Astounded by trip to shopping centre today

I usually do my shopping online these days, but went shopping with a friend today to a big centre about 30 minutes away from us (I won’t name it incase outing).

Is it me, or has the minimum size stocked by the majority of shops gradually increased in recent times? I was asking shop assistants whether they had any size 6 stock and received blank stares half the time!

No wonder physical shops seem to be on the way out.

Needless to say, I’ll be sticking to online.

A pleasant experience aside from that though and lovely to see my friend so it wasn’t a wasted day.

In the UK, I don’t think size 6 has ever been common. I know when I got married, over 40 years ago, an aunt, who was a size 6, went to a specialist shop to get an outfit for our wedding.

wow, but this thread brought out all the jealousy. some people are slimmer than others, no need to insult them any more than there is to insult those who are larger.

Unnecessary and rude.

I suppose all comments on MN are unnecessary. I’ve explained the context of my comment. I think it’s flippant rather than rude but hey ho you can’t please everyone

Clothing - with the right brand/style I can sometimes get away with a 4 but there was no change of finding that today! The joys of being a teeny size I guess, I’ve got genetics to thank for that!

I don’t think I’d want to thank anything for being size 4 / 6. I like my boobs and arse.

I'm not big (and definitely not jealous 😂) I just think the OP is stealth boasting and their subsequent unpleasantness confirms my original impression.

Where have I said that? Forget the gym, I think you need a trip to Specsavers!

You are deleting posts so I think you know you that aren't coming across well. Society stopped the glamourising of having clothes in size 4 and 6 because it's not healthy to set an expectation that women should have skeletal frames! You've no right to moan at the bigger sizes being on offer and saying there should be less of those and more for unhealthily thin women?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/10/2025 23:32

Oh yay 🙌 it’s a teeny tiny thread. Heads off to Reddit…….

(Reddit MNTs that is….)

It’s not rocket science is it - if they stocked less of those sizes, they’d have space for smaller ones? Have I missed something, sorry if so.

Yes you have missed something. They don't sell enough size 6's to warrant selling them in store. There is no point reducing larger sizes that sell well, to replace them with small sizes that don't. It's not rocket science is it.

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 04/10/2025 20:56

It's been many years since I lived in the UK, but I don't ever remember seeing a size 6 in clothing stores.

ditto

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/10/2025 23:38

When I was a teen (90s) you often couldn’t find a size 8 - which I was at that time - never mind a 6.

Apparently going even further back, there was a general sense of “here’s 10, 12 and 14, take your pick”.

Now you find various shops going down to a size 4, whilst others go well up into the 20s. I think there’s more choice than there was.

Each to their own. I would hate to be a size 6, but would love to be a size 10.

ninjahamster · 04/10/2025 23:40

My daughter is a size 6 and doesn’t seem to have an issue finding clothes!

Vaguelyclassical · 04/10/2025 23:40

I wonder if the OP is in fact a Yank. Size 6 in the states is size 10 in the UK and thus small but not crazy small.

Got to say that I'm a 6 and not close to skeletal, I'm actually very curvy, I'm just short / petite. Bodies are all very different - my BMI is 22 so I'm not close to being unhealthy.

WannaFOffOnHoliday · 04/10/2025 23:42

You might be better off looking for the bigger childs sizes

I dont think i have shopped anywhere that sells a size 4 or 6.
I think the smallest iv seen is an 8

clipboardz · 04/10/2025 23:43

people forget about height which is very relevant to size.
A size 6 at 5ft 2 looks very different to a 5ft 10 one.

DrowningInSyrup · 04/10/2025 23:43

Harrietta82 · 04/10/2025 21:46

Apologies for anyone I’ve offended…I wasn’t expecting to read the digs and I appreciate MN deleting one of the worst comments.

If you are insecure about your weight, then rather than take it out on people online, you could always try to do something about it. Diet, exercise and discipline. Heck, there are even jabs available now!

You've not offended me, but I think it's hilarious to say apologies to those I've offended, and then go on to be really offensive, in a wonderfully superior, derogatory manner 😆😆

Florencesndzebedee · 04/10/2025 23:44

Think the OP has jumped the shark with their later posts. There have been a few threads like this tonight on Mumsnet.

Spendysis · 04/10/2025 23:45

I have always been a size 4/6 it’s always been like this I worked in retail for years shops stock the popular sizes everything else needs to be ordered it was a nightmare getting my uniform as they only started at a 6 and being 4ft11 petite was often to long on me . I used to find shops aimed at teenagers top shop Jane Norman stocked more smaller sizes.
despite being 48 i sometimes shop in the kids section Zara primark etc although primark ladies section does stock small sizes they don’t do petite so no good for jeans and trousers

user1492757084 · 04/10/2025 23:47

Just ask and the shop can usually get in the correct size for you. Then you get to journey again to the shopping centre.

newrubylane · 04/10/2025 23:48

M&S? I found one size 6 in the entire shop the last time I looked.

To be honest, it's always been difficult finding size 6 in shops IME. Although you do tend to find them more in shops aimed at a younger shopper - H&M, Zara, New Look, Primark.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/10/2025 23:48

Used to work in a clothes shop. Never sold size six.

Yes, absolutely, this is me too.

The problem with the OP is she thinks a smaller size/being thin is something to aspire to. It really isn’t. It’s just a way of reducing women to the number on their clothing labels. It’s to stop them thinking about more important stuff and to set them against each other.

What we have in the shops now is vanity sizing. If you look online at the size charts the measurements for a 6 are typically 32 inch bust, 24 inch waist and 34 inch hips. No way are these my measurements. My weight and size have stayed roughly the same for 45 years. But when I was 18 I was a size 10, when I was about 30 I became an 8 and now I’m a 6. I haven’t changed; the clothes have. So it’s ridiculous to read anything into it. It is literally just a number.

Many many years ago (30? So beforeonline shopping).... I was a size 8. There were very few available unless it was a mainstream shop like next or m&s. 6 was even rarer. Yabu

99bottlesofkombucha · 04/10/2025 23:56

I would have thought they do stock size 6. I’m not a 6 anymore but used to be 6-8 and never had a problem finding clothes and I’m sure I still see that size in now.
