Birthday treat for reception class

MrsNA · 17/09/2025 19:36

My daughter’s 5th birthday is coming up and she really wanted to take some cupcakes for her class but we’ve just been notified that the school policy no longer allows cake to be bought in. I was wondering if anyone can suggest anything else she could take In, I was thinking some story books as a favour.

Haribo - small bags

SouthLondonMum22 · 17/09/2025 19:37

I was going to suggest Haribo too.

FionnulaTheCooler · 17/09/2025 19:38

Is she having a party? If so I'd just do the party favours there and leave school out of it. Getting each child in the class a book seems a bit OTT, my DD never came home with anything like that in 7 years of primary school.

MrsWalker2025 · 17/09/2025 19:39

If you do Haribo, maybe some chocolates or something for any Halal children

Leeds2 · 17/09/2025 19:39

Little notebook, pencil and rubber. Sort of school themed!

Personally, I wouldn't bother.

Saltandpepperlife · 17/09/2025 19:39

Mine usually take sweets/chocolates.
Books are for party bag/favours usually.

Hayley1256 · 17/09/2025 19:39

I'd suggest haribo too or things you can buy in sealed packs

shephardspieontoast · 17/09/2025 19:41

Little packets of haribo or squashums

The haribo strawberries are halal/vegan - I always make sure I include some. Skittles are also safe - last year we took mini bags of those in.

Superscientist · 17/09/2025 19:45

Please don't send in any food. You don't know about dietary requirements. My daughters school has a ban on sweets for healthy eating but also for kids that have other dietary needs. In her class there are kids that can't have sweets because of allergies, others that can only have vegan gelatine and another can't have sweets as they are a choking hazard for him.

Our school asks that if we want to do anything to bring in a book for the class library

Han86 · 17/09/2025 19:45

Check with the school what is allowed - lots of suggestions of sweets, but not all schools allow these either (mine does and haribo are usually handed out as these cover most children).
My friends school doesn't allow food items however and I think she did bubbles and stickers when her daughter was little.
Though like others have said there is no expectation to do this, and if having a party I would just do party bags for that.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 17/09/2025 19:45

Giving out sweets, like alms for the class to celebrate her.

Nah, don't be extra.

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 17/09/2025 19:47

They do Haribo in our school.

SquigglePigs · 17/09/2025 19:47

DD has just started year 2. At our school it's usually mini haribo bags, a sweet lolly or occasionally a fun size chocolate.

FairyBatman · 17/09/2025 19:48

Small packs of Haribo is the norm here.

Bitzee · 17/09/2025 19:49

Is it just cake that’s off the menu or is it all edibles? If you’re allowed then a small thing of sweets will be good but I would personally go something like love hearts over haribo because they’re vegan so anyone can have. I wouldn’t bother with random books, plastic tat etc. - save those for the party bags.

Lmnop22 · 17/09/2025 19:50

Could throw her a small party and invite the class? A really good way to get to know other kids and their parents in the class and you can do party favours?

butterdish93 · 17/09/2025 19:50

Just do all that at her party surely?
and keep her off school for the day - she’s only five!

AliasGrape · 17/09/2025 19:50

Is it just cake they’re not allowed or any sweets/ sugar?

If they’re not allowed any sweet treats I’d probably just not bother honestly, but you could do a little pot of bubbles, some stickers or a nice pencil or something if you really wanted to?

Id be a bit taken aback if someone did the story book thing in my daughter’s class - it’s just a bit much! And if it’s the works 10 for £10 we’ve had that at actual parties a few times and sorry to say the books are always a bit shit, badly written and irritating to read (I know they have some ‘proper’ books in that offer sometimes but honestly the ones we’ve ended up with have not been good.) I realise that sounds really churlish and ungrateful of me, sorry!

DeliciouslyBaked · 17/09/2025 19:51

Our school asks that each child brings a book (new or second hand) to donate to the school. The teacher reads it to everyone in class and then it goes in the school library with a sticker saying who donated it.

Completely normal at the two schools nearest to us, usually just haribo or mixed sweets, the type of thing given out on Halloween.

PeloMom · 17/09/2025 19:54

I agree with books.
in our nursery and then school DC wasn’t allowed to bring any food items due to allergies, intolerances and parent preferences.

🙄

What about the coeliac, diabetic and other ics?

Or they could put up and shut up.

TheCurious0range · 17/09/2025 19:55

DS' school have banned sweets for birthdays because of the healthy smile initiative.
The children tend to take stickers in just a couple of sheets and the birthday child gives one sticker to each child in the class. I think it's nice, no dietary issues to worry about no one upmanship of gifts, just stickers and the children choose something they like, DS had space cats last year
