To ask where do mums find the time?!

I'm going on a girls holiday with my friends. It's the first time we have done this since our twenties and now we are all turning 40. In prep for the holiday because all my friends are babes I've been getting my nails, waxing, highlights etc done (which is not something i ever do anymore as i work full time and have kids) but it amazes me how some mums manage to stay so put together getting their roots/nails done every 6 weeks. I was 3 and half hours getting my highlights done yday plus another 2 hours getting my nails done today, I can handle the cost but where on earth are you getting the time!!!!

OP posts:
Springadorable · 23/09/2025 18:45

None of my mum friends get their hair or nails done. Zero time. Or inclination.

casualcrispenjoyer · 23/09/2025 18:46

My husband looks after them whilst I go to the salon?

I make appointments at weekends, stick it in the calendar and then announce I am going?

Mydadsbirthday · 23/09/2025 18:47

I simply don't have time for this - I get a blow dry every couple of weeks by a hairdresser that does it in 20 minutes flat a few minutes walk from my house and I get my eyebrows done every month or so. I work full time in a senior role and this keeps me looking fairly groomed. I never get my nails done but one of my colleagues has someone come to her house to do her nails.

Crushed23 · 23/09/2025 18:48

I presume the children’s second parent looks after the children while they’re getting their hair and nails done.

Outlookqueen · 23/09/2025 18:51

My husband parents his daughter whilst I get my hair done/ eyebrows done etc. If he’s working or not around for whatever reason, I’ll see if my mum can watch her for a couple of hours or whatever.

This would be a lot harder with multiple kids/ as a single parent obviously.

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 23/09/2025 18:53

I don't get either highlights or nails done - but if I did, work, not the kids, would be the main barrier/thing I'd have to schedule around. I'd have to do it at the weekend, so I'd just leave the kids with DH, just like I do if I want to go out at the weekend for any other reason.

padso · 23/09/2025 18:53

People just prioritise differently. I see family & friends a lot & work (p/t) plus dd are still young so I don't have time to for weekly beauty treatments. My highlights & balayage takes hours, I only do it every 4 months as it's a whole Saturday gone.

padso · 23/09/2025 18:55

I do eyebrows monthly on my day off. Facial maybe every 3 months. Nails do myself & keep pedicures to the summer.

TinyTempest · 23/09/2025 18:55

Presumably they find time on their days off or in the evenings when their partners are home?

MumChp · 23/09/2025 18:56

I have the time if it was important to me to go to the hairdresser or get nails done.
Tomorrow afternoon I spend 4 hours being a girl guide leader. My choice.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 23/09/2025 19:00

My nail tech is in my hairdressers it's really useful. My nails are done while my hair is taking.

Agree. Neither me or anyone I know finds the fake hair / nails look at all attractive / aspirational. There’s more to life OP.

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/09/2025 19:06

People have different schedules/budgets/priorities. Some people don’t have the money, some do. Some people dont particularly care about that, others put a great deal of stress on it.

I like to look reasonably well put together and need to look smart for work but I don’t think I would bother with all of that for a girls’ weekend, personally.

Each to their own.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 23/09/2025 19:07

I'm lucky enough to be able to work whilst I'm in the hairdressers chair. For nails, lashes, brows and other appts I can't work during, the kids are with DH.

NCNC71624 · 23/09/2025 19:08

I just started using press on nails, I box dye my hair and tint my own eyebrows (I am qualified! Not tinting them with hair dye!). I just go to a salon to get my eyebrows waxed every 4/5 weeks and my DH has the DC that isn't on full time school yet.

That's very judgemental! Plenty of people I know love getting stuff like that done, me included. Personally I think it all looks lovely, providing it's done well.

Wannabedisneyprincess · 23/09/2025 19:21

i get my nails and waxing done in my lunch hour, guessing for a 2 hour nail app you had mani and pedi and acrylic nails as I get gels and to remove my old colour and have the new one added today took 35 mins

my hairdresser is mobile and comes to mine in an evening after she has done her kids tea, and she cuts DDs hair then DH puts both kids to bed while I have my hair cut and highlighted, however if I went to a salon I would go and my DH would look after the kids

BonfireNight1993 · 23/09/2025 19:22

I get my hair done during the working day while my child is at childcare!

InfoSecInTheCity · 23/09/2025 19:28

Eyebrows I go to a threading brow at the retail park a couple of minutes down the road at 9am on the dot, I’m done and dusted by 9.05am and back home at my desk by 9.30 at the latest. Hair and nails I usually get done together at a place that does both, 30 mins for hair then 30 mins for gel nails and I book the first appt on a Saturday or Sunday or the latest evening appts during the week. I go every 3 months not every 6 weeks though.

bluebettyy · 23/09/2025 19:53

I don’t see why you can’t unless you’re a single parent and can’t leave your children alone

Endofyear · 23/09/2025 20:14

Few of my friends had time for this when our children were young! I'm a lazy moo who doesn't bother dyeing my hair and just chop a bit off the bottom with my own scissors when it gets too long - never have my nails done either! No waxing, just a quick scrape with a bic razor in the shower 😂

Now our kids are older, more of my friends do hairdresser's and nail salon appointments - I'm still to lazy and would rather spend those hours doing other things!

KindnessIsKey123 · 23/09/2025 20:22

If you have a partner then you just book it in & they have the kids. I have flexitime so used to get a massage &. nails done every fortnight. It’s about priorities. I could do the hoovering & 3 loads of laundry, or I could get massage/hair/nails done. The housework is always going to be there.

I once saw a post where a woman said she could finally wash her hair when her child was age 3. Just put them on a bed with an iPad and get in the shower with the door open so you can see them.

If it makes you feel unhappy, do the Hairdresser thing, if it makes you feel happy do the low maintenance thing.

for me- I’m more of a priority than the dishwasher or hoovering. But I know for example my MIL Prefers a tidy house.

we are modern women - we can choose!

coxesorangepippin · 23/09/2025 20:26

I don't think I could physically sit still for that amount of time to get my hair done

A quick cut and blow dry is tedious enough

This. Or I go in my lunch break when I WFH.

But aren't you at work? I do this too but I squeeze it in over lunch or between calls on a WFH day.
