To ask if you'd live in a tiny home? Tiny house, motorhome, boat or caravan etc.

Just watching Tiny home tours on YouTube.

I really admire the way the homes are organised. I don't live in a big house but it's still bigger than these.

Watching has made me want to do more decluttering. And also appreciate what we have. Although the people living in these homes seem very happy.

We couldn't do it because of family staying sometimes.

I couldn’t handle the reality of living in one full time, but I like watching tiny home content. Our house is very small and I like getting inspirations as to how to make the most of the space. We like small living, just not the reality of truly tiny home living.

I'm a private renter and with prices rising astronomically and lack of rental properties, I think the next generation needs to think outside the box a bit. I've watched loads of these Tiny House videos, they all have done it as it was the only affordable way to buy a property. I don't think anyone lives in one because they fancy living in a tiny space by choice. Some of them are so cleverly designed. In an ideal world I'd have lots of Tiny Houses around the globe where I could jet off to whenever I felt like it.

beadystar · 07/10/2025 18:45

Yes. Someone close to me has a camper van and a boat, both done beautifully. They can be a little cramped with two people, especially regarding bathroom arrangements and if it’s bad weather but if you’re a happy couple it’s lovely. Definitely no children or large dogs though!

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/10/2025 18:47

I would. As long as I had a normal sized house nearby for all my stuff.

I think they’d be really popular as alternative housing if it was easier to find somewhere to legally park them and live full time.

I’ve stayed in a Tiny House and loved it, it was properly insulated with a small wood burning stove - I would happily live in one, if only I could buy a small bit of land and put it there.

Unfortunately, where I live the planning laws and council restrictions mean that’s not possible.

This. Planning laws need to be updated to allow alternative affordable house solutions like tiny homes.

We did as a couple for 9 months when we were working a live in position. In summer it was easy as we were outside a lot and things like washing were hung outside. When the weather turned it was much harder, so much living go on in a small space, you have to be scrupulously tidy and it limits your choices. Id consider it again in the right circumstances, it just fits a specific life stage.

I have a number of friends who live in similar situations. Ones in a converted horse box, but lots of land and sheds too. One on a boat, in London so it's just the most affordable way to live a good life. An a family that built a house on a trailor and activity managed 2 kids and 3 years there, but did eventually outgrown it!

I definitely would if I was single. A friend of mine lives in a converted 7.5 ton horse box and it's lovely. There's a little wood burner in the living area so it gets really cosy and he's constructed a fold away balcony area on the back.

Does it have a bathroom?

I do and I love it. Bonus is I never have to have family stay with me! People can always stay nearby if they want.

I would be happy to live alone in a very small
place, as long as it had opening windows, preferably overlooking the sea! It would have to be alone though, not even with my husband. In fact, especially not with my husband!

Yes…definitely couldn’t do with DH!

TroutSpout · 07/10/2025 19:09

We used to live in a very small, two up, two down terraced house, with a postage stamp yard at the back. I really liked it.

Then I moved in with my in-laws for 4 months. They had a six bedroom Victorian villa, and I become a total convert to space, light, and high ceilings. We couldn’t afford a house like that but we did buy a smaller version.

I confess, I admire the ingenuity of some of the very small properties / accommodation but I don’t think I could really go back unless I had to.

amibeingaknob · 07/10/2025 19:09

Id love to do it. Do people buy them outright as well as a plot of land? I dont see how thats cheap though. I looked into it, and it was expensive to do that, or buy a houseboat. I think people think these things are so cheap but they aren't. Obviously cheaper than a house, but you can't get mortgages on them.

ditismooi · 07/10/2025 19:17

Had a tiny rented student studio flat with a bedroom mezzanine and a large balcony in the 90s in the Netherlands ( god knows what it would cost now ) Looked cool but I was a complete slattern and it was permanently a tip ! 😂 cooking your dinner under your bed effectively is not nice!

Oaktreet · 07/10/2025 19:25

If I was single and without children yeah. I like the low maintenance and self sufficiency aspect. I just feel like it would feel so manageable, I don't need much to be happy either. Food, people, and a few hobbies and I'm fine.

PersonIrresponsible · 07/10/2025 19:38

So far, I've lived in a

A) Tiny Home
B) Static Caravan
C) Narrowboat
D) Converted Van
E) Tent

and spent time in a motorhome.

By far, D has been the best because you can travel far and wide. I LOVE the sounds of nature at night. Plus you can just pop off wherever, whenever. Having done it to write a book, I ended up staying in it because I genuinely fell in love with the lifestyle.

B was the worst of all worlds. Cold, wet and too close to other people.

C was good but limited in terms of distance and convenience. Also need to be able to go locks solo which I found hard. However, I loved watching the wildlife

A would have been better if it felt more "bespoke designed" like a shepherd's hut than an overpriced, under-spaced rental.

E was utterly miserable but it meant I got to walk across America - so worth it in the end!

I've done them all alone. I'd never share a motorhome, van or tent with another human being again. The cat, however, is a marvellous space-mate.

Still want to try glamping for a year and living on a yacht....

CurlewKate · 07/10/2025 19:43

I live in a boat-although not a particularly tiny one. AMA.

is it a static houseboat or can you travel?

I lived on a teeny tiny canal boat for a year quite some years ago.

When my kids are all grown and flown I would love to live on a boat or in a caravan again.

This is my fantasy. As long as i was on my own. I am lucky to live in a large house with incredibly messy people. Who I love, obviously. But I often fantasise about a tiny little space of my own.

Orpheya · 07/10/2025 19:49

If 1984 happens and we survive it, perhaps we'll all start from tiny homes

timoteigirl · 07/10/2025 19:53

Do these tiny homes have a dishwasher? Washing machine and tumble dryer? Or hand washing and going to launderette?

MagicLoop · 07/10/2025 19:57

Nope. A decluttered, minimalist-style biggish living space appeals to me, not a tiny one. Imo tiny spaces feel restricted and crowded even without much at all in them!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/10/2025 19:59

I don’t know how I’d find it longer term but I do like holidays on boats. I wouldn’t like having a garden though.
hm… a boat and a piece of land with a large shed on it would probably be cheating.

verybighouseinthecountry · 07/10/2025 20:14

Many of them do have DC, I imagine they throw out all the pruck before the camera crew come over. I follow some Travellers who live in a trailer (touring caravan) with up to 3 kids and I've no idea where they keep clothes/toys/books, or even hang up their coats as they always look so minimalist.

myturf · 07/10/2025 20:47

I lived on a canal boat growing up (half the time) - the space wasn't the issue so much as the faff of it! But I could definitely be happy in a tiny home if I didn't need to do all the boat-specific bits. You adapt very quickly!

I'll have to Google net floors.

Here is one that has the net flooring. I like how it lets the light through but I’d be terrified to walk on it.

I have, and I would (probably will) again. My house now is still very small by everyone elses standards but we like it a lot.
