Hi Lizziemum,

I get my veg box and meat box from Riverford Organic. I have tried others such as Abel and Cole, but they are just not as good, and I find that at the end of the week all the veg is beginning to go off quite a lot. Riverford keeps much better.

For me, cost is not such an issue than for those on a budget, but I was surprised to notice how my bills went down, and I am happier with buying local food that is organic.

I think that buying more local produce is one way to beat the financial pinch - it's bad enough that food is getting more expensive to produce (apparently) without having to contribute to increasing oil prices due to having your apples air freighted from Argentine...FFS! Talk about taking coals to Newcastle .

Thank goodness for Callisto and Cestlavie for pointing out that - actually - people are facing starvation and/or food riots in many parts of the world because of the rising price of food. And people in Blighty are complaining because we might have to cut back on shrink-wrapped peppers and tinned rice pudding.

So depressing to see how many people have - literally - bought into the "I consume, therefore I am" culture.

the other interesting thing is the profit the supermarkets make in proportion to the profit the growers make it is still vastly in favour of the shops (m&s announced millions profit other week)
and its getting expensive to transport too cause we import it all well just about

i shop every couple of days, and do the fish thing too
and use markets, small traders etc

firepile i agree and riven too

but dont grudge desi her rice'n'can even though it looks/texture of like vom to me

As an example orange juice concentrate went up in price by nearly 100% the years before last. My company, who use it in their products, were unable to pass on the full cost to their customers because the supermarkets wouldn't wear it. Recently they have managed to get a slightly higher price. Supermarkets, who are the source of most UK peoples' food, are going to start charging more because raw materials cost more - for a variety of reasons. But they (and the suppliers) have been cushioning the customer for a while now.
