Is this an ok gift? Or weird?

Hi, need a bit of honest perspective here!

my dog had TPLO surgery which has been a really difficult few months of recovery. She’s back to normal now and the surgery was a complete success and I can’t tell you how much of a relief it is to see her happily running about as normal again!

her vet (who’s been in charge of her care and actually carried out the op) was seriously amazing- I understand it’s her job to care about animals but I really felt she went above and beyond to look after my dog and showed so much care.

I was going to hand in chocolates for all the receptionists/nurses/admin people who helped, but also some chocolates and thank you card specifically for the vet. I was thinking of including a photo of my dog on her first walk after being fully recovered but would that be a bit odd? I’ve got a cute picture of her from her first trip back to the seaside after being recovered and she looks so, so happy in it- I was going to print a copy and put it in the thank you for card for the vet but just not sure if thats weird or a nice idea?

just very grateful for the help but also don’t want to come across a bit weird or strange haha, I’m aware the vet isn’t my friend and it’s her job to help animals but she was so kind to us and did an incredible dog helping my dogs leg

I think it’s a lovely idea!

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 26/09/2025 09:32

I think it’s a nice idea 😊.

stichguru · 26/09/2025 09:35

Presuming you mean a little photo slipped inside a card, not an A4 monstrosity in an equally monstrous expensive gift frame, not weird at all!

QueenJulian · 26/09/2025 09:36

You could use the photo of your dog to make the card using a company like moonpig if they are still around. I think you upload the photo on the site and chose a thank you message for the front. If will be personalised but not over the top .

LactoseTolerant · 26/09/2025 09:37

The vet that I used to go had lots of photos of pets and cards hung on their wall. I think it's a lovely idea (but yes don't frame)

Onleemoi · 26/09/2025 09:37

Our vets have a pinboard full of thank you cards and photos so I don’t think it’s odd at all.

How can a dog look happy? Confused

Oh there’s always one 🙄

In the picture she’s covered in water and sand because she’s been in the sea and rolling about, she’s got her tennis ball beside her which is obviously half chewed because she’s been playing fetch with it and she’s got a bright look on her face- she looks happy. And considering when she first saw her before her op she was whimpering, couldn’t walk on her leg, was utterly miserable and was visibly distressed, she’s definitely visibly much happier in the photo. Does that clarify it for you?

Thanks everyone, haha definitely no frames or big photos, I was just thinking a small Polaroid size picture in the card 😊

I'm a vet and I love to receive these things! It's so nice to be told you've made a real difference. A photo of your pet back to enjoying life and a handwritten note explaining what they're now able to do will brighten up your vet's day, I'm sure 😊

Tigerthatcametobrunch · 26/09/2025 09:51

Lovely idea.

FrondsofFriday · 26/09/2025 09:55

I’ve never been in a vets surgery that didn’t have a wall full of precisely these sorts of photos so I think it’s absolutely fine!

Gall10 · 26/09/2025 09:57

The vet will love it! I worked for a while in a vasectomy reversal unit ….best gift we ever got was seeing the new babies & deliriously happy parents!
Beat that doggie walkers!

Tastaturen · 26/09/2025 10:01

Another vote for making the dog photo into the 'thank you' card.
Also another vote for doings definitely being able to look happy!
Glad doggo is on the mend. :)

Oreosareawful · 26/09/2025 10:04

Nothing weird about this! But YABU not to show us the picture 😁

Bumcake · 26/09/2025 10:04

I think it’s very thoughtful of you. Glad to hear your dog is doing so well.

CatBooksWineInThatOrder · 26/09/2025 10:06

I gave a thank you card and box of chocolates to the vet who put my cat to sleep! She was so lovely and helped me make a really hard decision. I think what you’re suggesting is lovely. But please post the doggo pic!

hididdlyho · 26/09/2025 10:08

I think that's a nice gesture, our vets always has Thankyou cards displayed in the waiting room, so I don't think it's odd to include a photo of your dog as well. I think where vets see animals for extended treatment they do build a bit of a bond with them. When our dog died, the vet (not the owner of the practice) who had been treating him weekly for the last year of his life sent a plant and a condolences card with a lovely message.

soft eyes, open mouth, loose body. Have you ever met a dog?

I feel like I may have fallen into a cunning trap to get lots of happy dog photos!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 26/09/2025 10:28

I think that would be really kind. A lot of vets suffer with the stress of the job.

spiderlight · 26/09/2025 10:29

Do it!! That would absolutely make the vet's day. I'm glad your dog is so happy again :)

Shirleysurely · 26/09/2025 10:37

Another vet here. It's definitely not a weird thing to do and will be very much appreciated. It means a lot to us to hear we've made a difference.

As an aside be careful with tennis balls and sand. The fur on them collects it and can act as sandpaper on the teeth causing dental damage/wear. Smooth balls are safer.

Yes ours too
I can't read some of the messages because they make me cry but it is lovely to see so many cArds ,
I agree with using the photo for the card (either handmade or bought) so it can't get lost

HelloCheekyCat · 26/09/2025 10:40

Dogs can definitely look happy, cats on the other hand always look miserable (or may just be mine!)
