Grown men doing wheelies

Slowlyslowlysurely · 21/09/2025 11:49

AIBU to think that the 40+ year old man who has just whizzed past my house on the pavement doing a wheelie looks absolutely ridiculous?

a) why on earth is he on the pavement of a quiet residential street?
b) what would make him think “hey you know what would be really cool, if I just yanked one wheel off the floor and balanced precariously as I fly past people’s front doors!”

this is a frequent occurrence round here….does anyone else have a city of man children wheelying about like 10 year olds?

Yes. YABU

We are meant to have got past thinking people are ridiculous or shaming them for it (which is what you're doing by inviting ridicule).

Stop it.

What/who are you going to pick on next?

If you want to talk about safety or annoyamce or stuff then that's a different world.

Unacceptableinthe80s · 21/09/2025 12:24

So you're not concerned about safety? Just what they look like? Who cares. People who like to have fun are not usually concerned with how they look, I'm in my 50's and roller skate in my neighborhood, I give no shits what my neighbours think I look like. Do you very rigid ideas of how adults should behave?

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 21/09/2025 12:25

FuzzyWolf · 21/09/2025 12:05

That was why I asked to try to accurately gauge the potential risk as a wheelie on a pavement where people have driveways and can see in advance really isn’t something to be concerned about. If you open your front door without any visibility and get knocked over, it’s a different matter.

But, to be fair, that's all about riding fast, and on the pavement ... not specifically related to wheelies

Ketzele · 21/09/2025 12:28

I live on a major London road, and we used to have a big problem with trainee roadmen doing wheelies in front of cars, swerving in front of them st the last minute. Strangely they have all gone now. Maybe Darwin's Law took care of the problem. But no 40 year olds - yet.

myfavouritemutant · 21/09/2025 12:34

Wheelies are fun though. So YABU - it’s sad to have a cut off age after which you no longer deem them acceptable.

however YANBU re cycling on the pavement.

warmapplepies · 21/09/2025 12:36

YANBU to think they shouldn't be on the pavement.

But YABU to think there should be age limit to having fun.

LynetteScavo · 21/09/2025 12:38

Do wheelies become cool
again at a certain age? I think an 80yo doing wheelies would be cool.

So no wheelies from 11yo- 75yo, any anyone younger or older crack on.

Yes exactly this. Better to be out doing wheelies than in wanking themselves stupid over internet porn lol.

Disgusting behaviour

Smartiepants79 · 21/09/2025 12:52

If the pavement is empty and he is not causing obstruction or nuisance to anyone then who cares? Do you not do anything silly and childish just for fun/nostalgiaif ? It’s not any different to dancing round the kitchen to Take That…. If they’re doing it an way that causes obstruction or danger to others then that’s a different story.

Bippybop · 21/09/2025 12:56

Just a bloke having some fun on a bike tbh.
Ive seen grown men on skateboards and i thin why not he's not hurting anyone.

Ive seen women in their 40s and 50s dressed up and acting like their in their 20s.
I dont think stupid i think good for them having that confidence.
Maybe they couldn't do it years ago.
Good for them.

Take that back i dance to spice girls in my kitchen.
Pun intended lol.

NotSmallButFunSize · 21/09/2025 13:05

I agree with you OP - they are invariably the kind of thick knuckledraggers who have never grown up and do it to "look cool" 🙄

I know it's a taboo word on MN but - such chavs.

I just think "twat" and don't give the attention they are so desperately craving.

And yes, I am judgemental and I don't even care

No but my original comment that the replies relate to was.

ChocolateMagnum · 21/09/2025 13:14

It seems like two issues here:

  1. AIBU to think some roads are not safe to do wheelies on whatever age the person doing them? YANBU, but of course there are roads where it is safe.
  1. AIBU to think grown men having fun look ridiculous. YABVU and a misery guts. Fun doesn't have a use-by date, FFS 🙄
HangingOver · 21/09/2025 13:22

I sometimes take a little run up and take my feet off the ground when I'm wheeling the trolley in the supermarket if the aisle is empty and no one is looking

NoisyMonster678 · 21/09/2025 13:24

If he had a brain, he'd be dangerous.

I'm pretty sure the brain is responsible for balance and coordination 🤷

beAsensible1 · 21/09/2025 11:53

well doing a wheely on a main road would be stupid. Why can’t a grown man have a bit of fun? They’re not hurting anyone.

A moterbike rider pulled out in front of us on a main road and pulled a wheelie several months ago. The reason ppl get pissed off when being held up due to an accident is because they are sometimes caused by stupidity

MissyB1 · 21/09/2025 14:23

FuzzyWolf · 21/09/2025 12:17

My children always loved me spinning them around in their pram which has to be the younger years equivalent of a wheelie.

Im sure they did, not quite the same as the pram getting hit by a bike though.

Jellyheadbang · 21/09/2025 14:25

Slowlyslowlysurely · 21/09/2025 12:01

@FuzzyWolf funnily enough not everyone does have a driveway.

Broken Britain 😭

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/09/2025 14:35

Yanbu, it is ridiculous, the force could kill or seriously injure a child leaving their garden.
Teenagers on an electric scooter dressed in black, wearing masks are scary.

lljkk · 21/09/2025 18:37

I really want to learn to bunnyhop on my bicycle, maybe I need to watch a video.
Location issues aside, I admire anyone who can do a wheelie.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/09/2025 18:50

I think it is those 40+ old men who attach playing cards to their bicyles so it sounds like they have a moped are worse.

cannaethink · 21/09/2025 19:09

Chazbots · 21/09/2025 12:09

I'm in my 50s...

They're actually manuals, there's a difference, apparently.

It's on my wish list to learn how to do, probably in a park tho. 😎

A wheelie uses pedalling to balance, but a manual has no pedalling so you’d need to be going downhill then use body weight and movement to balance on the back wheel.
I can do neither so am always impressed by anyone of any age who can 😁
