Crap Birthday present from my sister to my son!

Jooleshop · 06/10/2025 21:15

I have 2 sisters and between us we have 5 boys.
My son is the youngest and both my sister's have 2 boys each . One is a single parent like me and the other is married.
We have agreed between us to spend £20 on all presents for birthdays and Christmas.
My sister asked me what my son would like for his birthday.... today and I said organic cotton PJ's. My sister is always banging on about organic cotton so I expected a cosy pair of PJ's.
We had a party earlier...I supplied fizz, nibbles and lots of cake.
My sister gave my son a pair of Amazon cotton PJ's at £11.99!!!!
They are thin and a bit shit really...
I have swallowed this bug feel really pissed off and used!!!
Is this unreasonable???

Amazon pj's are great. Yabu. You asked and got what you wanted.

TheDandyLion · 06/10/2025 21:38

Where would you get organic quality cotton pjs for £20?

Quite easy to find Polarn O Pyret or Frugi on sale for around that.

nomas · 06/10/2025 21:49

I would just stop doing presents.

This is too much money to soend.

Bestfootforward11 · 06/10/2025 21:50

I’m guessing maybe your sister ran out of time and ordered on Amazon? Or maybe she’s bought them before and they’ve gone down well? Or maybe she just liked the look of them. Does it really matter that much? I doubt your child is questioning the quality of the PJs. Honestly life is too short. I’ve bought some nice gifts for my nieces and nephews and I’ve sometimes bought emergency random gifts because I forgot or ran out of time. My siblings are not fussed in the least (and they’ve done the same for my DD). If you want to spend less on your siblings kids, that’s up to you. You mentioned they have 2 kids each so I guess you are peeved that theoretically you fork out more but I think you are looking at it too transactionally. Buy what you can comfortably afford and are happy with and give in good spirit.

Only because the quality was so poor...I couldn't believe my sister had spent £20 on such a poor quality item... Only to check and see they were cheap and not quality!

I’ve just looked online and she could have got quality organic PJs for that price.

She thought of a way to be stingy.

WeNeedToTalkAboutIT · 06/10/2025 21:55

can you really get quality organic cotton for that price?

YABU. Maybe she's spent more like £30 on his Christmas present. If she ordered online maybe she didn't realise they'd be shitty quality. But YABVU. She got your kid a gift, and one that you asked for, all be it not the exact type you wish she'd have got. Follow the Christmas present AIBUs on here in December and realise how lucky you are!

PS I ran out of time and got my friend's daughter a gift from Amazon this month. I don't earn a lot, I don't usually have Prime, so the £12 mad science kit effectively cost me £20 because I also did Prime to get next day delivery. If she doesn't have or doesn't usually have Prime, she may have factored in the expense of the postage too.

Househassles · 06/10/2025 21:55

Can you link the item she bought? Thanks.

Where would you get a set of ‘organic cotton’ pyjamas for £20, though? The difference between a £20 set of kids’ pyjamas and a £12 set of kids’ pyjamas is negligible.

Also, there is no way your child asked for organic cotton and assuming he’s not 17 or something, he’ll have outgrown them before they’re worn out regardless of quality. You’re being absurd.

PorridgeEater · 06/10/2025 22:04

I doubt your son is assessing the quality of the pyjamas.
She got what you wanted, be happy with that.

Ocelotfeet27 · 06/10/2025 22:10

It depends on your relationship. I might say - Bob loves his new PJs, the Bluey design is his favourite! But FYI the quality isn't great so I maybe wouldn't buy from there again as they've already shrunk in the wash

But most likely I'd just let it go. I definitely wouldn't fuss about the money.

FlockofSquirrels · 06/10/2025 22:11

Why would you feel used of all things? And why are you talking about how you provided food and drink for your own son's party like that's relevant - you don't think that birthday gifts are supposed to be some sort of reimbursement from party attendees, do you?

Laura95167 · 06/10/2025 22:12

A £20 limit or £20?

Although either way YABU becuase you checked the cost of a gift you recieved from a family member for your son

Idontpostmuch · 06/10/2025 22:16

Get a life.

R0ckandHardPlace · 06/10/2025 22:17

I’d find yourself a good therapist and go NC. I’ve known people develop PTSD after receiving cotton pyjamas that aren’t organic.

Nineandahalf · 06/10/2025 22:19

Are Amazon pyjamas great?
A lot of the clothing on there appears to be from china - same sort of standard as shein. I wouldn't necessarily think they'd be made to the right standards. I don't think I'd like my child in them if there were naked flames around !

3luckystars · 06/10/2025 22:20

Is the rule written down that’s exactly £20 must be spent?😂

Do you know how grateful you should be for what you have around you?

You need to go and have a talk with yourself. You have seriously lost your way.

DrowningInSyrup · 06/10/2025 22:22

I hate the entitled posts about I didn't get the gift I wanted, it was late, not what I asked for, how dare she/he. Always come across as poncy. Accept the gift with good grace and stop being so ingrateful. Also next time a gift isn't good enough for you, consider that you don't know everyone's circumstances.

I think you’re going to be surprised how little ‘quality’ £20 will buy you.

Screamingabdabz · 06/10/2025 22:24

Sorry I know not the point, but what difference does it make to cotton with it being organic? Genuine question.

3luckystars · 06/10/2025 22:24

You are also supposed to have a cake at your own child’s party, all the effort was all meant to be for your son, not for your sisters.

Kattley · 06/10/2025 22:25

Ha, ha, ha. This must be a post where someone wants a bit of attention. How old is your son? I find it hard to believe any lad has asked for organic cotton pyjamas. Ha, ha, ha. Yes, OP, you are being unreasonable.

Bloody hell, behave! DP once got a blank video cassette for Christmas, from his late uncle. The uncle had £500 000 in his bank when he died ( irrelevant I know!)

A blank one?? Worst gift ever? 😂

‘Fizz, nibbles and cake’ is bare minimum when you’re hosting party? Not sure what that has to do with anything lol

Rubyupbeat · 06/10/2025 22:29

I can't believe a little boy would ask for pyjamas full stop.
Surely a toy would be better received.

Frankenpug23 · 06/10/2025 22:31

really??? Most kids want money just ask for the cash next time, so he can buy his own cotton, organic pyjamas!!
