AIBU for not knowing they had an expiration date: 2yrs after date of production. Mine was produced July 2006. Everything OK, aside from wet bed.

So you got an extra 18 yrs. I'd say that's a great deal.

AlmondsAreGreat · 30/09/2024 00:12

Do you mean hot water bottle? I’m still using the one I inherited from my Gran, and she died 27 years ago. God knows when she bought it.

Sorry, yes, a hot water bottle. Cannot edit title.

I was aware but I do think that it's something that should be made more apparent on their packaging.

Probably made in China. As if they give a shit.

Sorry OP, awful you have a wet bed now......

OhHeyOwlFace · 30/09/2024 00:23

@AlmondsAreGreat you run a big risk of scalding. The rubber will be perished even if you can't see that

TheUsualChaos · 30/09/2024 00:23

I've got one that's at least 30 years old. Boots. Can only assume they used to be made of tougher stuff!

Christwosheds · 30/09/2024 00:24

As an adult I still used the one my parents had when newlyweds. Lasted over forty years. My Granny’s ones were even more ancient. The rubber can perish over time but they do seem pretty durable.

User19876536484 · 30/09/2024 00:24

I had one split once. When I woke up I thought I’d wet the bed,

Thank you - I don’t use it very often, which I suppose might make it worse. When I do I put it in to warm the bed and then remove it when I get in - but it could go anytime, so I’ll retire it.

Know someone who suffered really quite severe abdominal burns from this happening. If you have an old water bottle definitely stop using it!

DarkHollowTree · 30/09/2024 01:19

If you look closely at probably newer ones they do have an 'expiry date' on them

suburberphobe · 30/09/2024 01:23

I had this when my waters broke at 8 months..... 😯

CoolStoryBra · 30/09/2024 01:26

This happened to a colleague, they had severe burns on the shoulder and back. No signs there was anything wrong with it beforehand, so I threw ours out and bought new as they were 10 years old at least,

TossedSaladandSE · 30/09/2024 02:18

Thank goodness you didn't burn yourself

Rubber deteriorates

thistlepiedpiper · 30/09/2024 05:06

A woman on here posted the dangers of using an expired hot water bottle in bed after hers burst on her back and legs. It was absolutely awful. I will find it later

rwalker · 30/09/2024 05:19

This pops up in the news every now and again

think the problem us years ago everything was of a higher quality ( which was reflected in the price)
nowadays it’s a disposable world much cheaper last a fraction of the time

think help the aged or some like that did a campaign and swapped out new for old hit water bottles

tbh I’m only aware of this as saw it in a tv program once mine were years old

Skyrainlight · 30/09/2024 08:25

I had no idea there was an expiration date.

Tellysavelas · 30/09/2024 08:31

NHS says to replace every 2 years which seems madness to me. Maybe that applies to people who use it very frequently.

Yes, was it in the spring? I remember I would still have been using mine for a few days, but binned them all immediately. For the price of a new one it’s not worth keeping them.

abracadabra1980 · 30/09/2024 08:32

HRTWT but I read somewhere that there is a date on the inside of the top of each hot water bottle. Mine had them and were so old I replaced them. They need replacing every few years.

Radiat · 30/09/2024 08:33

God, I thought they lasted longer than that! I’ll need to replace mine I guess.

Yes, I read that thread, and chucked ours out - well over ten years old - and bought a new one.

I don’t remembers the one I had as a child being replaced. Perhaps the rubber was thicker/stronger then.

Tellysavelas · 30/09/2024 08:35

I think quality also differs store to store. I have one from Boots and one from Primark, the Boots one seems better quality.
