To ask for your favourite family games

Hi all

I'm after ideas for family games, ideally ones that are suitable for/will entertain both a 5.5yo & a 12.5yo

We've got monopoly, hungry hippos, taskmaster, kids vs adults trivia and have ordered jumanji and uno. Taskmaster is the current favourite (with swapping out tasks that are beyond the youngest).

On our wishlist is:

Cards against humanity & various similar (families against conformity etc)
What do you meme
Scrabble
Exploding kittens
The six

Open to all suggestions and other ideas for things you do together as a family indoors

Those ages are too far apart. The 12yo will be bored or the 5 yo will lose.

The 12yo is quite good at playing to the youngests level/pulling back if he's winning too hard, they're competitive but he's old enough to play in a way that keeps the game going rather than just thrashing his brother 🤣

Some will just be more for us and the eldest, like cards against humanity, he's been spending too much time disconnected in his room so tbf this is more for his benefit but the youngest likes to join in if he can, so ones like taskmaster and jumanji (judging from reviews) fit quite well, so after some non reading based suggestions too :)

Jumanji is shite and I wouldn’t play CAH with a 12 year old.

Blokus
Labyrinth

Is it very adult? I've been on the fence about it, and have put it off for Christmas due to the price, he really wants the proper one but I was wondering if the teen/kid versions might be more appropriate

Cards against humanity is NOT for 12 year olds.

Have you even had a look at the contents?

Littlemisscapable · 21/09/2025 01:31

Taco goat cheese pizza

The junior version of CAH would probably work though

londonbanana · 21/09/2025 01:58

There's a kids version of CAH. It's good (some are slightly on the edge of being too rude).

Kids Articulate? It can also be used alongside the adult version if you like and have both.

Junior scrabble

Monopoly deal

Holidaytimeyay · 21/09/2025 02:17

We have kid’s CAH and I wouldn’t get it for a 12 year old.
How about Rapidough? UNO, Monopoly deal or Dobble are all good.

My 6 and 13 year old played Splendor with me on Friday… it’s quite quick and the younger one has been playing since 5, but has only recently caught onto rhe strategy element. She beat me!

ticket to ride is good for rhe eldest but I think requires too much concentration span for 5.

Sleeping queens is a hit, as is a game called Cabo but you can only buy fake versions of that now. But I would recommend!

Azul is another one I’ve played with both ages before (though I prefer Splendor).

if you have a Waterstones, they have decent game collections now.

Eatinghurts · 21/09/2025 04:55

Uno?

happy puzzle has a good games section

Nomnomnew · 21/09/2025 05:05

Herd Mentality is a game that suits a lot of ages. It’s easy to pick up but a lot of fun and I can imagine with the youngest they might throw a few funny curveballs!

I’m not sure if they still sell it but I used to really like cranium - it has lots of different types of question/ challenge, from trivia to singing/ humming, sculpting with clay, drawing etc so there’s something everyone can do and you play on teams.

akkakk · 21/09/2025 05:31

Quirkle - very visual and pattern based works well for all ages

rummikub

loads of card games like chase the ace / Black Maria / etc

You can get a family version of cards against humanity @Anonononybut yes, don’t buy the normal one!!

Nomnomnew · 21/09/2025 07:30

Also, sequence is fun and good for a range of ages. You have to make rows of counters by matching playing cards to the board, and some cards let you play anywhere or remove coins. It’s a game that’s quite easy to pick up and which was always popular in our house for us as children, our parents and grandma.

Exploding Kittens

Poetry for Neanderthals

Labyrinth

Coffeebreakneeds · 21/09/2025 08:02

Pictureuka. Very simple, quick so you are not tied in for ages but can carry on as long as you want. Mine used to really enjoy it.

HouseFullOfChaos · 21/09/2025 09:39

I second Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. It's fabulous for the whole family

Eatinghurts · 21/09/2025 10:59

Has anyone played uzzle popped up on my fband claims to be multi age

VivienneDelacroix · 21/09/2025 11:02

We recently got Whirly Derby. It's a lot of fun, really easy to learn, and very suitable for all ages. We played yesterday with an age range of 9 - 77. And everyone loved it.

Runningischeaperthantherapy · 21/09/2025 11:08

I’m glad taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza is getting so much love - it’s in the gift cupboard as a stocking filler. We also have sushi go and happy salmon waiting for Xmas; both bought on recommendations.

we already have exploding kittens

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/09/2025 11:08

Othello was a longstanding favourite here its only 2 players but all the kids loved it. Also frustration/ludo did and still does as adults amuse them.
Monopoly takes ages and always ends in tears. No idea why it's so popular

FlipperSkipper · 21/09/2025 11:16
