Me and DH did a Morrisons big shop on Friday. We purposely took great care to buy vital stuff only and stuff on offer. No booze, no biscuits or crisps are anything 'fun'. Own brand cleaning stuff too.

Came to £74. We just looked at each other in despair and then down at the trolley with its thin layer of nothing much in bags.

It is outrageously expensive at the moment! I now have to keep looking around for specials! Makes me so

Pinions · 03/06/2008 12:53

hana , I agree with you about the French set of priorities; also agree with op about how much everthing has gone up.
What gets me is how expensive fruit and veg is- red pepper, 80/90 pence each, sweet small tomatoes that the kids eat in a sitting ,2.00, etc etc. The only cheapish fruit is apples. And yet you can get a crummy chicken for a few quid, or a pizza. No wonder people feel reduced to buying what's considered crap, the good stuf costs so much.
Do you think we've got used to very cheap food? I mean, shoes for instance are really expensive, and we tend to buy a couple of pairs a year for the kids, yet complain when a chicken costs more than a fiver. Where as , as hana says, the French think money on good food is money well spent.

whinegums · 03/06/2008 12:58

I wouldn't mind spending a higher % of income on food 'like the French' if the food was the same quality as it is in French supermarkets! There is far too much poor quality food around, if you want decent stuff, you pay through the nose.

Callisto · 03/06/2008 12:59

Why does it make you so angry? The cost of food has been outrageously low in this country for ages and farmers have been going out of business at a terrrifying rate. Perhaps higher food prices will make people respect and value the farmers who have been working for nothing for the last decade, and perhaps throw less food away?

electricbarbarella · 03/06/2008 13:00

I only ever buy treats if they are on offer. Our multi save is usually half of the shopping amount but has still gone up so much.

Pinions · 03/06/2008 13:02

Callisto - why does it make me so angry. Sorry for being so selfish.

Maybe if the supermarkets spent less on singling out the perfectly-shaped, uniform looking veg/fruit, they could reduce the price? It makes me so ! I would be more than pleased to buy a wonky pepper.

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 13:03

can you buy fruit and veg at a market?

today I got 5 fresh figs for £1
raspberries for £1 (lots of them)
About 50 big cherry tomatoes for £1

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 13:04

What do you mean by "quality food"?

perfect shapes and no mud? They don't affect the taste

Can you grow some of your own

PinkPussyCat · 03/06/2008 13:04

Market here is only once a fortnight, I do make use of it when it's on.

CountessDracula · 03/06/2008 13:05

Also if you shop on a sat night you can get lots of marked down things to freeze I have noticed

DaisySteiner · 03/06/2008 13:05

You can buy wonky peppers! They're the value ones, or buy frozen peppers for a fraction of the price.

I agree food prices have gone up, but there are more special offers and I'm still managing to feed a family of 6 on good quality, tasty food for £65 a week. Have just started an allotment in anticipation of higher prices in future

PinkPussyCat · 03/06/2008 13:06

Lol CD, dh has attempted this year after year but due to us both doing shifts etc just can't spend the time 'pottering'. And we have had numerous crop failures!

(I can't even grow buddlea)

morningpaper · 03/06/2008 13:07

Agree, food has been too cheap - I'm afraid we will need to become re-accustomed to spending money on FOOD instead of luxuries like holidays

Don't understand the anger response either

Most households throw away 1/3 food uneaten, we need to learn to make better use of our food

booge · 03/06/2008 13:09

Agree mp, we've been spoilt in so many ways for the last 20 years but of course changing habits is hard.

Does anyone shop at Lidl or am I the only skinflint? Their bread and veg is cheap (e.g. 29p for a cucumber) and it's generally good quality.

northernrefugee39 · 03/06/2008 13:12

Our market (once a week) abandoned it's fruit and veg stall about 3 yrs ago.
We grow our own veg, so are quite lucky. haven't tried peppers yet.
I agree about the supermarkets not taking wonky veg too.
We are spoilt, cheap food, and ready meals and stuff. If we all had time I s'pose we'd become more creative with what we can afford; I resent hours of time spent cooking though....

PinkPussyCat · 03/06/2008 13:12

Yep I try + get to Lidl + Aldi more often these days. Tesco's 99p red peppers are the limit!

Rowlers · 03/06/2008 13:16

Get used to it because it's not going to change any time soon
