To not want seamonkeys in my living room?

Fluppys · 04/10/2025 19:06

DH had seamonkeys as a teen.
Recently he got a little set and grew them. Great.
But then his autism kicked in and they became his new fixation and now we have 4 of the small plastic tank sets and two 20 litre tanks in my living room complete with lights, air pumps etc.

Its not like having fish, you can't even see them!

They eat algae so the tanks look filthy and to top it off they are placed on my late grandmothers sidetable as there is genuinely no where else for them to go in here!

Im worried about the side table getting damaged and that is where I usually put my halloween bits and my nativity/decorations at Christmas.

Theres no other room they could go bar out bedroom and i think that would be even worse.

Obviously I can't ask him to pour them away but, omg, i hate them!!

This is really an awful thing to say but.....
If by accident ordinary tap water went into one of those thanks the sea monkeys would die off. That would be one less.
Sorry.
Im not saying to do that.
But that's possibly the reason also why the tanks can't be merged. They are very sensitive to their environment i think ?

So’s the OP. I don’t blame her.

Darner · 05/10/2025 08:14

My son used to keep sea monkeys. But he was a small child. I tipped them into the pond when interest inevitably waned, until the next lot.

I simply find it impossible to believe an adult. ND or not, is keeping them in several tanks.

cannyvalley · 05/10/2025 09:28

I find this hilarious (sorry) and so relatable.
OP I feel for you. I can never predict what my wife’s next special interest will be. Luckily for us (if it’s a really inconvenient one) they don’t tend to last very long.

I hope he gets bored of the sea monkeys soon. Defo get them off grans table though x

GameofPhones · 05/10/2025 12:36

" seamonkeys are literally bred to feed other fish" so are mice, which are intelligent and adorable creatures in their own right. Ethical dilemma. Some creatures have to die so that others can live. Ferrets, for example are 'obligate carnivores', meaning they can't survive without meat.

Mini blondes got some at Xmas. Amazingly still going. It’s weird as we had one left maybe 2/3w ago and now have 4

how the hell can the single one have managed to impregnate herself

I couldn’t deal with large tank but fine to have the mini one that’s maybe 15x10cm that came with the kit

I didn’t expect them to still be alive 10mths later

There were probably already fertilised eggs just waiting to hatch when the others died off.

viques · 05/10/2025 12:50

It could be worse OP,at least sea monkeys stay in their tank/s. As children we had stick insects, ordinary ones , not the giant ones you can get now. They sometimes escaped and for years afterwards, long after the contained ones had all been given away to unsuspecting friends, we would occasionally spot one taking a wobbly walk up a wall or curtains. Don’t know what the freeranging ones ate, possibly each other.

Nearly50omg · 05/10/2025 12:53

He needs do advertise them on fb and give them away to children 😂

MedievalNun · 05/10/2025 13:02

Reminds me of when my DB got stick insects when we were kids in the 80s. Mum was ok with 1 or 2. And a small tank. Except they kept breeding. The last straw for her was when she went to pick up what she thought was an empty sprig of grapes (the twiggy bits) and it walked up her hand.

When dad managed to get her down off the ceiling he demanded DBruv rehome them. I think the primary school took some.

Not sure what to suggest for the Sea Monkeys except protecting the table - if you don’t want glass, you can buy lengths of protective cloth in the Range.

Do they look like this? 😆

when I was a young 'un gullible bugger I was swayed by that very same advert and picture and bought some. Lived about a week and was left with murky water. I learned my lesson then- until I bought some X-ray specs!

Never had the nerve to send off fit XRaySpex.

What did they actually do?

Salvadoridory · 05/10/2025 13:22

Husband not son. Theres the clue. To another poster who suspects and asks why lie about sea monkeys? It all sounds so tragic and depressing, why would you want to make up the husband, the living room or the sea monkeys, the monkeys being the least depressing part.

Bot all...mine was a plastic frame of the very cheap variety (the sort that had joke false nose and moustache on) with a red feather glued where a lens would be. The idea was that looking through gave the wearer the illusion of seeing bones when you looked at your hand etc.
Paid good money for those buggers as well advertisers dream

I did kinda hope once the one died ………

Fluppys · 05/10/2025 14:55

Am baffled at the people thinking this isn't true.

Of all the stuff people get up to. All the weird hobbies people have and especially ND people and their obbessions, they really think its impossible to have seamonkeys 😅

Sounds so messy and cluttered (and leaves no space for seasonal stuff)

Aye because a load of gaudy pumpkins and live laugh love shite from B&M isn't cluttered at all.

Fair enough about the table, tell him to put up a shelf / get another table as you want yours back.

Some relationships sound exhausting though.

I nagged my parents to buy me those enticing-looking trainable mini-humanoids but my dad was one of those people who thought practically anything not a basic necessity of life was a 'waste of money' so I never got them. In this case he was 100% correct 😂

OP you’ve brown the golden rule for a thread about your husbands annoying hobby. People suspect it’s not real because you’ve actually mentioned the hobby. You should have been mysterious about the outing hobby, whilst using other hobbies as an example:

The equipment for my husband’s hobby is taking over the living room. There are several large interconnected containers (think home brewing kit ) and I’m worried about damage to furniture. How can I broach it with him when he’s so excited about his new yeast?

I have 1950s Americana style Halloween decorations that sit on that one sidetable. Nothing is from B&M.

Not that there is anything wrong with B&M I regularly go there for tuna and dog treats 😅 But the home decor is not my style.

My DC progressed from sea monkeys to ant farms. They lived in sand and they seemed to have no problem escaping the container.

See them off? How horrible.

Yep, and I spray greenfly on my houseplants.

TY78910 · 05/10/2025 21:47

Hahahaha that’s so funny. Why sea monkeys when you can have fish / things that are actually good to look at.

Bought DD one of those seamonkey tanks from a toy shop and they got quite big actually. But they did die off over three months slowly. By the time there were three left I flushed them down the toilet - couldn’t stand the sight of that ghastly plastic “tank”. I did consider releasing in to local lake but apparently that’s not allowed after googling
