Just sat opposite a young couple, guess about 17. The girl was wearing a jumper and those horrible flesh coloured bum scrunch leggings (when she got up I noticed she had a black thong underneath)

Both of them were holding their phones. She had no bag and obviously no pockets in the leggings.

Would you really walk around all day with your phone in your hand? I couldn't leave the house without a bag at that age. I had to have perfume, lippy, brush, tissues, Tampax, purse, hair clip and a copy of Mizz or More.

How do you cope without all that nowadays?!

I remember at 16 asking my friend to hold my bag so I could snog a boy called Chris at the bus stop.

To all the people who just take a phone, no cards or cash-do you have phones with ultra long battery lives? DD never caries cash/cards went to London for a show. Coming back her phone battery died and she fell asleep on the train. So-no money, ticket on phone. She ended up in a little station, had to borrow a phone to ring me, necessitating a cross country trip in the small hours.
The falling asleep is on her but the rest was a lesson. Take a lead or power pack for your phone.

I've never had my phone die on me ever. I don't think it has an especially long battery life, but it will easily last 24 hours if needed.

I’ve been known to tuck my phone in my bra as well.

Realistically though I have my bank cards and house key on my phone, a hair band round my wrist or in my hair, predictable periods and enough apps on my phone to be able to not need a magazine if I’m bored.

Edited to add that I don’t wear those leggings though.

Battery in my phone dies really quickly if used on a train etc. it is quite old though. It was just a word of warning. DDs phone is only 2-3 yrs old.

FuzzyWolf · 27/09/2025 15:05

Quite a few places here charge the newer phones by contact. So you can pop your phone on the charger on a table and it charges without the need for a lead or worrying about the battery dying.

God I miss Mizz and More

Yes, seen those but our local trains haven’t got then or sockets either.

I would have thought most people kept an eye on their battery and adapted their phone use accordingly? I dunno, I use my phone all day at work for sat nav, taking photos, listening to music etc. and have never had any worries about battery life.

No idea. I take out at minimum: keys, phone, small wallet (needed less since apple pay, sometimes don’t bother then find I need my national trust card), make up touch up, emergency sanitary stuff, antihistamines after having a random reaction once, tissues, sunglasses, beanie
or sun hat, inhalers, a pen. If I don’t take a bottle of water I get a tickly cough within ten minutes of leaving. Emergency biscuit for low blood sugar.

Pssst! You can put your national trust card in your phone wallet to save yourself with that!

I was thinking the other day about how l won’t buy a coat without a hood anymore.

But at one point l did. Then l realised it was because l always had an umbrella in a bag.

Now l just take out phone, keys and lip balm. It’s liberating.

DD is 21, ID & debit card (in case of Apple Pay/phone fail) is in the back of her phone case, and key is in her jeans pocket and that’s it most days! The only bag she’ll ever take if she’s out all day or staying over at a friends house is a canvas tote. Even when she goes on short holidays she can get everything into a normal size backpack that fits under the plane seat - no idea how she does it, drives me mad!

My 18 yr old DD is similar. Her “handbag” is her bag for college with her tablet in and her dinner and her coursework etc . If she goes out her phone is her bank card . She puts her car keys in her pocket and everything else is in the car . I rarely see her with an actual handbag unless she’s going clubbing and then it’s tiny .
We were in river island recently and she loved a bag but she only wanted it for clubbing and then she walked away coz she said she would probably put it down and lose it . Youngsters today have everything they need on their phones .

Princesspollyyy · 27/09/2025 18:53

Sometimes I leave the house with just my phone, i dont need a purse as I use Apple Pay.

Fridgetapas · 27/09/2025 19:15

Lots of leggings have an in built pocket for your phone now. Most of mine do.
I wouldn’t normally use a bag for going out and about unless going out for the whole day.
If just going out for a few hours I’d have phone in pocket with everything I need on there - cards, kindle. Keys fit in pocket too. I wouldn’t take a perfume or a lippy. Maybe a bobble on my wrist. Hair clip clips on outfit.
One thing I do normally go out with is a water bottle and that usually gets left in the car.

I can only speak on behalf of Android, but it lets you take a picture of ANY card / ticket and converts it into a digital one.
Ultimately all NT needs is the QR code, so as long as it's there I think you're all good.
