To remind people NOT to use hot water bottles?

There is another thread running about cold weather and hit water bottles are being recommended as safe. They are not.

Get a heated throw or the microwaveable bags.

If you must use one, don’t use boiling water.

I've been using them for over 50 years and my mother has been using them for over 80 years, never had a leak or scald. However I don't use boiling water and I expel the air out of the top. I also buy proper ones made of actual rubber not some type of plastic. I used to give my children one and now give my grandchild one when she stays over and it's cold. When it gets very cold I use an electric under blanket which I leave on all night.

BruFord · 22/09/2025 01:26

@Athreedoorwardrobe I didn’t need medical attention when I was burnt either. I googled how to treat burns and kept a close eye on it (it was on my side) for signs of infection. It healed up.

coxesorangepippin · 22/09/2025 01:32

Agreed

I had one burst during the night, thought I'd wet the bloody bed

Lucky it was cold

YouCantParkThere · 22/09/2025 01:45

I cannot stand the smell of a hot water bottle. That horrible rubber smell.

When I was growing up we had glass irn bru bottles filled with roasting water wrapped in a towel 😂

We did this too!! I was just thinking this! My mum filling big glass bottles with warm water and wrapping them in blankets 😭

Pinepeak2434 · 22/09/2025 01:57

I have to admit they have always worried me, one of my teens loved using one last winter and I just kept having visions of the thing leaking and scolding her. The wheat bags sound good, never heard of them before.

Switcher · 22/09/2025 02:10

Whatever.

babyboy520 · 22/09/2025 02:16

I think hot water bottles are absolutely fine if you’re careful with them – I’ve always found them really useful. But once you’ve got kids in the house, you do end up being a lot more cautious about things like that.

TempestTost · 22/09/2025 02:17

I wish people would fuck off about being bossy pants telling people what to do. Hot water bottles are the least of most people's worries.

To think I've been moaning about all the random fireworks going off in my area at odd times of the year.

It all makes sense now.

They were exploding hot water bottles 💣🔥

😂

Are you supposed to fill them from the hot water tab?

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/09/2025 02:53

Don't know why the OP is getting such a hard time here.

I've got a plastic disk which I can heat up in the microwave. It stays warm all night. I would say it's much safer than a hot water bottle and more effective because it stays warm for much longer.

I also have an electoric blanket that goes under my sheet. Both the blanket and the disk are amazing for back pain.

Just because somebody has used hot water bottles without incident for many years, it doesn't prove that they are the safest option. Technology changes.

Oakcupboard · 22/09/2025 02:53

To be fair I’ve been really, really badly burned by one …but I still take one to bed with me every night of the year 🙈 …my feet get so cold it’s painful and nothing else keeps the heat

Yes

Are people putting boiling water in their hot water bottles?!

Yes I always do!!! Never had a problem. But I “burp” it after I fill it and before putting stopper in.

Piglet89 · 22/09/2025 03:27

Only on Mumsnet could someone make using a hot water bottle sound as risky as heliskiing.

It’s just a thread. There’s no legally binding element. Don’t get yourself upset. It’s okay.

Agree. The wheat bags are so much better, safer and easier to use.

But they don't last any time at all. A hwb stays warm all night.

Ooo now, don’t be a bossy pants. You’ll upset the PP.

You should use kettle boiled was (straight from the tap causes it to perish more quickly) but allow it to cool.

& yes, you should let any air out.

if you're happy to use 'just boiled' water, that's a choice you're entitled to make. But I choose to cook it down as I don't want to take the risk of a leak with boiling water.

Agree. The wheat bags are so much better, safer and easier to use.

They're also absolutely useless and stay warm for about 3,5 seconds.

Slinky987 · 22/09/2025 04:14

They don't 'explode', the rubber degrades and they 'open' themselves.

It's good practice to change them every three years or so.

If you do that you should have no problems.

They're perfectly safe if used properly.
