To put Halloween decorations up tomorrow?

Dd is finally of an age where she’s excited about Halloween. She’s very excited to decorate the house (I have some old decorations from a Halloween party I had a few years ago). AIBU to put them up with her tomorrow? Is it too early?

How old is your dd? If 3 then it’s too early because she will be thinking it’s tomorrow! If 10 then ask her when she wants to put them up. In between well can they understand they need to wait?

She’s almost 4. Reading these posts has made me rethink how we do this for her sake too. We’re putting autumn stuff up today (appropriate with this gloomy weather) and we’re saving the Halloween stuff for later, particularly maybe on a day when it’s raining hard or she’s having a bad day, to cheer her up.

I speak from experience when I say that crawling babies are best dressed up as spiders - especially when the outfit has sticky out leg attachments and the crawl along the floor! Excellent entertainment!

This is brilliant! Sadly youngest is only 4 months.

Yep, I went to my local Home Bargains today. One aisle of Halloween stuff.
At least 4 full of xmas stuff.

I also noticed this in B and M. Was looking for the Halloween stuff the other day and they had a small half aisle of the stuff. Christmas? 4 aisles and then all the end displays on the other aisles had wreaths/ stockings/ advent calendars/ Christmas laundry detergent. Madness!

Yes and no from me on this one. My almost 4yo will be a witch, classic Halloween costume. But I felt it was a bit weird for my 4 month old so she has a strawberry costume 😅

Not weird at all

Never understood what it is about Halloween that people like. Horribly tacky, overly Americanised 'holiday' (as they'd doubtless call it).

So yes, put the decorations out tomorrow. In the bin, where they belong.

You mean the holiday that came from Irish and Scottish immigrants?

Ah yes, such an American thing. 🙄

There is a house about 15 minutes from me that has had Halloween decorations outside for at least a week! Looked a bit battered the other day after the storms last 2 weekends

This is a good idea. Our Halloween stuff is sort of divided between candles/punpkins/leaf garlands and then skeletons, bats and tomb stones. Could be a nice way to mark the difference.

We get progressively more autumnal from August, following the celtic seasons. I don't see the pumpkin/leaf/ conker type of stuff as Halloweeny even.

Oh but babies look so adorable in pumpkin suits!

It's up to you. But yes much too early for me.
I have only seen Halloween decorations in houses on actual Halloween not weeks before.

Well hold onto your hat because it looks like all that’s about to change! I predict that now it’s acceptable to start Halloween as soon as it’s October, that will now lead to a sort of pre-season in September and the decorations will start earlier and earlier. Personally I think celebrations are getting ruined by this approach.

12 weeks

I'd like to see people (and stores) wait until after 11th November - Remembrance Sunday - to go full-on Christmas. But my local garden centre had Christmas stuff out in August! Crazy, because they'd had to move some of their summer stuff to make room and had it hidden away round the back where people aren't going to see it.

HonestMumNotAlwaysRight · 02/10/2025 15:31

Mine are started as of yesterday - it’s Halloween month!! Enjoy it while it lasts - we have Halloween making activities most weekends and it’s just fun!

I love gradually 'layering' up my autumnal decorations, have had dried florals wreaths and bunches of grasses/twigs around for a couple of weeks, adding little touches - ribbons, felt garlands and bunting over the coming weeks and bringing in all the cute/ugly pumpkins. I love it all and now that I'm an oldie have plenty of time to do it all.
I can honestly say that when the little trick or treaters come knocking it's the most happiest and fun time of my year! I like to make tiny baskets or crackers to give out and am so looking forward to greeting all the little witches, creepies and monsters this year. Happy October Pump-kin-dred Spirits!

I agree. And don't get me started on hearing Wonderful Christmastime in October one year in a restaurant....!

I went to Venice one March and they were playing Christmas music (in English) in a restaurant. Oh well! I let them off 😄

Totally agree. I mean obviously people can do what they want, but I’m going to judge people who put their Christmas decorations up before Remembrance Day. These types are always going to win the argument on a logical level because they’ve got ‘does it really matter, what harm is it doing’ on their side and you end up sounding a bit of a bore objecting, but I’m too old to change my mind that they’re dicks.

AnneButNotHathaway · 08/10/2025 08:09

Do as you please, your place your rules! Spooky atmosphere rises up on the first day of October at my house and I've already posted a couple of smartshow 3d slideshows with skeletons, pumpkins and chilly music. Who cares if someone thinks it's too early, if you're in the mood of doing it, just go ahead.

Mine are up too! Autumnal and Halloween decorations. Alexa was just playing me some Halloween music and the movies are on Netflix. And as some poster pointed out, Halloween is not an American thing. It is originally Irish/Scottish.
