me very long to put a few bits up & my enjoyment is not tied to how early I decorate.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2025 15:30

It’s nice to have up for a week or two before. So kids know to come on the 31st and they come down Nov 1 so having up for a few weeks means they get seen and enjoyed

tho I had forgotten I hung this up last night and opened curtains this am and screamed 🙀🙀😂😂

mini blondes 8 found it very funny

It's one of these things that if it makes you happy, do it. I don't go All out for Halloween and only decorate indoors. Have only got a few things out at the moment. But add to it little by little

Yes. Where I was, at least.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/10/2025 16:40

If you are putting a giant spider outside of your house, you are far, far too early. And preferably no giant spiders at all!

TBH I’m not keen on skeletons either.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/10/2025 16:44

I do like the general Autumn inspired decorations, eg Autumn wreathes and pumpkins.

BusySittingDown · 12/10/2025 16:50

I don't think that it's too early. Most people put Christmas decorations up on the 1st December for Christmas on the 25th December so I don't see why not put Halloween decorations up a couple of weeks before.

It seems pointless just to put decorations up, only to take them down a day or two later. I couldn't be bothered with that. Have them up for a while and enjoy them. 🙂

I guess I was expecting the “too early” voters to say something like, “Yes, it’s too early - wait another week.” Cultural differences and all, but I’ve never heard of anyone who puts up holiday decorations for one single day.

Halloween is a single day though. It isn't a holiday like Christmas that is 12 days. That's exactly why it's weird to me to make a fuss of decorating at all when it is one day.
