For not understanding why men don't put their hoods up in the rain?

There's a football match on in our house and it's absolutely pouring but I've noticed none of the managers or men standing in the little manager section have their hoods up. All of their coats have hoods which they've chosen not to use and they're getting absolutely soaked.

DH claims they don't want to look weak. Can this be true? They look more ridiculous to me getting soaked. Do men think putting a hood up is pathetic or is it just football managers? Would you respect someone's authority if they used a hood? An umbrella?

What going through their soggy little heads?

YABU - I can't respect people using a hood
YANBU - use your hood you soggy little man

Haha. This is hilarious but from my perspective not universal. My husband is the king of weather appropriate clothing. First sign of rain, waterproof hat, probably 2 hoodies (up), raincoat, waterproof socks and gloves! (I kid you not). I'm the terrible hoodless one in my house.

It's not for vision. Everyone in the crowd has a hood up.

Everyone in the crowd isn't managing the team they're watching...

Drachuughtty · 20/09/2025 18:37

@soupyspoonim intrigued what problems umbrellas cause when they do obviously solve one significant problem of getting soaked....?

lazyarse123 · 20/09/2025 18:44

I hate hoods. Even took the hood off my coat and threw it away and I only wear that when it's really siling down.

scalt · 20/09/2025 18:57

Why men don't like to wear hoods?

They were once banned from a shopping centre (Bluewater famously banned hoodies).
They don't want someone to say "hug a hoodie!"
They want to rebel against their mums telling them to put their hood up when it rains.
They think hoods and sou'-westers are for wimps.

It's not for vision. Everyone in the crowd has a hood up.

The managers are there to do a job and that involves actively watching and listening to what's going on on the pitch.

The crowd don't need to pay as close attention if they don't want to.

They're awkward to hold, they blow around, they drip heavy droplets, they bash people and bash into me, they block vision.

Problems all round

And most of the time they dont even stop you getting wet, you're either wet at the front or at the back, you can take your pick. Or sometimes both ways round depending on how blowy it is.

Rewis · 20/09/2025 19:42

I coach football and don't wear my hood at games. Too restricting. Sometimes I have a hat on though. Not always

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/09/2025 19:47

So they can see and hear?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 20/09/2025 19:51

Thanks for the answers. You've inspired me to create a range of waterproof coats with extra wide hoods offering improved visibility and audio range. Watch out for me on Dragons Den, hopefully I'll be able to give a 10% discount code to MN when they launch.

I can’t say I’ve ever noticed this even when it’s raining cats and dogs at footie matches. I’ll have a look next time.

soupyspoon · 20/09/2025 20:18

What do women coaches and mangers do, keep their hoods up?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/09/2025 18:06

I don’t put my hood up. I hate them. It’s nothing to do with looking strong or weak but the rain genuinely doesn’t bother me - it’s water and I’ve got years of experience of drying myself after getting wet - thank you, showering and bathing 🤣

Ditto - it's water not hydrochloric acid, and unless it's accompanied by a force 9 gale I'd rather have an unhindered but wet head. But yes, because the OP saw some men without their hoods up it's yet more evidence that every single man is a knuckle-dragging caveman desperate to assert his alpha status at all times. They're so stupid.

Tbh the main reason I replied to you, though, was to ask if your name was a Carter USM reference? I bloody love Carter!

ilovepixie · 20/09/2025 20:35

Hoods are for losers!! Like being a teenager and going out on a winters night and your dad asking where’s you coat, and you saying wise up Dad who wears a coat. 😂😂

But they’re not managing the team!

gilletwoes · 20/09/2025 20:51

I too remember the Wally with the brolly. No manager will put his hood up after that.

Absolutely a Carter reference! 😆

DH puts his hood up. He walks quite a lot in all weathers so he has good quality waterproofs and uses the hoods!
I use my hood too mainly because my hair is very frizz prone!

Mine too, proper wired hood on a goretex coat, as do I. DH needs to, he wears glasses and so can see bugger all in bad rain if his head is uncovered.

There would certainly be little point raising the hood on a hoody or anorak type of coat which didn’t shield the eyes effectively.

EmotionallyWeird · 20/09/2025 21:09

I wonder if any of them had curly hair. I'm not a man, but I like getting rain on my hair because it gives me the best curls ever.

deckchairmayhem · 20/09/2025 23:18

If you stop generalising, perhaps you'll be less confused🤣

BlissfullyBlue · 20/09/2025 23:19

Short hair + no make up = rain has no meaningful impact

It's not for vision. Everyone in the crowd has a hood up.

So I'm guessing most of the people in the crowd are men? Who you say have hoods up?
So you're question shouldn't really be about not understanding why men don't put up their hoods in the rain when you've just said that most have. 🤔
If the managers et al don't have them up isn't it pretty obvious from your own deductions that it must be related to vision and hearing?

Cantseetreesforthewood · 22/09/2025 18:03

I (female) hate putting a hood up. I'm not surexwhat it us about it, but it has to be absolutely chucking it down for me to put a hood up. My last winter coat had a detachable hood, and it just lived at home, so there was no possibility of being able to put it up.

Umbrellas just blow inside out when I try and use them, and you can't hold an umbrella stand keep hold of 2 kids!

intrepidpanda · 22/09/2025 18:21

What do you think is gonna happen?
I sometimes don't even put a jacket on. Never melted yet.

Hallywally · 22/09/2025 18:28

It wasn’t that cold at the weekend. I get really hot with my hood up and can only stand it if it’s actually cold, however wet it is.
