Hi, need a bit of honest perspective here!

my dog had TPLO surgery which has been a really difficult few months of recovery. She’s back to normal now and the surgery was a complete success and I can’t tell you how much of a relief it is to see her happily running about as normal again!

her vet (who’s been in charge of her care and actually carried out the op) was seriously amazing- I understand it’s her job to care about animals but I really felt she went above and beyond to look after my dog and showed so much care.

I was going to hand in chocolates for all the receptionists/nurses/admin people who helped, but also some chocolates and thank you card specifically for the vet. I was thinking of including a photo of my dog on her first walk after being fully recovered but would that be a bit odd? I’ve got a cute picture of her from her first trip back to the seaside after being recovered and she looks so, so happy in it- I was going to print a copy and put it in the thank you for card for the vet but just not sure if thats weird or a nice idea?

just very grateful for the help but also don’t want to come across a bit weird or strange haha, I’m aware the vet isn’t my friend and it’s her job to help animals but she was so kind to us and did an incredible dog helping my dogs leg

Do it. It's a lovely thing to do.

meganorks · 26/09/2025 11:10

I think it's a lovely, kind idea. She'll love it. Obviously, as a vet, there are sometimes less happy outcomes. So knowing how appreciated she is and how she has changed the dogs life will mean the world. Of course she'll want to see the pic of the dog! Picture of you- that might be weird 😂

DinoLil · 26/09/2025 11:14

I did exactly the same thing! My dog was literally two hours from being to put to sleep but the vet managed to bring her round. I took in biscuits and chocolates and made a card with a photo of my dog. Six months on, the card is still on the wall in the vets and the vet remembers her whenever we go and collect flea treatment or she has a check up.

How can a dog look happy? Confused

Of course animals can look happy, sad, scared, anxious just as humans can. To be honest if you aren't aware of this you must walk around with your eyes closed. You see happy dogs out walks, on the beach all the time.

BernadetteJune · 26/09/2025 11:27

Lovely idea - both the chocolates and the photo. Very thoughtful of you.

Pancakeflipper · 26/09/2025 11:34

Do it.
The staff will appreciate it. And a photo card of a happy dog they've helped is a happy bonus.

I can tell when our animals are happy or sad. Body language is strong in animals.

The vet will love it! I worked for a while in a vasectomy reversal unit ….best gift we ever got was seeing the new babies & deliriously happy parents!
Beat that doggie walkers!

My eyes (initially!) nearly popped out of my head imagining your photos - until I saw “babies” mentioned! Sorry, that’s bad of me.

You could use the photo of your dog to make the card using a company like moonpig if they are still around. I think you upload the photo on the site and chose a thank you message for the front. If will be personalised but not over the top .

This was gonna be my suggestion. Then she can choose to put it up if she wants to ask a pic, or stash it with the other thank you cards etc and it might make it feel less like "he's a picture of my dog to frame". But I think it's a lovely idea op

TheGreatWesternShrew · 26/09/2025 11:39

I think they’d love it. Vets love animals…

So pleased it was not just me 😂😂

LaughingCat · 26/09/2025 11:43

Definitely another yes here! Not weird at all - definitely a boost for the vet and a lovely gesture after they’ve given your dog so much care.

@AppleAndCinnamonPie Cant believe you’ve left us hanging like this! 😮📸

How can a dog look happy? Confused

Dogs are one of the most expressive animals on the planet, and as a species we've spent 10's of thousands of years in close proximity to them. Most humans can tell on sight whether a dog is happy or not.

Cats on the other hand, are inscrutable little bastards.

Winky2024 · 26/09/2025 12:02

Of course dogs can look happy!

Is this an ok gift? Or weird?
ClaredeBear · 26/09/2025 12:03

The moonpig card is a great idea. (Alongside the chocolates!).

Onelifeonly · 26/09/2025 12:05

Not weird. Our vets display thank you cards and photos of recovered pets. Good publicity, apart from the fact we all like to be appreciated!

I agree with this.
I sent a thank you card to my therapist after we'd finished and did it with Moonpig, using a photo of this really nice place in the lake District which I'd used as my 'calm place' throughout therapy so it felt a bit more meaningful than a generic thank you card but not like I'm expecting him to make it the centrepiece of his living room

pic of my pet laughing, looking happy?

MatildaTheCat · 26/09/2025 12:20

Of course send a card and photo. I did the same for the very very kind vet who put our old dog to sleep. She just made a terrible event a bit more bearable.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 26/09/2025 12:35

In my vet, there is a whole wall in reception covered in photos of people pets that they have treated!
It really is lovely.

Silverbirchleaf · 26/09/2025 12:38

Lovely idea, and small photo in card is fine.

Catpiece · 26/09/2025 12:38

After the lovely vet rebuilt my cat’s leg (torn cruciate ligament) she was delighted to see photos of him up on top of the shed again. It was touch and go that the leg would have to be amputated but she managed to save it. I gave her a thank you card signed from the cat. He’s still going strong thanks to her x

How can a dog look happy? Confused

Take a look at some photos from animal charities of poor, abused animals. Then take a look around your neighbourhood at the ones that are loved and cared for. Maybe that will help you spot the difference.
