To think the vinted sizing system is shit?

I’m finally going through and listing the black bag of
clothes that don’t fit me anymore after a substantial weight loss.

But the issue is a lot of them are listed as an L or XL on the label, but they’re not a size 12 or 14! So I have to list them in the incorrect size, because otherwise sellers can dispute it if it’s wrong. I’m making it clear in the description it’s a letter size, not a number, but it’s a right pain!

I think you have to just try and be as accurate as you can be. So you’re doing the right thing by listing as the letter name if that’s what’s on the label. It’s on the buyer to check. Many, many brands are inconsistent with their number sizing so you’d certainly be under no obligation to take a return when you have listed as based on the label. Everyone will have their own judgement on whether a large is actually a 12 as different shops do it differently so there’s not much you can do!

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 29/09/2025 13:09

I've just listed some men's trousers for the first time, and the sizing even worse there - all it gives me are the ranges (L, XL type thing), so options for waist and length, which is surely the whole ethos of how most men's trousers are sold?

They are golf trousers, so they're in an 'active' category - I wonder if this expects them to be joggers? Will look at that, see if a different category might help.

Kumquatzest · 29/09/2025 13:19

It does seem weird to me that a 12 is considered "large" on Vinted when Primark's "small" pyjamas are labelled as fitting sizes 10-12. I guess it's because Vinted is a European (Latvian I think?) company so their system isn't based around British/Irish clothing sizes. I'd just put the label information in the description and buyers can make up their own minds about fit.

cramptramp · 29/09/2025 13:32

I always put the actual size in the title.

latetothefisting · 29/09/2025 13:48

Agree. Basically they just need to pick ONE size category (ideally 8,10, 12 etc as the most commonly used in uk) and then have an FAQ for what to do with items that aren't in that sizing pattern - i.e US/Eur sizes, SML etc.

Rather than trying to amalgamate the two

Worriedalltheday · 29/09/2025 13:49

I’ll never buy on there. You can’t return if there’s a problem.

mymumwouldntapprove · 29/09/2025 13:51

Yes I hate it too.
I am also irritated by the fact I can’t filter out tall sizes and leg lengths.
I would want size 14 trousers with a 34-35” inside leg, or Tall range tops, and there’s no way to search for that. It puts me off looking on there.

DaveWatts · 29/09/2025 13:52

I just put 'fits a UK 16-18' (or whatever) in the description.

Onionringo · 29/09/2025 14:37

I always take a photo of the label and put that on. And I never buy anything that doesn't have a photo of the label that states the size.

RobinEllacotStrike · 29/09/2025 14:43

also sellers aren't helping - I often see garments listed as L and then the seller includes a picture of the label that says the size is XL.

I get that the seller might feel like it sizes up or down but its not helpful to go so off piste - those details can be included in the description where it is useful information,

While I am moaning, sInce when is a size 41 shoe a 9 in the UK?

Clothing sizes are fraught enough on their own without sellers reinventing sizes themselves.

89DaysToLoseIt · 27/09/2025 19:42

I feel like this works if you’ve got the time and/or aren’t selling a lot. I’m selling probably 30+ times due to weight loss, some of them are 4-5 years old, i don’t have the time to find measurements for every single one

I won’t buy anything that doesn’t have measurements listed, as every make is so different. I won’t ask anymore for measurements, as too many sellers can’t be bothered, and it is tedious the amount of sellers like you who want to offload, but are too lazy to give enough information.

Candlesburn · 29/09/2025 15:44

I have an old Topshop coat that I searched on Vinted to see if there were any similar ones listed to see if it was worth listing . As it is I assume vintage ( twenty years plus ) the sizing listed is different to the label . For example a label is clearly shown as 14 , but listed as a twelve . I appreciate that sizing has changed over the years but it is very confusing ….

Judecb · 29/09/2025 18:14

Vinted sizes are crazy! 14 = XL !

This. Simply this. No label, no sale as far as I am concerned.

The thing that boils my piss is people listing eg a sweater as size 10 with the description stating that it was originally a size 18 but they 'shrunk it in the wash'.

Just put the bloody wrecked thing in the bin!

FizzPlease · 29/09/2025 21:02

I don't buy on Vinted for this very reason and there are often no descriptions written in the section. Some things don't list a size at all - and folk wonder why they are not selling! I was looking for a swimsuit new with tags, and sellers were picturing the tags that were unreadable, with no reference to the size in the description. So frustrating.

At least on e-bay you get a bit of blurb, so I am inclined to buy more from e-bay.

I have, however, sold a shit tonne of stuff on Vinted and I always take the time to put a long description, say whether it is more like a UK16 (if it is labelled as something else) and, more recently, making sure I take measurements, which is a PITA, but felt I had to do it as I was being inundated with requests for measurements, so just do it at the listing stage now. Takes an age, but worth it for the £'s that are coming in.

I also hate the restricted categories, etc for Vinted. It needs a lot of tweaking for the UK market I feel.

mamagogo1 · 29/09/2025 21:10

I’ve bought closed listed 16 that were U.K. sized. You need to convert from us sizing so a U.K. 16-18 is XL 14 is L 12 is medium.

Worriedalltheday · 29/09/2025 13:49

I’ll never buy on there. You can’t return if there’s a problem.

Even if you click the "there's a problem" button instead of "everything's good"? I've not had to ever do that so I don't know what happens next but I'd imagine if it's wildly off from the description or something there would be a return/refund option available.

Newmeagain · 30/09/2025 00:43

No system is going to be perfect and I only use it as a guide. I always check the actual label on the item.

BooneyBeautiful · 30/09/2025 01:51

89DaysToLoseIt · 27/09/2025 19:00

I just add a picture of the label and say “brand size X per the label”. It’s on the buyer then.

it’s just really frustrating because size 12 people will be seeing my 16-18 clothes!

In these circumstances, I would list as per the garment, so if it's a size 14 list as XL, if a 16 list as XXL etc. I was searching for a size 12 dressing gown the other day and kept messaging sellers who had listed them as an L/12 when the garment was actually a size 16! The whole thing was just wasting time trawling through items that would have been too big!

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 30/09/2025 02:14

List according to garment label. When I search on vinted, I search for individual brands in the sizes that I already know fit me in those stores.

MagentaRocks · 30/09/2025 03:23

Ive bought a lot from vinted. I just go by the clothes size and ignore the L/XL bit. Not had a problem. I filter to the size i want. I do think in Europe the sizes are XL for a 14 for example

80smonster · 30/09/2025 04:49

Super annoying, especially as vintage clothes are usually smaller. So a vintage 14 will be 10-12. Makes buying tricky. I’m currently eyeing a gorgeous leather jacket, knowing that it’s too small despite whatever label it has.

This is my point though.

I have a lot of H&M XL stuff to sell. That fit me at a size 18/20. But it’s labelled as XL, so I need to sell it as an XL.

No you don't! You simply use the Vinted sizing, but photograph the label for clarity. It's incredibly annoying for people like me who are looking for an item of a certain size and keep coming across items that would be way too big! I would be absolutely furious if I bought something that was listed as an L when, in fact, it was an XXL. I don't want the hassle of having to keep looking at the label sizes because a seller hasn't listed it as per Vinted sizing.

Corfcorf · 30/09/2025 11:04

YES! I often to use Vinted to buy a brand where M = size 12 and L = size 14. Ironically I started using Vinted because the brand's own website was difficult to search.

I spend a long time scouring listing for pictures of labels and sizing information, and cursing the sellers when they haven't posted one!
