It’s not a fucking stocking filler!

I’m getting sick of gift guides with ‘stocking fillers’ that are around £15-20.

‘Perfect stocking filler for a teen’ says Glamour of a £25 lip balm kit. GQ, recommends a Stockings contain at least 10 presents - more likely about 15-20. Therefore (unless you’re super rich) they need, by nature, to be much cheaper than this.

I earn good money, I wouldn’t spend upwards of £250 on a stocking BEFORE the main presents. AIBU

Now I want to buy a car for someone, and put the car key in the stocking to reveal the gift 😂

That’s a really nasty thing to say. Take a look at yourself

You are the one being all agitated, everyone else is quite chilled about it all

I wrap everything, I must like to martyr myself 😂

Me too - although last year I swapped to using tissue paper, transformational!

and if your own children decided to put more expensive stocking fillers in their children’s stockings than within the “definition” - would you manage to hide your cats bum expression?

you think this is an irrelevant question just to ask what your response would
be if your own children did what seems to really piss you off on this thread?

What do you think ‘pisses me off’? What is your comprehension of the debate here? To make it clear for you, one last time

things I’m concerned with: retailers pushing expensive gifts under the guise of ‘stocking fillers.’ And the societal pressure this puts on parents - and teens - financially. As well as the economic and environmental impact.

things I’m not concerned with: what my children may or may not put in a stocking in 20 odd years time.

I think I get what you mean OP. It’s the idea of retailers trying to normalise a stocking being filled of expensive things, which can eventually put a lot of pressure on people to feel they are doing it “wrong” if they don’t join in and spend lots.

We get a real mix from small cheap items like body sprays, bath stuff & sweets to things like headphones or fancy make up but traditionally it would be more of the former.

cross posted 😂

Downplayit · 09/10/2025 15:21

I enjoy shopping for stockings so kids often get more than they should. But they also get a lot of stuff that they might otherwise have got earlier in the year particularly in the way of clothes and shoes. But its a no to expensive luxury items. That's definitely a gift not a stocking filler.

beaniebabby · 09/10/2025 15:22

It's the OP starting a very pissed off thread because people do things differently.

She's just disagreed with what the media counts as a filler. To me it's like an album filler eg not the main event. I agree. No idea why that makes me inadequate or adequate.

Unpaidviewer · 09/10/2025 15:23

Christmas looks different for different families. For us stocking fillers are silly little toys and chocolates. I have friends that just use them to put smaller gifts in.

EveningSpread · 09/10/2025 15:23

The word “filler” can sometimes mean “non important extra” or “guff”. It can also have connotations to do with quantity, i.e. there might be lots of it. (As in, the rice was just filler in that burrito. Or: all killer, no filler!)

Describing £25 items as “filler” is probably designed to increase pressure on people to spend loads of money.

beaniebabby · 09/10/2025 15:25

Everyone's a millionaire on the internet

Standard on MNs!

I’ve given up ‘debating’ with the one or two posters determined to be nasty and have an argument@beaniebabby. It’s not worth my attention tbh

I don’t read any mags

I buy some indulgent high end make up stocking GIFTS because I want to

Indeed. And conversely, we’re pretty wealthy and probably out-earn most on this thread ironically!

But that was not the point of the thread as people well know.

This made me smile

Wrenjay · 09/10/2025 15:28

Up to £25 would be stocking fillers for everyone (total not individual)!

Unorganisedchaos2 · 09/10/2025 15:29

Totally agree OP its madness.
The best advise Ive seen in a last few years was to put a tube of pringles in the stocking, its takes it space and most younger kids think its treat, I just try and fill the space personally 😅

ThatRealLemonCat · 09/10/2025 15:29

loving the patronising comment, as if parents and people in general can't decide how much they spend by themselves.

Impact is much much less if you buy presents that are wanted anyway, as opposed to cheap crap for the sake of it. That's what you are completely insisting on missing.

Unpaidviewer · 09/10/2025 15:30

What would be the ideal stocking fillers for a teenage girl? I have a toddler so its easy for us to get little toys cheaply that he will love. But what is the equivalent for a teenager? Surely a posh mascara, skincare or other makeup is preferable to items that will just emd up in landfill?

Calliopespa · 09/10/2025 15:31

I'm afraid I put quite expensive stuff in stockings after several years of simply not knowing where to store the tat.

Now it's small items they actually want/need, irrespective of cost. Saves me wrapping them!

Something like a watch I would keep out and make more of but I've put plenty of £15-£25 items in over the years.

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 09/10/2025 15:31

UtterlyOtterly · 09/10/2025 13:47

Stocking fillers for teens are stuff like a box of tissues, a bag of crisps, a bottle of shower gel, a bar of chocolate and a satsuma.

It's no wonder people are so grabby. I agree with you OP, those sorts of prices are stupid.

Do you have a teenager?
Tissues, crisps and a satsuma?

Oh I'm going to do that! One of ours will hit the roof with excitement! "All for me?!"

ThatRealLemonCat · 09/10/2025 15:32

It’s not a fucking stocking filler!

my bad, you don't sound pissed off AT ALL 😂

Quokka2 · 09/10/2025 15:33

Agree with you so hard OP, I hate this term but especially related to anything that isn't a satsuma or some sweets etc

Calliopespa · 09/10/2025 15:33

Mostly I just lie their gifts out on the table, what fits in the stocking goes in the stocking, what doesn't gets wrapped.

beaniebabby · 09/10/2025 15:33

Impact is much much less if you buy presents that are wanted anyway, as opposed to cheap crap for the sake of it.

Why is the alternative unwanted cheap crap? I use some high end toiletries & make up and cheaper ones. I have Laneige lip balm but much prefer Burts Bees. Cheap doesn't have to equal crap
