I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

LittleChopper · 18/09/2025 23:13

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You do know it’s not YOUR village 😂

What a peach you are, I am sure you are ‘one of those’ FB users too.

Probably. There’s also a pic of a laughing older guy in front of an ad when I scroll down, something about pensions. Seemed apt.

Well done Op, I have a penknife in my car purely for that purpose.

Seriously?

How often do you use it?

AngelicKaty · 19/09/2025 10:19

It doesn't belong to the flag shaggers either.

When will people realise that insults don't work either?

BluntPlumHam · 19/09/2025 10:23

squidsin · 19/09/2025 09:59

They're not 'flying' it. Hanging cheap tat off a motorway bridge isn't 'flying' the flag - you need a flagpole for that - it's just trying to make a statement about who's welcome in the UK and more specifically, who isn't.

Most migrants are too busy working, paying taxes and contributing to the benefits being claimed by these flag flyers, ironically.

AngelicKaty · 19/09/2025 10:23

cocog · 19/09/2025 10:05

It’s not racist to fly English flags in England and the people arriving will know it’s England.
But they are being put up to tell the government we’re upset about the situation in reality.
I agree with legal migration in managed numbers and welcome and appreciate it we can all be enriched by meeting people from different countries and some are amazing and kind people but the illegal immigrant situation in England is out of hand were a small island It’s too many people.
I can’t even take my children to the local park because the people who live in the hotel very close to us are hiding in the hedges filming the children and I dread to think what would happen if kids were alone. why record a six year old riding her bike they are not safe to be around children. We shouldn’t have to live like this it’s there actions as apparent guests in the country I object to not where there from and the £9 million a day it’s costing us to house them from taxpayers money when the NHS is on the brink of collapse and the education system is failing is just wrong it’s our money the government are mismanaging it.
As for the flag it’s an expression of someone else’s opinion and because you don’t agree with it you took it away if that makes you feel better so be it.
I think you would in all honesty feel differently if you had a hotel at the end of your street because I no longer feel safe in my own house.

So you've filmed these people filming your children and reported them to the police, have you?

I've not read the thread, nor am I going to, but just wanted to say thank you OP.

If it had been a year ago, I'd agree. Now, it's a symbol of racism. Frightening, when you're the target.

It's not a symbol of racism. People are putting up flags because they want to feel proud of their country and part of a community. Plenty of immigrants and non-white Brits are flying the flag. If you are offended by the flag of the country that you live in, then maybe you shouldn't be living here?

If racist people are targeting migrants with discrimination or violence etc then that's a different problem, and you'll need to address that properly. It's got nothing to do with flags.

LimpysGotCancer · 19/09/2025 09:11

Good for you OP. Be careful though, I've seen people confronted and videoed by the thick, nasty, violent, racist coked-up hooligans friendly patriots with legitimate concerns who put them up.

Are these the same type of thick, nasty, machete-waving, illiterate, anti-semitic traitorous people who put Palestinian flags all over Tower Hamlets ?

The Council are too scared to take them down BTW.

You don’t want to prioritise your own citizens.
You want the hard working, highly educated brown person who owns a nice house, has a high paying job, decent car to not have all that. That should be a white person instead in your mind.

That isn't what I said at all.

i take it you're a hard working, highly educated brown person who owns a nice house blah blah..........though.

If you are benefiting our country by being here ie you are a GP or something, then you are most welcome and please tell me how I can get a doctors appointment.

If you have come over illegally, have no skills that benefit us and plan to milk us for all the benefits you can get, then yes I don't want you here. Shock horror.

Digdongdoo · 19/09/2025 10:14

Well one is official figures and the other is guesses from randos on Twitter. One is "propaganda" and one isn't. You believe propaganda.

Read the words of the Met Police who released this estimate.

Compare the words used by them to describe the conduct of the Palestine Action demo, Notting Hill Carnival and then Saturday’s march. Then match the words with the incident and arrest figures and you will see there is no correlation. That’s propaganda and you are falling for it hook line and sinker.

Is that the best response you've got? Your picking me up on a spelling mistake is petty, and so what if I've misspelt a word? If rather do that than have no common sense.

If you're so proud to be English you should be capable of spelling correctly in your own language. And unfortunately you're not blessed with common sense either.

Tyddento · 19/09/2025 10:28

Slightyamusedandsilly · 19/09/2025 09:43

Bullshit. Reform are the party of racists. They're the new version of the BNP. Who spouted trash similar to Enoch Powell.

Reform party candidate quotes:

"black people should "get off [their] lazy arses" and stop acting "like savages"'

"scum"

"I hope your family get robbed, beaten or attacked."

Not exactly welcoming of other ethnicities. And this wasn't just a Reform supporter. It was one of their candidates.

A bit like the Labour Councillor who said that that white people should have their throats cut.....

Slightyamusedandsilly · 19/09/2025 10:30

squidsin · 19/09/2025 09:53

Interestingly, I'd advise her to leave him. Nobody sane wants to be married to a flag shagger.

They're like a ven diagram of:

racist
uneducated
violent

Lemonandorangecheescake · 19/09/2025 10:30

squidsin · 19/09/2025 10:01

Well yeah, it does. If someone graffities a bus stop and I clean it up, I'm performing a public service. For free.

Same with the flags. They're actually a form of vandalism when hung on bridges etc. There's a reason people aren't actually allowed to just hang anything they like over a motorway.

And what would happen if when you tried to rip or cut the flag down it blew out of your hands and onto someone's windscreen, causing an accident?

Would you blame whoever put the flag up in the first place? Or would you take responsibility? I don't think it's the latter.

wrongthinker · 19/09/2025 10:31

Londonismyjam · 19/09/2025 10:27

I rest my case 🙄

You mean, you agree with me? Or are all the black and Asian and Jewish people flying the union flag all racist scum in your opinion?

Really, I think if you hate England so much that the mere sight of its flag causes you to feel offended or fearful, then go and live somewhere else. Most people who come here do so because they value what England and Britain has to offer. If you don't, that's fine, but don't try and spoil it for everyone else.

AngelicKaty · 19/09/2025 10:31

Tamarasilkscarves · 19/09/2025 10:09

Cleaning up graffiti is different because you’re restoring public property.
Taking down a flag that someone put up, even if it’s on a bridge, is still interfering with someone else’s actions and could get you in trouble. That’s why it’s the authorities’ job to handle it, not individuals.

How could it get you into trouble any more than the person who hung it there?

YipIThinkHesMarried · 19/09/2025 10:31

I think this issue will sort itself out actually. Come November budget the shit is really going to hit the fan.
Once the country really starts going to pot surely the immigrants will not want to come here.
UK borrowing rises to worse-than-expected £18bn in August | Government borrowing | The Guardian

Down and down we go, where we end up nobody knows (till November at least...)

A bit like the Labour Councillor who said that that white people should have their throats cut.....

Mr Jones said his remarks were directed towards far-right activists who he said had left stickers on a train with razor blades hidden behind them

Slightly different from shouting abuse and inciting violence towards anyone with brown skin.

Idiotic

You'll have to explain what you mean. Because it's not obvious to me. What did the met say that makes you think they're lying about the attendance but not about anything else?

They're not putting it up because they want to feel proud of their country or want to feel part of their community, because it has the exact opposite effect on roughly half the population - including British people who were born here. You'd have to live under a rock not to realise that.

I bet they'd have something to say if any of their neighbours were hanging, say, a Pride flag, and wouldn't feel like it was simply an invitation to be part of the LGBT+ community.
