Just sat opposite a young couple, guess about 17. The girl was wearing a jumper and those horrible flesh coloured bum scrunch leggings (when she got up I noticed she had a black thong underneath)

Both of them were holding their phones. She had no bag and obviously no pockets in the leggings.

Would you really walk around all day with your phone in your hand? I couldn't leave the house without a bag at that age. I had to have perfume, lippy, brush, tissues, Tampax, purse, hair clip and a copy of Mizz or More.

How do you cope without all that nowadays?!

I remember at 16 asking my friend to hold my bag so I could snog a boy called Chris at the bus stop.

The only stuff I tend to have is my house key and phone, so if I can’t put it in a pocket I just carry it or put the phone up the sleeve of my jumper or hoodie, I don’t own any handbags if I have heaps of stuff (rare) I’d just use a backpack.

Handeyethingyowl · 27/09/2025 12:25

No idea. I take out at minimum: keys, phone, small wallet (needed less since apple pay, sometimes don’t bother then find I need my national trust card), make up touch up, emergency sanitary stuff, antihistamines after having a random reaction once, tissues, sunglasses, beanie
or sun hat, inhalers, a pen. If I don’t take a bottle of water I get a tickly cough within ten minutes of leaving. Emergency biscuit for low blood sugar.

Handeyethingyowl · 27/09/2025 12:27

I probably didn't carry a handbag as a teen though. We didn’t have phones though. Or any money usually for that matter.

NoisyLittleOtter · 27/09/2025 12:28

I doubt there are many 17 year olds who wear scrunched up bum leggings on here to answer you OP!

SGBK4862 · 27/09/2025 12:30

I often just take my phone and door key but never without pockets to put them in - or a small bag. But young people are used to constantly holding a phone. My 20 yo can't bring things down from her bedroom that need two hands to carry......! Plus boyfriends are useful for carrying things.

Elsvieta · 27/09/2025 12:31

I can't comprehend anyone who leaves the house without a book (I mean, what if you get stuck somewhere with nothing to do?) and an umbrella.

I have the Kindle app on my phone for this reason.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/09/2025 12:34

Back when I was young, I loaded up my denim jacket pockets with my stuff. I didn't have a handbag til my 20s. No mobile phones in those ancient times though!

ThatWildMintSloth · 27/09/2025 12:39

Maybe she just nipped out and so didnt need anything other than her phone. Or maybe she's just hanging about. Travel ticket, money can be on her phone.

I certainly didnt take anything with me if I was just 'playing out' as a teenager. I'd just go back home if I needed anything.

However, nowadays is another story... I even have emergency paracetamol and antihistamines in my bag😂

Same. I've got the Kindle app on my phone but I much prefer an actual book😁

KawasakiBabe · 27/09/2025 12:43

I rarely ever carried a bag until I had a baby at 34, just money, lippy and a key in a pocket. Ah, those lovely carefree days!

Squishydishy · 27/09/2025 12:47

Tbh I think carrying a hand bag is a bit of an older person thing. My mum in her 60s lugs a huge bag with tissues, lipstick, umbrella, water bottle etc etc. it’s so heavy! And it’s clearly hurting her one shoulder which she denies.

i leave the house with just my phone sometimes, usually in a coat pocket. My phone is my money. Also have books on my phone.

my door key is in a key box at our house.

I think the young girl probably stores her phone in her bra, I’ve seen lots of people do that if they don’t have pockets.

-anyway big hand bags are aging IMO

warmapplepies · 27/09/2025 12:47

I only carry keys and my phone, both of which fit in my pocket. I don't need anything else.

Books are on my phone.
Jacket with a hood if it might rain.

DD is 21, ID & debit card (in case of Apple Pay/phone fail) is in the back of her phone case, and key is in her jeans pocket and that’s it most days! The only bag she’ll ever take if she’s out all day or staying over at a friends house is a canvas tote. Even when she goes on short holidays she can get everything into a normal size backpack that fits under the plane seat - no idea how she does it, drives me mad!

DoAWheelie · 27/09/2025 12:53

I have very limited choice of trousers due to extreme water retention that makes my left leg/foot twice the size of my right one. The one pair I have that are comfortable without constantly falling down don't have any pockets.

I keep my phone and my bank card tucked into my bra and don't really carry anything else. It's worked fine for years. Keys are clipped to a belt loop.

Most of the crap people carry around with them isn't needed bar medications maybe. I used to lug around a backpack full of stuff as I hated tradition handbags but I forgot it on a day trip once and realised I didn't actually want anything from it all day and just stopped nothing with what wouldn't fit in a pocket after that. And then lost my pockets.

People stick their phones in their bra? Don't your boobs look weird?

I don’t need any of that stuff you detailed in the op. Wouldn’t even put it on at home, let alone think it’s important enough to carry around. Don’t have an umbrella. Keys we have a safe thing outside our house. Wallet in my phone. All I need is a phone.

tobee · 27/09/2025 13:42

It's always a boy called Chris.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 27/09/2025 13:47

I only ever really carried a lip balm and my wallet back in the day. As a teenager we didn't have phones (I was 6th form by the time I had my first). I would be wearing jeans normally and have those things in my pocket.

Nowadays I still travel light if just me...car key, phone and lip balm, hairband on my wrist. I rarely need anything else, if I do I have an emergency kit in my car. (Has tissues, various medications, lip balm, charger, gum etc.) Car key has a hook on so I can clip it to my belt loop while in my pocket cause I am paranoid about dropping it.

If out with the kids I take more obviously, said 'emergency pouch' (not the one that lives in the car), bottle of water, a cereal bar, little pouch with a change of pants and some wipes for the youngest.

VoltaireMittyDream · 27/09/2025 13:58

When I was young I had a tiny bag with my phone and wallet and keys.

I’d love to go back to that level of stufflessness, but encroaching decrepitude means I now also need to make sure I have my migraine tablets and absolute fucking gallons of water with me at all times.

And SEN parenting means whenever I manage to persuade DS to actually leave the house, I also need to bring ear defenders & power banks and multiple chargers so the Switch and iPad don’t run out of battery leading to apocalyptic meltdowns.

MagicLoop · 27/09/2025 14:01

YANBU. I always have a bag!

I am fascinated by this. I have very small boobs and am always amazed at the things larger chested women can do and wear that I can’t.

I had a neighbour who used to keep her phone tucked between her boobs. It was like having an extra pocket. You couldn’t see the phone at all, and then she’s just have a rummage in her cleavage and produce it. I always wondered if it was uncomfortable when it rang, or whether it got too hot against her skin.

Dawnalley · 27/09/2025 14:21

Whenever I've put my phone in my bra it gets all sweaty and makes my screen/camera lens blurry. If you carry your phone in your hand around here (London), it'll get snatched. Some leggings do have pockets though. I generally only wear jeans or trousers with a pocket so I have somewhere to put my phone. But I like to have a small bag with a proper wallet. I can't put everything on my phone, for one thing I use DH's debit card so I need to carry that separately, plus a lot of other cards which can't be put on a phone like Freedom Pass for free travel, Access cards for free carer entry and Ride Access cards for queue skipping. I usually have several sets of keys as I have 2 properties plus Radar key. But a typical 17yo won't have a need for all that.
