For not understanding why men don't put their hoods up in the rain?

There's a football match on in our house and it's absolutely pouring but I've noticed none of the managers or men standing in the little manager section have their hoods up. All of their coats have hoods which they've chosen not to use and they're getting absolutely soaked.

DH claims they don't want to look weak. Can this be true? They look more ridiculous to me getting soaked. Do men think putting a hood up is pathetic or is it just football managers? Would you respect someone's authority if they used a hood? An umbrella?

What going through their soggy little heads?

YABU - I can't respect people using a hood
YANBU - use your hood you soggy little man

Hoods make you lose your peripheral vision and they want to watch the match play presumably

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 20/09/2025 17:57

Harder to see everything with your hood up

Tagyoureit · 20/09/2025 17:57

Not cool, innit?

DustyMaiden · 20/09/2025 17:59

Don’t want to look like a hoodlum. Everyone knows people with hoods are dodgy.
Aliso they just rub a towel over their heads. No blow drying.

ScurryfungeSpuddle · 20/09/2025 18:00

When you're at a football match your head is constantly moving left to right to watch the game.

Obviously the hood would get in the way of your peripheral vision.

seventyfivepercent · 20/09/2025 18:00

I find hoods to be uncomfortable and hinder peripheral vision. I only put mine up to stop my hair going frizzy, I guess most men have short hair that dries quickly. Skin dries very easily so no problem with face getting wet, then a coat stops my clothes getting wet.

Blarn · 20/09/2025 18:01

I also suspect it is because they couldn't see as much going on with the hood up.

Also, solidarity with the players, linesmen etc who cannot wear hoods. They will all remember the wally with the brolly.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 20/09/2025 18:02

It's not for vision. Everyone in the crowd has a hood up.

I never put a hood up or use an umbrella. I find it impossible to find hoods that arent massive and just fall over your face, I cant hear as well and when you turn your head, you end up looking at the inside of the hood because it doesnt turn with you

Umbrellas are a massive ball ache and cause more problems than they solve.

Not a male/female thing. Just some of us are sensible thats all.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/09/2025 18:06

I don’t put my hood up. I hate them. It’s nothing to do with looking strong or weak but the rain genuinely doesn’t bother me - it’s water and I’ve got years of experience of drying myself after getting wet - thank you, showering and bathing 🤣

Darksideoftheplanet · 20/09/2025 18:09

I have a big head and big hair so most hoods don't fit properly. Maybe it's that?

This would be my guess. It massively restricts your vision.

Plus, after about 30 seconds, if it's raining hard, your head is about as wet as it going to get, keeping the hood down won't make it get any wetter.

user2848502016 · 20/09/2025 18:11

DH puts his hood up. He walks quite a lot in all weathers so he has good quality waterproofs and uses the hoods!
I use my hood too mainly because my hair is very frizz prone!

Yes exactly, they’re in the crowd. Not managers who need to see everything that’s going on in detail

TheatricalLife · 20/09/2025 18:14

I actually don't like having my hood up as it makes me far too hot, especially when walking/hiking. I tie up my hair and just get wet most of the time, unless I have a brolly. I also don't like my peripheral vision being blocked, it makes me feel claustrophobic!

FancyQuoter · 20/09/2025 18:14

I am female, and I don't put my hood up when I am watching my kid play football, or when I run even. Is that ok with you?

They look more ridiculous to me getting soaked.
I am soaked any way.

Would you respect someone's authority if they used a hood? An umbrella?
Umbrellas should be banned at sports events, if they are not already. They stop everyone around to see anything, they are a menace. Who the heck takes an umbrella?

The players don't have a hood on, and they survive. Coaches (and spectators) will survive too.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/09/2025 18:14

Most rain is less annoying than a hood obstructing your hearing, flopping around or being in the way of your peripheral vision. I often start off using a hood and give up after a few minutes.

Admittedly I much prefer a hat/ cap, but they can bring issues like storage.

Most men won't have the prolonged bother of wet hair compared to women with longer, thicker hair.

It's not for vision. Everyone in the crowd has a hood up.

Everyone in the crowd is not in charge of one of the teams.

ninjahamster · 20/09/2025 18:17

I never have my hood up. In fact it is very rare that I wear a coat tbh. I don’t use umbrellas either. I like the feel of rain.

why are you so invested in this?

And you are wrong, at least for some coaches, it's about the vision.

Yet another attempt at man-bashing, I expect.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 20/09/2025 18:25

Hoods block peripheral vision and hearing. Think of a horse with blinders on. If you can't hear or see properly around you, you have no situational awareness. In addition to the lack of hearing, the sound of the rain hitting the hood can also be very loud and drown other things out. You want to know what's going on around you especially if you're part of a crowd of people.

It's also a man thing. The number of times my husband has pulled me out of the way of a takeaway food rider while I've been buried in my phone.

Men are hyperaware. Women not so much.

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/09/2025 18:25

If most of the crowd (who are higher up and likely have a better view of the whole pitch without moving their heads so much) have their hoods up - given most will also be male...

Then it isn't having or not having a willy that is the reason.

PP have it - its because hoods limit peripheral vision and if you need to speak to someone who is not directly in front of you, that is also difficult.

Coaches/managers on the side of the pitch need to watch AND speak to folks. So hoods up would make that hard, you'd have to keep moving or taking it down. Why bother.

Tollington · 20/09/2025 18:30

The subs on the bench have all got their hoods up. The manager needs to be able to see everything, he can’t switch off

The people in the crowd with their hoods up are not managers
