Sulphur burps - is this normal?

lorrepa · 14/09/2025 21:08

Is it normal to get sulphur smelling burps two or three times a year for seemingly no reason.

I did eat very rich food yesterday. Some of it fried. I haven’t had food poisoning in decades. No one else is feeling off today. I’m devastated my one day to relax has been completely ruined

It's your gallbladder, aniseed gaviscon helps with the taste as does tonic water. See your GP for ultrasound

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 14/09/2025 21:10

I don't think sulphur burps are normal, except maybe if you've got a stomach upset.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 14/09/2025 21:11

Pepto Bismol will help with sulphur burps. I don’t think it’s normal though, I only get them if I have a stomach bug, but a friend of mine gets them with being on mounjaro.

NotItsyBitsyNorTeenyWeeny · 14/09/2025 21:11

Someone I know gets this on Mounjaro. So if you happen to be taking one of those sorts of weight loss drugs it could be that?

bridgetreilly · 14/09/2025 21:14

I don’t think it’s normal to feel that a day is ruined by having burps, nor to be devastated by that, no.

lorrepa · 14/09/2025 21:15

No not taking a glp 1 but I have lost around 50 pounds in the last year. My diet is all over the place as I try various ways of dieting. Plus I always feel like I’ve put my body under stress when I break my diet with a very heavy “cheat day”. But I was experiencing the opposite occasional bout of sulphur burps pre weight loss. They last a day and go

I had this recently after we had a slight tummy bug spread through the household.
Don't know if it's coincidence or not but I tried to reset my stomach microwhat ever they are called (brain fried and half asleep) , and had sour dough bread and yoghurt for the good bacteria and sulphur burps were gone by day 2. Its a sign all is not well and balanced.

Well each burp is catastrophic. I literally burp out the window as my poor hubby complained about the foul smell. it’s very unpleasant

If you have diarrhea too, you could have giardiasis. Which is horrible! Can lie dormant and go aware and then flare up again months later like you're describing so I'd contact gp if possible to rule this out as it won't go away without specific antibiotics. I caught this while travelling in Thailand, but wasn't unwell until we'd been home a while. The sulphur burps were absolutely disgusting, but the antibiotics got rid of the symptoms within 24 hours.

This could make sense. I shudder to think about the health of my digestive system. I’ve tried all sorts in the last year to lose weight. Fasting, keto, juicing etc.

Yep, gall bladder, more likely to get stones after weight loss and when leading a low fat diet suddenly I fluxes of fat set it off. I've had a bad weekend after a slice of pepperoni pizza and some crisps this week when I've recently lost 2 stone on slimming world.

I don’t have any other symptoms at all. No one else in my family does either. I made a roast last night but the chicken was over cooked if anything

If you've never experienced sulphur burps it's hard to explain how bad it is, it's like shitting from your mouth, it's really upsetting and stomach churning.

Tonic water and aniseed gaviscon are a kust

Putthekettleon73 · 14/09/2025 21:21

I think you should get it checked out as that sounds bacterial? but once you have and if there's nothing else going on then healing your gut sounds like a good idea. Sounds likes you've hammered your gut flora with lots of different extreme dieting. I would definitely see a GP to rule out anything more though.

Yup it’s truly that bad. I have to hold my breath for 15 seconds with every burp and rinse my mouth with mouthwash. Horrible!

Aniseed gaviscon masks the smell and taste brilliantly. Tonic water in between helps with that horrible feeling of having swallowed a brick. Seriously see your GP and ask for a gall bladder ultrasound.

Also those whose pals on mounjaro get it should do the same, any rapid weight loss massively increases risk of gallbladder disease

lorrepa · 14/09/2025 21:23

Thanks all you lovely people for talking this through with me. I’m a bit down as I don’t want to inflict myself on the rest of the family so have spent the day alone in my room

Send your husband out now for gaviscon and tonic water. I swear you quality of life will improve massively. I couldn't live without them in. Flare up.

I assumed nothing would help. Will get him to go out. Fingers crossed it will do the trick for me! Does it have to be the aniseed one? Thanks so much for your advice.

They are awful and I sympathise with you. I find taking a deep breath when you need a burp, then forcible exhale when you burp. Takes the taste away faster

cinders222 · 14/09/2025 21:58

Try peppermint capsules. I get them occasionally on Mounjaro and it decreases them and if do burp its peppermint which is more pleasant

Only the aniseed one works for me.

ToDamp0rNotToDamp · 14/09/2025 22:01

I had sulphurous burps mid-last year and turned out I had a gut infection! They came in waves, lasting for about a day. I’d speak to a GP just in case.

justasking111 · 14/09/2025 22:10

Dieting and gallbladder issues very common. Go see the GP. A scan is the best way to settle the question.

Would eating be a mistake? Just something plain like chicken and rice?
