School drop off C U next Tuesdays

ItsOnlyRainFFS · 17/09/2025 09:00

My primary school is right in the middle of a residential area. Loads of side road parking but for some reason a significant proportion of parents insist on trying to park right outside school gate. And when it rains it’s chaos! They will drive at 30mph, park across driveways, reverse right in the middle of the path crossings to obtain some holy grail parking space that saves them an extra 30 seconds walk. They are barely looking as they drive like lunatics to then drop their precious 5 year old outside the gate all the while risking hitting other kids. Year 5 and 6 are allowed to walk alone to school and I really get scared for them when I see this chaos. The biggest risk to these kids walking home alone is not some random stranger danger but bloody other parents driving!
I don’t get it!
AIBU to think these parents are total next level of C U next Tuesdays? And how the hell does anyone get them to stop being so selfish and reckless.
For info I work full time and regularly school run is a stress on top of work commute for me! I leave a couple mins early and account for parking a 1 min walk to school. It’s not exactly rocket science. I just don’t get the thought process that I need to park outside the school gate to hell with everyone else.

It is probably chaos around every school in the country to be honest. Your best option is to approach your council and suggest a survey regarding road safety during the times of school pick up and drop off…….i agree, it’s only a matter of time before a child gets injured or killed and that will be one child too many. Speak to the HT and get them on board too.
Why people cannot walk a short distance just amazes me…….i know the weather is often a factor but what price do we put on a child’s safety just because of a drop of bloody rain???

Not the schools who are part of the school street scheme

softlyfallsthesnow · 17/09/2025 16:03

On the plus side, I always know what time it is by the sudden, multi blaring horns in our road. How stupid do you have to be to sit in a gridlocked stationary car and think the fifteen cars in front of you will magically vanish if you press your annoying horn. Maybe don't drive into a suburban side street in the first place and instead, tell your strapping, secondary aged child to walk a few hundred yards.

I share the pain with all points made so far, especially the idling engines for up to an hour. Polite requests often met with abuse.
As a teacher, I've always said that parents would drive up the school steps and into the entrance hall if they could.

Our school is part of a school street scheme, and as I said upthread, it hasn't stopped the chaos, it has just pushed it into the streets immediately surrounding the school street area.

I supported the introduction of the school street, but personally I find it worse now because there is a lot of doglegging around previously quiet side streets/three point turning to avoid the cameras. When combined with people pavement parking and stopping at corners, it means that there are a lot of very dangerous junctions now where small children are stepping out between (illegally) parked vehicles just where lots of cars are suddenly turning. Also, it's now awful for everyone in all the streets around the school, not just for the street the school is actually on.

The drivers involved do not give a shit. They care about not having to walk 5 minutes extra more than they care about potentially injuring or killing their child's classmate.

LidlAmaretto · 17/09/2025 16:13

This happens at every school. It's ridiculous. I don't know why councils don't just get wardens to ticket them every single time until they stop. They would make their salary up in no time!

I asked our local councillor this question, and the answer is that parking wardens can't issue tickets to someone parked on a double yellow until they have given them 10 minutes grace. That is enough time for someone to take their child into school and back, so most people won't get a ticket and it's not worth the attendant's time then coming.

The only solution is to make the area a 'no loading' or a 'no stopping' zone as opposed to just a normal double yellow. But that costs councils money so they are slow and reluctant.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 17/09/2025 11:06

@Withthecorner That's absolutely horrifying. Was the child OK in the end?

Sadly, no. Life changing injuries.

Parking is just another sign of a selfish society who take a risk because it suits them, rather than keeping children safe.

KnottyKnitting · 17/09/2025 16:32

Yup total twats. But not new. My DDs are late 20s and it was the same when they were in primary school. One of mine was nearly brained by some entitled twat who not only parked on a corner, on a double yellow, on the pavement but also swung the door of her Chelsea tractor open with no consideration for the kids walking past and nearly knocked DD flying. When I had words she was totally unapologetic and quite indignant saying she had to get to work.

Next time I saw her, she was arguing with a traffic warden who had been called to the school after loads of complaints from neighbours near the school. Traffic warden wasn’t having any of it and wrote her a ticket. Sweet sweet karma!

Not intentionally trying to play devil's advocate but there is a status element to this. You might notice the most frequent offenders are parents who are senior on the School Association etc. It's largely about being seen and being seen in a position of importance. These parents also often use it for professional networking. I did it myself for years.

Not the case - at our school the biggest dick drivers are also the parents LEAST likely to ever chip in to help at PTA events etc, yet they always turn up to enjoy them with no thought for how the event actually is put on.

Just total selfish fuckwits in every way

Koolandorthegang · 17/09/2025 16:58

Yep. I live next to a school. There are jagged yellow lines clearly marked “do not park here” outside the school and double yellow lines too. The school is on a narrow bend with no visibility around the corner. Selfish arsehole parents ignore it all and park in these zones. It’s a secondary school too so I have no idea why their precious teenagers aren’t capable of walking a few minutes if they parked further away. I’ve often not been able to get by to get to my house because of these selfish cunts on more than one occasion. Give me strength!

To be fair i have seen that happen, but i have also seen it work very successfully

Horrendous. That poor child.

sgtmajormum · 17/09/2025 18:25

Live directly opposite the KS1 entrance to a primary. The insane parking I've seen over the years is next level. Some parents park up at 2.10 when the school doesn't finish until 3.05. Utter batshit madness.
They could park round the corner, a 2 min walk away but would rather park up for nearly an hour!

Chinsupmeloves · 17/09/2025 18:26

Unfortunately this seems to happen everyday IME. It's pathetic, lazy and dangerous. Double yellow lines, hazard warnings, don't mean a thing to them.

The first time I experienced it I was shocked and disgusted. Those who arrived early and just waited on the hazards, speeding idiots, parking double and over driveways etc.

When I didnt have to drop off early at BC I used to park nearby and walk DC.

It's crazy

Sadly so true

Speckly · 17/09/2025 18:39

I have special “You’ve parked like a cunt” stickers for this type of behaviour and enjoy slapping them on a side window 🤣 Bought them online and they were worth every penny! It’s incredible how entitled and lazy some people actually are!

lilkitten · 17/09/2025 18:45

Our school has a specific drop-off car park, better than most schools, but people will block people in, drive the wrong way round it, anything to make it quicker for themselves. I stop to let children cross at the islands nearby, but will get beeped by other parents for stopping (exactly the kind of drivers I'm trying to stop them getting hit by - it baffles me that they care for their own children but not for the safety of other children)

JustMeAndTheFish · 17/09/2025 19:01

What on earth is a CU next Tuesday? Weird.

Love this, if they’re big stickers I’d stick it right on the windscreen so they have to mess about peeling it off

LlynTegid · 17/09/2025 19:26

I would not use the words the OP did.

Unfit parents who endanger the lives of their children and others, who should be banned from driving for a very long time, if allowed to drive again at all. It is not the fault of the school.

Our local council has banned driving in the primary school street at drop off and collection times except for those living there

I haven't rtft but as someone who cycles with my ds, I agree that there are a lot of inconsiderate arseholes driving their children to school. It can be really scary!

Letskeepcalm · 17/09/2025 19:47

Newbutoldfather · 17/09/2025 09:04

And the Chelsea tractors who leave their engines running outside!

Hardly considerate of a school environment.

But so many will vote that you are right and continue to think that they are the exceptions to the rule.

I agree. A lot of people just don't see them selves as the problem
