What’s given you the work ick?

I’ve started a new job recently and was surprised at how quickly I lost respect for certain colleagues. My manager regularly doesn’t show up for meetings she scheduled and just leaves you sitting there. Another colleague vapes through every meeting like it’s completely normal. It’s not the end of the world but it definitely gives me the ick and now I can’t take them seriously.

So AIBU to feel this way? And what are your workplace icks?

Not showing up for a meeting is rude rather than an ick, does she not message to say she’s running late?

PashaMinaMio · 29/09/2025 21:05

Hot-desking to a desk left absolutely filthy after the previous occupant had gone on leave.
Gunge and crisp leftovers between the keys, sticky cola rings on the desk top. Stains on the chair cushion. Finger marks all over the pc screen and chewed gum stuck to the desk underside.

Management had to have a few words with him.

Furgal · 29/09/2025 21:10

A manager who boasts, like he's 8 years old.

It is rude but it also gave me the ick because of how consistent and casual it is. There’s no message or heads-up, she just doesn’t show and we’re left waiting like lemons - both for team meetings and one on ones. I think what makes it an ick for me is how unbothered she seems, it’s like it’s totally normal for her to ghost her own team. That kind of disregard just puts me off.

Someone who wants to hire me for a start up to do literally all the work, simultaneously and painted a role for himself as essentially flying around and wasting money and time. Massive, massive ick.

Keystroke7 · 29/09/2025 21:37

People who don’t take ownership of their work/need to be chased or micromanaged, people who are rude to staff more junior than them, weak managers, nonsensical pettiness above value (e.g. telling people to come in when they’re contagious but could wfh), throwing weight around.

Peachandpassionfruit · 29/09/2025 21:38

The idea of bringing your whole self to work. Or a ‘work family’.

Urgh.

SeaAndStars · 29/09/2025 21:39

When you're new somewhere and the person showing you round keeps making in jokes with the people they're introducing you to e.g. "And this is Stokesy, he's a NIGHTMARE at the Christmas party but a dab hand getting in drinks after time's called AREN'T YOU STOKESY!!?? Legend!" (High five, roars with laughter).

Farticus101 · 29/09/2025 21:42

Colleagues bringing each other down to look good in front of management. I've never seen it happen on the whole except in my most current job. It's cringey and pathetic.

RunningJo · 29/09/2025 21:42

People who are so busy telling people how busy they are, that they don’t finish a task… or often don’t start them because you know, busy.

Elvisbaby321 · 29/09/2025 21:47

my manager doesn’t come to meetings just doesn’t show up he’s done it for the past 6 years we questioned him why he didn’t in our last meeting and he said he honestly didn’t think it was a big deal and laughed it off.

people who voluntarily gossip or throw colleagues under the bus to the manager I’m talking waiting till your on holiday then bringing every last little thing up

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/09/2025 21:55

People who eat during video calls. The man who was wearing a singlet and smoking during a work video call.

StillCreatingAName · 29/09/2025 21:58

Pretty much every single LinkedIn post from pretty much every single colleague. Extra ick if they’ve posted in the evening or in the morning before 8am.

Namechangerage · 29/09/2025 21:59

Timekeeping. Went on a work trip with 2 colleagues and it was bonkers! Booked a taxi for 6pm to take us to an event. Told them in advance, then at 5.45pm I text them to say I’m heading outside to get some sun while waiting. 6pm, I’m sat in the taxi raging, taxi driver angry as he has another job, I’m calling them and they say “oh didn’t see your text” and “I thought you were going to knock for us” Rock up at 6.10. Still get soooo angry about that 🤣

Virtue signalling pronoun sign offs on emails. I know you're She/Her Kerry - I was here when you announced you were pregnant love

Namechangerage · 29/09/2025 22:02

Also not reading emails! Mid twenties aged colleague - I sent them an email a week ago to ask for a task completed and added it to the calendar invite. Day of event - “have you done X”

“No I couldn’t find the link to X”

so bloody annoying! They’re not long out of uni (postgrad) and it feels like a very common thing with students these days (not reading emails) is it because they get too many? I somehow manage it at work though!

Walking around in bare feet

Cooking fish in the microwave

usedtobeaylis · 29/09/2025 22:08

Managers who gaslight. Absolute ick and changes my opinion of them.

I could just about handle it in email signatures, but our place does it in display names, so my inbox or any Teams meetings are just a sea of Her/She's, Him/His' and some go for the triple She/Her/Her's
I don't know how I'm still here to be honest.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 29/09/2025 22:18

Used to work in an office where we took turns to make the tea and coffee. When I make coffee, I put the water on the coffee and then add milk. A colleague said she didn't like her coffee made like that and asked if I could make hers by putting the milk in before the water. I said no problem and made it like that.

She kept making mine with the milk in before the water. I said I didn't like it and asked could she do water first in mine. She said no because that was the wrong way to make coffee and she refused to make coffee the wrong way.

I don't care if if's the wrong way, I like it made like that! I used to drink my manky coffee and silently seethe at her.

She obviously doesn’t respect the OP enough to inform her she will not be attending

Rach247 · 29/09/2025 22:21

Went to the dinner part of an internal conference event and all the support staff had been put on a separate table in the corner of the room, rather than sitting on the main tables with everyone else. So naff.

Total ick, intelligent managers don’t behave like this only insecure ones

FrangipaniBlue · 29/09/2025 22:23

Sending me a meeting invite without checking my diary and then when I decline because I already have a meeting in that slot replying with “can you send me details of your availability?”

No, I cannot. CHECK MY DIARY DIMWIT. (Or better yet, use the Outlook auto pick feature!)
