To remind people NOT to use hot water bottles?

Laptopsas · 21/09/2025 22:40

There is another thread running about cold weather and hit water bottles are being recommended as safe. They are not.

Get a heated throw or the microwaveable bags.

If you must use one, don’t use boiling water.

Regularly is an exaggeration.

And they will also have just as frequently seen burns and scalds from hot drinks, food preparation, baths/showers etc.

Anyone working in A&E will have seen many, many cases of horrific injuries resulting from getting in a car, riding a bike, gardening, using stairs (and in fact steps outside), camping, caring for or walking pets etc etc.

Some of the people I know who have worked in A&E are the most dare devil types. Once you've seen people die from only venturing into their loft or trimming their hedge, I guess you think "why not bungee jump and go dramatically".....

You’re making a lot of assumptions in your reply. But ok.

All kinds of things are dangerous if you sit in them! Doesn't mean people should be told 'not to use them' for their INTENDED use.

Yes you're right of course. I would have said the same before the Hot Water Bottle Attack!

Wowthatwasabigstep · 22/09/2025 06:48

Oh don’t be so silly, many people use them on every cold Autumn and Winter night without any ill effect. Maybe you could start campaigning to ban hot drink as surely they are a bigger risk.

Anybody with a modicum of intelligence will be able to figure out that over time hot water bottles can perish and that they could leak as a result. Use off the boil water and once the stopper is in place invert and check for drips or leaks.

The thread is discussing not using something due to risk.

Yes, very specifically, hot water bottles.

MaiAamWaliHun · 22/09/2025 06:50

I've used hotwater bottles for years, they're great. I had a wheatbag set on fire. Things happen.

Tastaturen · 22/09/2025 06:50

JustMyView13 · 22/09/2025 06:49

Yes, very specifically, hot water bottles.

Or, not using an everyday item due to perceived risk!
Name on item or activity that presents absolutely no risk.

Chemenger · 22/09/2025 06:51

FrondsofFriday · 21/09/2025 22:48

I had a wheat bag catch fire once.

I’ve gone back to a HWB. But I do replace it every couple of years and I don’t put boiling water in it. So i’m ok with my life choices but thanks for the PSA.

Our house sitter came very close to setting a bed on fire with a wheat bag. The sheets and duvet were scorched.

Superhansrantowindsor · 22/09/2025 06:52

Wheat bags are useless.
I’ll admit though that I haven’t replaced our hot water bottles in years and probably use water too hot. I will change that and will buy new bottles.

Could we just remind people to use half of their brain and not be fuck wits? Would that cover it??

You wouldn't believe how silly many people are, you really wouldn't!

Tastaturen · 22/09/2025 06:54

JustMyView13 · 22/09/2025 06:53

No risk? Sure.

You seem to have forgotten the list.

Autumn1990 · 22/09/2025 06:54

The wheat bags are very dangerous, even with correct use the risk of catching fire is high. Lots of fire brigades have warnings on their websites.
I always use a hot water bottle. It literally says on the don’t use boiling water

bloodredfeaturewall · 22/09/2025 06:56

grain bags go cold quickly and give out moisture.
and I don't like the idea of electricity in bed.

I will keep my hwb thanks.

You seem to have forgotten the list.

Name on item or activity that presents absolutely no risk.

What list? You seem to state that the item (hot water bottle) presents absolutely no risk.
Or am I to unpick something else from that sentence?

Eh? No unpicking required (other than on meant to say an, but that's fairly obviously a typo).
I asked you to name something that presents absolutely no risk.
Nowhere did I state that a HWB presents absolutely no risk.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 22/09/2025 06:59

If you can’t use a hot water bottle correctly can we also remind people not to:

Drive
walk down stairs
Make a cup of tea
Cross the road
Eat Grapes or hot dogs
swim

In fact if people could just wrap themselves in cotton wool and sit on the sofa - that would be great

Ah, but cotton wool is a choking hazard, and sitting still for too long isn't recommended either....😂😂😂

Yep, name an (typo on) item that represents absolutely no risk, can you?

applegingermint · 22/09/2025 07:03

Tryingtokeepgoing · 22/09/2025 05:33

The risk of an electrical fire is far higher than that of a hot water bottle leaking, and the consequences far worse. This is very much a situation where people don’t understand relative risk

Can you back up that assertion with some facts?

Otherwise it’s just your opinion.

GiantTeddyIsTired · 22/09/2025 07:04

Laptopsas · 21/09/2025 22:53

If I’d meant those I’d have written them.

Did you not leave space at the top and squeeze the excess air out?

If not, of course it exploded - you just heated up a load of air until it expanded more than the hot water bottle could handle.

Did you read the instructions? They're normally something like :

To safely use a hot water bottle, first, check it for damage. Let boiling water cool for 15-20 minutes before filling the bottle to no more than two-thirds full. Gently squeeze out the air before sealing the stopper tightly to prevent leaks. Always use the provided cover or wrap the bottle in a towel for safety, as the bottle should never be in direct contact with skin. Never use a hot water bottle in a microwave or as a cushion, and replace it every two years.

I think this might be a you problem, and anything with danger potential is an issue in your hands.

MissFitss · 22/09/2025 07:04

You're being unreasonable.

There have always been some accidents from HWB and many other things we use. Usually it's because people overfill them or scald themselves when filling them. Or use ones that are too old and they burst in the bed.

It doesn't mean you think they should be banned.

Common sense is the answer.

I've used them for 50 years.

I don’t need to. Because I never said that life is risk free.
Again, this thread is discussing the risk associated with hot water bottles specifically. And that risk is that they can burst or leak and burn you.
