To ask if you'd live in a tiny home? Tiny house, motorhome, boat or caravan etc.

Just watching Tiny home tours on YouTube.

I really admire the way the homes are organised. I don't live in a big house but it's still bigger than these.

Watching has made me want to do more decluttering. And also appreciate what we have. Although the people living in these homes seem very happy.

We couldn't do it because of family staying sometimes.

The travelling with dcs makes me uncomfortable. Just them being off the radar. Not so bad if they're regularly getting checked on.

As soon as dc have moved out and settled somewhere I plan to sell up and move to a small 2 bed. Turn one of the bedrooms into a reading room/library. Just a small house filled with books and records will be perfect for me.

They can have any equity released between them. Should be enough for a deposit.

That’s my retirement plan if I outlive my husband. Sell the house, buy myself a motor home big enough for me and my dogs and chase the sun and the moon

My sister lived on a houseboat for several years for financial reasons. It was awful, cold, cramped, scruffy, getting up on cold winter mornings to go and shower on the canal side facilities. If you afford a swanky luxurious boat or whatever maybe, but the budget version - no chance.

Adarajames · 08/10/2025 16:30

Yes I’d do it although would probably need a large shed as a studio for my art stuff as it’s rather large and doesn’t fit in current house anyway!

My current place is relatively small, one bedroom, small shower room and a living room / kitchen in one, and it’s fine.

Have also lived in a self built small bender home, and spend months at a time in our last camper (and hope to again soon if can sort it affordable as desperately miss our camper 😢) so a small home would be fine, don’t tend to get cabin fever even if weathers bad as have to go out couple times at least for the dogs, and always happy just chilling out in the van in bad weather.

No because when the weather is bad you can’t exercise and you can’t get anything dry

Oooh, disagree. I live in a tiny 1 bedroom house, in a terrace with houses on either side AND behind. Can't dry washing in my 9' x 12' garden. I bought a de-humidifier. Brilliant things. AMA.

Do these tiny homes have a dishwasher? Washing machine and tumble dryer? Or hand washing and going to launderette?

Ooh, I'm getting invested in this thread! Thanks OP.

In my tiny 1 bed Topsham home, I have a washing machine. No drier. No dishwasher. (Why would I need the latter?) BUT when I was moving in, I discovered the local community centre in the street of old people's tiny bungalows, which was brilliant. As well as a Post Office, library, cafe, classes, etc. it had a laundrette. You could do your own stuff or pay for a service wash. I still use it for washing big duvets, etc.

Such a civilised and thoughtful facility for older people.

Zippedydodah · 08/10/2025 17:07

I’d love to live in a smaller place so long as it’s well constructed, warm and has all mod cons and room for my two dogs, my books and craft/art things. Definitely only me, no DH who’s incredibly untidy!

My X husband lives on a boat. When we sold our family home I decided to start renting (too old for a mortgage) and he chose to buy a boat and live on it.

I have been there a couple of times and its a lovely boat, but sooooo small. He hasn't experienced a winter there yet, so I hope it stays warm.

You're a bigger person than I am! If my ex husband lived on a boat, my only hope would be that he falls off and drowns 🙃

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 08/10/2025 17:40

Yes when the children leave home. They have a lot of toys and of course, they take up space. But it must be freeing having less to clean and tidy.

TotallyUnapologeticOmnivore · 09/10/2025 04:32

Maybe for about a week. The lack of space would very quickly become frustrating. It's not just about storage, it's about being able to move around.

I’d much prefer to live in a tiny home than spend over £1000 a month in rent to someone . Some of the tiny homes are beautiful. PP are right though in that our planning laws do not allow for them .

Yes I wouldn't like a mortgage now but I'm in my 50s.
Our house isn't huge but I know people my age and older who pay lots for mortgages or rent.
