Suddenly I can’t drink alcohol

I have been quite a regular wine drinker until recently and used to enjoy a glass but I just can’t drink it, all of a sudden, I don’t like the taste and feel like I just can’t enjoy it or force it down.
I have been forced to stop drinking it by sudden unexplained aversion.

Has anyone else experienced this?

It is a common sign of pregnancy....or menopause.

FrenchandSaunders · 23/09/2025 13:12

I was pregnant when I felt like that.

skybluejo · 23/09/2025 13:13

I’m in my 40s and husband had a vacectomy years ago. I am definitely not pregnant.

Yes, went like this late 30s. Have had other people say it's common. I now can't drink wine at all and have mostly given up alcohol completely. My mum did the same at an older age, she thinks she has a sulfite allergy although I don't think that's the case with me. I'm only 41 now.

Yoyokitten · 23/09/2025 13:14

That is so strange, I was thinking the same thing the other day.
I reckon mine must be definitely menopause.
I just don't like it any more and get instant indigestion.
Nothing to worry about though, your liver will be happy 🤣

kiwiblue · 23/09/2025 13:14

To add I feel instantly unwell when I drink wine and now a lot of alcohol.

HardworkSendHelp · 23/09/2025 13:14

I would love to get this problem!

34ransum · 23/09/2025 13:15

Feel the same, mid 30s
Mine began after a very heavy night out and horrific hangover about 4 months ago
I used to drink a bottle a week, now I despise the taste and have zero craving
To be honest, I see it as a blessing

Ohthatsabitshit · 23/09/2025 13:17

Me too. Haven’t drunk a drop (bar one at a hen night I didn’t want) for three years. It makes absolutely no difference to my life until I meet someone who is weirdly offended by me not drinking. I care not.

lemoncrisp · 23/09/2025 13:18

Mounjaro has had this effect on me. Suddenly can't stand the taste of alcohol. Saves money and helps with weight loss! 😀

GoldDuster · 23/09/2025 13:18

I also have gone off drinking, not overnight but over the course of my mid to late forties. Don't care if I never drink again, can have a good cocktail or two, but that's the limit and wine I would pour down the sink.

SleepyLlamaFace · 23/09/2025 13:21

Another vote for peri-menopause. Can barely force down a glass or two a year nowadays!

isthismylifenow · 23/09/2025 13:21

It was the same for me. In my early 40s I could no longer drink red wine, as when I did for some reason it affected my kidneys. So I would then only drink white or rose at a push. Then a few years later I couldn't drink either of these, I would have strange reactions, like a sulphate allergy (numbness of face etc). So now I don't drink wine ever as the side effects were getting ridiculous.

I cannot even say I miss it at all.

childofthe607080s · 23/09/2025 13:22

first symptom of pregnancy

nomas · 23/09/2025 13:24

I think the WHO said the only acceptable level of alcohol is zero alcohol.

Isn't it a strange reaction. I have found this as well.

I really cannot see why someone else has so much concern for the fact I do not want an alcoholic drink.

But then again, I have the same issue with being single. I love it, but many people around me seem to be offended about it.

Any new lumps or bumps? This was a sign of cancer in someone I know, probably completely dramatic response here but just have a quick think/check over yourself pleased

Mosy likely peri menopause - yet another wonderful symptom 🙄

I’m perimenopausal and have gone off most alcohols, can’t tolerate it either and feel like crap for a few days if I drink, mainly don’t miss it

I can just about drink Rose and Prosecco

55larry · 23/09/2025 13:52

I was in my forties when red wine caused my face to go red and my neck to get itchy. I blamed my daughter at the time because I was fine until I had her at 40. I found that I gradually couldn’t drink any form of alcohol. When I was in my fifties I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I wonder if the two things could connected.

TattooStan · 23/09/2025 14:26

I love having one or two glasses at the weekend, but I've become almost pathologically terrified of overdoing it. It makes me feel horrific to have even just, say, 4 small glasses with food. DH and I are friends with a couple who are pretty boozy and, they're SO lovely, but I dread seeing them.

tinymoon · 23/09/2025 14:30

This has happened to me. I’ve just recently realised I’m getting a histamine intolerance as I’m getting older which I think is the reason for it.

isitmyturn · 23/09/2025 14:36

Used to love wine, now it gives me terrible heartburn even though I still enjoy the taste. If I want to drink alcohol now I have beer.

Freysimo · 23/09/2025 14:36

I couldn't understand why I'd suddenly gone off my favourite wine. I then developed reflux and colonoscopy revealed I had hiatus hernia, now on Lansoprazole. Not sure if there's any scientific evidence for this though! I still don't really enjoy wine the way that I used to prior to h.h.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 23/09/2025 14:51

DP had this when she was pregnant, in fact it was literally the only warning sign she was pregnant!

She's gone right off it again now, but this time it's due to being peri-menopausal. It's started making her feel bloated and she'll get killer hangovers of even a couple of beers.
