To put Halloween decorations up tomorrow?

Dd is finally of an age where she’s excited about Halloween. She’s very excited to decorate the house (I have some old decorations from a Halloween party I had a few years ago). AIBU to put them up with her tomorrow? Is it too early?

Then you need to get a life and learn some resilience if Halloween decorations in early October affect you so much.
You could just walk past and get on with your day.

Why are you so bothered about me being bothered about halloween decorations being up a month early?

The question was 'is it too early?' I say yes. Get off my back please.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 30/09/2025 22:10

We're doing our window decorating tomorrow, I got the box out earlier.
Have fun.

coxesorangepippin · 30/09/2025 22:12

Ours are already up

I'm past caring about Halloween protocol

The stupidity of it all affects me. Walking past halloween houses on October 1st is going to pee me off.
I don't want or need to get a grip thanks. I can think it's unreasonable if I like - this is AIBU.

I say Yes.

Do you not see the stupidity in you, who I am assuming has reached maturity, being unable to walk past someone’s house without getting the titty lip on?! It literally does not concern you at all!

If the op didn't think it was slightly unreasonable - why did they create this thread?

I think it's unreasonable, and so do the majority of voters if you look at the poll.

Hopefully she will decorate house anyway, and hopefully it will piss you off. Happy Halloween!

I speak from experience when I say that crawling babies are best dressed up as spiders - especially when the outfit has sticky out leg attachments and the crawl along the floor! Excellent entertainment!

OMG, that sounds hilarious and brilliant! 😆

And I hope the rest of this day is as pleasant as you are.

They've had the Halloween decorations up on August at theme parks in Orlando. At least you waited until October!

I'm very pleasant thanks so it will be a lovely evening. Blimey - how easily you get upset by someone saying they think it's unreasonable to put halloween decs up on 1st Oct 😆

Greenmouldycheese · 30/09/2025 22:23

Its your family, your traditions so if you want to decorate now, then go ahead. I've got autumnal decs up at the moment but will be decorating for Halloween next weekend. We do lots during the month of October and enjoy all the spooky fun. My kids love it.

Titty lip! 😆Never heard of that before. Just googled it. This is the first thing that came up. 😂

YANBU everybody does round here and so will we be

SabreIsMyFave · 30/09/2025 22:34

ticktickticktickBOOM · 30/09/2025 21:53

It's not. Xmas is 12 days from the 25th to the epiphany.

I don't know a single person who puts up their Christmas decorations/lights/tree up on 25th December.

Almost everyone I know puts them up between around 28th Nov and 12th December. As a pp said, I am baffled that you let what other people do affect you so much. Have you thought about trying to find out why?

PorridgeAndSyrup · 30/09/2025 22:34

SomeEsotericJoke · 30/09/2025 14:35

You'll ruin the fun of it! After the decorations have been up for a week you'll have stopped paying attention to them. Halloween does not need a month, nothing needs a month! Hold fire, pop them up a few days before and go full halloween for a shorter time. It'll be much more exciting.

Exactly this! I wish people realised this more. It's the same with Christmas. People call me a scrooge because I don't want to put my Christmas decorations up too early, but it's actually that I LOVE Christmas and don't want to ruin it by dragging it out so long that you get bored of it before it's even arrived. People are dragging every event out longer and longer, but it means they're becoming less and less special. Especially for kids, a month lasts forever, so the novelty will have worn off in a couple of weeks' time, and you'll still have two more weeks to go.

My house has ghosts, witches and skulls out all year! I have a book shelf in the front room with all sorts of dark stuff on as well as another in my office.

in the back garden I have a skeleton hung in a noose. A macabre scarecrow and headstones along with a couple of 6ft skeletons.

i have some bits that just go up a couple of weeks before Halloween

I love darker stuff.

it’s your home, if it’d make you and your little one happy do it!

Is the skeleton in a noose up all year?

Tropicana46 · 30/09/2025 22:37

I've had mine up for weeks lol

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/09/2025 22:41

ShodAndShadySenators · 30/09/2025 20:25

It has become a bigger thing in recent times, much bigger than Nov 5th.

I put a gang of skeletons out on garden chairs in our front garden. There are fake gravestones to make it look like a cemetery and orange and purple lights. There are cute dangly Halloween themed items hanging in the trees (felt mice dressed like mummies and witches, nothing horrendous). There's a speaker with themed music (not too loud!) The skeletons are having a party with beer and they look really happy. The visiting kids love it and pose in it to have their photos taken.

It's all very light hearted and focused on the trick or treaters enjoying themselves. It takes me most of the day to set it up and most of the next day to take it all down, but I don't mind because it beats actually trick or treating with my dc. I did many years traipsing the streets with my charges and this is my way of paying back.

I wouldn't personally put decorations up early but we can do what we like with our own homes. I actually passed a house nearly a fortnight ago that had Halloween stuff out and I thought it seemed early, but it's none of my business.

IMO it’s become so big at least partly because of all the merchandise, aka black and orange tat, in the shops. Guy Fawkes night doesn’t lend itself to tat, the only merchandise is fireworks.

Buxusmortus · 30/09/2025 22:43

Halloween has gone the way of every other day that can be used to make money for retailers by selling piles of tat. It's one bloody evening, wait till at least the last week of October before putting up decorations.

I also think that people should be more considerate of the type of decorations they use. There is a disgusting recent trend of having fake gravestones with skeletons partially coming out of them. Someone near me put that in their front garden a few days after my father was buried, not what you want to see in those circumstances. If people want that type of thing, or any skeleton or gore, or a skeleton with a noose as a pp said( what the actual fuck) then at least have the decency to put them in the back garden and keep the front for pumpkins, spiders and innocuous things which don't upset passers-by. You would imagine that families with little children wouldn't have the really horrible stuff but they do, god knows why, it's not funny.

evtheria · 30/09/2025 20:40

@PrimeTimeNowI love the (old fashioned) idea that the veil between worlds is thinnest, the stories of goblins and spirits etc being out, the fun of wearing disguises and costumes, the sweet treats, the extra opportunity to have a cosy bonfire or lantern, the adorable excitement of (most) children to be ‘out’ in the dark, plus it all ties in nicely with my general love of autumn and cooler weather. I also grew up with a parent who follows the traditions of ancestral spirits getting their day/night of coming back and enjoying food and drink, so I suppose something resonates there too, even if I’m not remotely religious.
But I’m not a fan of gore and chainsaws and serial-killer clowns etc, quite old and fusty in my tastes haha, and thus secretly judge others’ decorations accordingly 😂🧐

What a really beautiful and poetic explanation - thank you
