To think most managers are insecure people hiding behind job titles?

The bigger the title, the more fragile the ego. AIBU to think management attracts people who need power to feel important?

The issue your post is hiding is that we are poor in the UK at supporting new managers do they can lead their teams constructively. Most organisations promote people into managerial positions because they're good at the technical aspects of a job. Understanding people, how to motivate them so things get done, how to balance support with autonomy, are complex and need to be taught.

This is the 3rd almost identical thread in the last few days.

Is there something you need to get off your chest OP?

This is actually my first post on the topic. Maybe you need to spend less time monitoring threads if you’re keeping count that closely?

There’s about one every 48 hours about ‘managers’ as some homogenous group of people.

Oh hello, random three words name poster with a really abstract 'discuss' thread. Why don't you share some of your own experiences that make you think this?

if this is your attitude i am assuming you never try for promotions to manager?

IMO there is very little training for most people who have to get promotions to management who then have responsibility for people as well as the work.

The best thing to do is to carry on being excellent at your job and help them grow into the role.

JaninaDuszejko · 14/09/2025 12:27

I would suggest that you need to move company to one that has a more supportive culture that develops good managers. Your experience is not my experience, I have had multiple managers over the years and only one was as poor at people management as you suggest all managers are. Most are decent people, but may have stronger skills in some areas than others.

FFS, I didn't notice. Fed up of the AI bots that are feeding off our posts.

Yabu!

Try being a manager! I did it for 2 and a half years in the NHS, I was incredibly supportive of my team but got no support for myself and eventually I buckled under the pressure and fell apart. I left and a year later I’m still trying to rebuild my confidence.

Uskie · 14/09/2025 12:30

I was promoted to a new position and now I have a very long title which I didn't choose...not sure how that makes me insecure!

Not sure about you, but I find counting to 3 really very simple.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 14/09/2025 12:32

Yanbu at all

Some managers are really good and normal

But far too many are very much office politics driven, and just make your life hard

Imissgoldengrahams · 14/09/2025 12:33

I have had really shit managers over the years. To the point I'd cry each shift, have anxiety about work to the extreme that it would leave me with stomach issues.
I vowed if I ever become a manager, I'd be the opposite of what I've had to experience.
I took a management course and I've been in my management role for two months, no complaints from any of my staff and we gel extremely well

OP name changes and then asks slightly provocative goady questions on all sorts of things. Not sure what he/she gets out of it but it's really boring.

It's almost as though they have their face pressed against the window, wanting to join in with the adults but never really sure how.

AbzMoz · 14/09/2025 12:38

I’ve had some brilliant managers. And some arseholes. I know to some people I’ve been a very good manager. To others, maybe less so (and they perhaps were less down my priority list than other responsibilities I had at the time).
At the end of the day - people are people. I’d like to think most are doing their best. If you don’t like the manager or company culture, leave.

Random three word username

Goady statement

"AIBU..." to end

There's so many of them now I can't decide if they're bots or Mumsnet posting for traffic. But they are so obvious and so annoying

You think it's the same person every time? Journalist content farming maybe?

Petrolitis · 14/09/2025 12:41

Managers aren't one homogeneous group OP.

What has caused you to think this way?

BallerinaRadio · 14/09/2025 12:41

Not even interesting enough. It definitely IS the same person (name structure) but I think they just like winding people up.

Shinyhappypeople43 · 14/09/2025 12:59

I'm a senior manager, because I'm very good at my job, so have had a few promotions.

Nothing insecure about me!

MermaidMummy06 · 14/09/2025 13:09

Like every job, it depends on the support & training you've had. I used to be an assistant manager & was well supported & my own manager was great for the same reason. Both of us knew our industry, roles & staff strengths well.

By contrast, I had time off with DC so am at the bottom in a different industry, small firm. Manager has been there 20 years & has zero training in being a manager. Plays favourites, ensures I don't get opportunities (has beef with my DH who works at the same firm) and has far too much power as she's made sure the boss relies on her heavily & support staff can't learn enough to advance. She's going to be in a world of trouble come January as her only knowledgeable staff member is going on mat leave (I doubt she'll come back). They've not considered the consequences of not developing team skills at all. I'm glad it's not my problem, and my lack of investment in my job, or hers, means I won't put myself out to help.

It comes down to the person, not the position.

SumUp · 14/09/2025 13:13

What a pointless OP. Managers are not a homogenous mass - they are individual people with different strengths, weaknesses, levels of training and support.

Didimum · 14/09/2025 13:14

Try harder, OP.
