Does anyone else find the concept of sleep mental?

Probably a very weird thought process but I’m just laying here, ready to go to sleep thinking how strange it is that we spend so much of our life unconscious. If I sleep from 11pm-7am which is normal for me, I will have slept the equivalent of my work day. All of the things I’ve done during the day, meals I’ve eaten, people I’ve spoken to, places I’ve been - and I’ll spend that same amount of time just laid in bed asleep. Also find it weird how the world just carries on while we are oblivious to it.

Sorry I know this is incredibly random 😂

I'm awake now because I went to bed ridiculously early for me, but I was tired.

Such an interesting thread. It's very odd that you don't remember the moment you've fallen asleep.

I have two recurring dreams. One is that I have more rooms in my house that are full of lovely things and my mum is always there - she died over a year ago, but I had these dreams before she died and she said she had the same dreams.

The second is that I have to get somewhere but I'm always delayed by silly reasons and when I finally get to the destination, I realise I haven't got my bag - this is a stress dream and I always tell myself in the dream not to worry and wake up and I do.

Actually three recurring dreams - the last being the unprepared for exam dream and it's always A level History - which I did prepare for in real life.

Much love to those who are suffering, I hope writing everything down on this thread has helped in some small way 🎉

With the language thing, I often wonder who decided the local translations of foreign places (towns/countries/cities) was necessary and what they should be? I mean, why did we think Deutschland should be called Germany, here in the UK? It's not even similar? Why not just Deutschland? Netherlands - Holland? Why?

When you think about the fact that every country has it's own unique 'translation' of a place name - that means there are around 200 completely different words for England. WHY NOT JUST LEAVE IT ALONE? We don't feel the need to call someone called Pedro, Peter - so why the places? Makes no sense and has annoyed me for forty years.

CRCGran · 04/10/2025 18:39

Another insomniac here..... be very grateful you can get a night's sleep. It's hell being unable to fall asleep, or stay asleep. If I get 2 to 3 hours a night (not necessarily all together) I consider myself lucky. It's torture.

Middlemarch123 · 04/10/2025 18:42

Does anyone else feel like they are dropping from a great height just before they fall asleep? It’s so severe sometimes that it wakes me up again! The jolt shakes the bed and wakes up my three cats who share with me! Then I’m scared to go back to sleep in case it happens again. It’s horrible. Is it just me?

It's called a hypnic jerk!

Why Do I Feel Like Falling In My Sleep? | Sleep Science Explained

The sensation of falling during sleep is caused by hypnic jerks, a natural muscle spasm occurring as the body transitions from wakefulness to sleep.

I have this picture in my head of the planet seen from space, and all the awake people are represented by a yellow light and all the asleep people are represented by a blue light, so you can watch the wave of yellow lights becoming blue and the blue lights becoming yellow as the world turns.

I probably need some kind of counselling.

The whole concept of the earth turning and the sun disappearing every day never ceases to amaze me. Where I live the sunsets are phenomenal, every single evening I watch the sun hit the horizon and disappear yet I still hold my breath and half expect it to stop/pause. Humans are so powerful yet we can't stop the planets aligning.

Who decided the standard working week was 5 days, with only 2 off, and that 9-5 was the predominant working day? And why?!

US govt/military created quite a lot of the recreational drugs industry by searching for this holy grail.

And also proved that sleep deprivation causes psychosis within a few days.

I like sleep. It's practice for being dead. The concept of functionally not existing for a while and then returning - I find that pretty mind blowing.

Edited

I think of sleep as practice for dying too. I wonder, as I drift off, that if I died in my sleep would I know I’d died, or would I just carry on in a never ending sleep? At what stage would I know I’d died, if ever? Sometimes when I wake in the morning, I think how pleased I am that my mind &
body remembered to wake up again! I’ve never voiced this before!

MaddestGranny · 04/10/2025 19:56

Sleeping is something every organism, from the most basic to the most complex, seems to do. It's a very basic & essential thing and it has very many functions. There is a great paperback, by Matthew Walker, titled "Why We Sleep". It's available on Audible Audiobooks - if you want to listen to it while you are failing to fall asleep - as well as in paperback and on Kindle.
The book is utterly fascinating.

I spend an unreasonable amount of time imagining super-evolved aliens looking at earth and observing humans going about their lives. I always think they must find sleeping bizarre. Also dancing, singing and playing sports.

Edited

I do this too. Especially watching my kids football games in an astroturf.. I imagine they think, look at the little humans shutting themselves in the cage to kick a round thing back and forward for fun.
Like hamsters climbing on a wheel to amuse themselves!

Imagine if someone invented an infusion or medicine or something that could mean you don’t need to sleep at all. Would you use it?

No. I love sleep too much. I don’t care if people think it’s a waste of time or whatever, I love it!!

SereneSquirrel · 04/10/2025 20:55

blackheartsgirl · 03/10/2025 02:04

Biphasic sleep fascinates me too. Sleeping all night in one burst is not how humans evolved, it was only since the Industrial Revolution that humans started to sleep on one long stretch.

when I was a single parent and my two eldest were toddlers I used to put them to bed about seven, then go to sleep for a few hours , wake up around half ten, stay up for a few hours then go back to sleep till 6 or 7.

even now I struggle with sleep and I often have two hours in the day. I work split shifts so doable then sleep about half twelve ish am.

but I’m wired tonight as I’ve had to put my dog to sleep this morning and I just can’t switch my mind off.

So sorry about your dog xx

Crispsrule · 04/10/2025 21:19

I think about it quite often. I honestly would happily never sleep if I could get away with it. I could definitely fill the hours. I only sleep 6 hours a night and can definitely get by on 4 as long as it’s not on consecutive nights. It’s a shame, I’d have a tidier house if I didn’t have to sleep!

What I find weird is that whole roads, blocks of flats, hotels and everyone inside is asleep! Everyone oblivious to the world. Bizarre

Omg this 100%. I thought it was just me who found that weird 😂 it blows my mind that everyone sleeps. For some reason my brain can't comprehend that even evil people, like murderers, lie down, quite vulnerably in a way, and go to sleep at the same time and in the same way as most other people in the country.

The having to lay down and pretend to sleep to be able to sleep gets me.

I find the fact we all lie down to sleep v weird. Like, I couldn’t imagine queen elizabeth lying down , or famous people or some people I work with, lying down and sleeping!! 😅

Delatron · 04/10/2025 22:36

I think about this often Mainly because I’m a bad sleeper. I think sleep should be optional. If you get it, fine. But if you have a bad night’s sleep it shouldn’t ruin your day. Like it does.

Dontsayyouloveme · 04/10/2025 22:36

cakedup · 02/10/2025 23:29

Yes I think about this too, sleep is weird weird!

I don't understand when people say they love sleep though....maybe the lying down and relaxing bit but otherwise how can you love something you're not even conscious of??

Another thought just occurred to me, when I was in my 20s I went through a bout of terrible depression and I slept loads....I couldn't cope with life so I just slept for hours so i didnt have to deal with anything or feel depressed, it was like opting out.

I love sleep because of how much better I feel the next day after a decent sleep, compared to how shit i feel if I don’t. Also, as an over thinker, neurotic worrier with MH issues, sleep can be just the best break i can give my brain imo. Plus I love my bed… it’s so comfortable… 🥰🥰

Delatron · 04/10/2025 22:44

I think that’s the annoying thing though. How important sleep is. I just want it to be optional.

Netcurtainnelly · 04/10/2025 22:45

Love my sleep and my bed . We can't be on the go all the time. Life is full and tiring.
I wish we didn't dream though. I dream alot and would love not too.

CrispsPlease · 04/10/2025 22:45

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 02/10/2025 23:01

Sleep is very weird. Dreams are even weirder - you lie down in a darkened room, lose consciousness and then have wild hallucinations for hours. Then you get up, brush your teeth and pretend that everything's perfectly normal.

I needed the laughing emoji for this 🤭

SalamiSammich · 04/10/2025 22:49

I find it weird that we sleep next to our partners because we feel a primal reflex of safety in a group... but we put our kids in a totally different room alone!

Like, it's obviously fine, but also weird when you stop and think about it like an animal instinct!

CrispsPlease · 04/10/2025 22:52

I do totally get your thought process. I often have thoughts like this.

I often catch myself at work thinking "this is all made up. These roles, this job, these qualifications. They don't actually exist. Humans have just come along and made up degrees and nurses and solicitors. None of it actually exists. It's all made up by humans. We're just dots on a tiny little globe in the universe. Us humans with our silly made up jobs and silly made up qualifications"

Pregnancy is alien too and we all pretend it's normal. You're literally harbouring a human in your midsection and can see feet poking through at times. Another human Is growing inside your body....
