Crap Birthday present from my sister to my son!

Jooleshop · 06/10/2025 21:15

I have 2 sisters and between us we have 5 boys.
My son is the youngest and both my sister's have 2 boys each . One is a single parent like me and the other is married.
We have agreed between us to spend £20 on all presents for birthdays and Christmas.
My sister asked me what my son would like for his birthday.... today and I said organic cotton PJ's. My sister is always banging on about organic cotton so I expected a cosy pair of PJ's.
We had a party earlier...I supplied fizz, nibbles and lots of cake.
My sister gave my son a pair of Amazon cotton PJ's at £11.99!!!!
They are thin and a bit shit really...
I have swallowed this bug feel really pissed off and used!!!
Is this unreasonable???

Really? I categorically wouldn’t have been excited about PJs as a kid 😂😂 they’d have to be pretty special to get me excited even now haha!

Mini blondes gets excited by stitch pjs - and themes ones like Halloween and Xmas

she has a fab pair for Halloween this year

My kids loved new pyjamas. From when they were little to now they are at university. They never specified the fabric though.

Yes, but presumably new PJs, supplied by you as a necessity, not PJs in lieu of birthday presents (unless maybe a pair of specific character PJs that they particularly wanted).

Has she had to give up her birthday presents for these Halloween PJs?

You’re one of these people who think guests should “cover their plate” at a wedding, aren’t you?

ShodAndShadySenators · 07/10/2025 09:26

I asked my SIL what to get DN for his birthday, she specified a black sweatshirt. Poor kid was so disappointed to get it, his little face fell and he said quite pitifully, "I don't like black". I felt so shit but I didn't like to drop his mum in it by saying it was what she told me to get. I wish I had now! (I don't really like getting kids clothes as presents unless they've specifically suggested it)

OP stop checking how much people have spent, you'll be a lot happier. Or start buying cheap stuff for your DN (only the cheap PJs sister of course!) to even it up, if that'll make you feel better. What did the other sister buy, did her present meet your requirements?

Really, is your DS happy with the presents he got for his birthday? That's the main thing, isn't it.

I’ve just looked online and she could have got quality organic PJs for that price.

She thought of a way to be stingy.

Is it stingy? Perhaps they are what she could afford? Perhaps they have a print she thought the child would like? Perhaps she forgot and ordered last minute, so these were the ones available on time?

Buying her own child organic cotton pyjamas but getting cheap Amazon cotton pyjamas for her nephew speaks volumes.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 07/10/2025 09:42

Christ on a fucking bike, I wish I had as little to worry about as you. God help you if you ever get any actual problems.

MellowPinkDeer · 07/10/2025 09:49

I’m just processing this situation and wondering how people have the time to be this obsessed over stuff that doesn’t matter one bit!! Time for a job or a life or something I think OP!

DinoLil · 07/10/2025 10:05

Organic pyjamas???

Seriously????

What has the world come to?

I've bought my adult DS and his partner some non organic polyester PJs with humorous logos for Christmas. Cost £8 a pair. I do hope they're not offended that they're not organic.

zingally · 07/10/2025 10:10

What a boring present for a young child! Organic cotton PJs! Are they in a particular style or a character that your child especially likes?

Oh well, lesson learned, adjust the budget accordingly for the next child's birthday. But it's also not really worth getting sniffy with your sister over a mis-judged present.

Tbrg · 07/10/2025 10:16

What?! They’re not organic?! . . . Poor little Tarquin is just going to have to wear (faints) cheap Amazon PJs 😱! 🤣

Come on OP, you know you are being unreasonable.

Non-organic AND polyester? You’ll be lucky if they’re still speaking to you in January! 😂

Not to me if it's a favourite character or whatever. Or maybe things are tight this month.

Then she should have said let’s cut the budget to £10.

NotMeekNotObedient · 07/10/2025 16:23

Not worth fretting over OP. But I get it, her DC's get quality and yours gets Amazon. It's probably nothing more than her being busy and it was a last min gift.

I think you're getting a slightly rough deal here.

My DD4 has asked for mermaid socks for Xmas so that's what she'll get in her stocking!

People are acting like the Pj's are the only thing your DS is going to get. I bet he got the nerf guns, sticker books, plastic tat too. Plus a decent gift from his parents. Kids don't need 20 new toys!

She asked what you wanted and sort of got it - why ask if you don't want to get something useful/liked. I really appreciate when people ask as I don't want rubbish from temu that will be broken and binned in a couple of weeks. I always give a few present ideas so people have a choice. And of course say just a small token would be fine!

There will be some parents who are struggling for money and would appreciate a useful gift for their child. I'm glad my MIL is buying some beautiful clothes for DD for Xmas as I'll be on maternity leave.

DiscoBob · 07/10/2025 16:28

I bet the child doesn't even know what the word 'organic' means. You just wanted something that sounded fancy. Your family sound very materialistic and transactional. Well, you do.

Why not get the child something they genuinely did actually want and ask for?

Pineapplewaves · 07/10/2025 18:06

Personally I would have just asked for pyjamas and been happy with a couple of cheap pairs from Primark. I think you asking for “organic cotton” has resulted in her giving you the only pair of 100% cotton pyjamas she could find? Primark etc tend to be made from other materials too. Next time be less specific. If the money bothers you spend £11.99 on her next child’s birthday present in retaliation!

Skybluepinky · 07/10/2025 19:18

Just buy your own children presents if you are going to moan about gifts, tell others not to bother.

HaveItOffTilICough · 07/10/2025 19:52

No, spend £12 exactly. If your gift comes to £11.99, sellotape a penny piece into the card. That way you have made your point, whilst still spending more than she did, and you WILL HAVE WON.

That's what I thought that when I read that too.

PS. Piff paff poff.

Grammarnut · 09/10/2025 21:55

I can't believe a little boy wanted pyjamas!

Bluedenimdoglover · 10/10/2025 20:44

This really not worth worrying about. Move on.

Wait what.. you supplied “fizz, nibbles and lots of cake” at your own child’s birthday party.

And in return, poor Theodore Junior didn’t get good quality organic cotton pyjamas, as requested by him.

However will he rest?

You sound like a fucking menace of a sister/ aunt and deserve a good boot in the chuffter for this carryon.
