Ex has left his cat behind

Don’t know what to do about cat that ex has dumped on me. Keeps saying he’s arranging transport but nothing happens. Already have a cat n a dog, and could do either out the extra one. She’s sweet but rarely comes in and is still nervous of my cat n dog. Ex is too far away to simply take her to his door. My adult children will probably think im wicked if we don’t keep her and I’d hate her to sit in a cage indefinitely waiting to be picked out by another new owner (she originally came from rescue). Keep her?

I would give him a date and then take her to a shelter and tell him to collect her there if you really can keep her. Hopefully that will motivate him to collect her.

murasaki · 13/09/2025 13:38

Congratulations on your new cat.

ParanoidGynodroid · 13/09/2025 13:46

Poor cat 😔

ShodAndShadySenators · 13/09/2025 13:49

If you want to keep her and can manage your own animals' expectations, then why not. It sounds like you don't really want another and are overly concerned with what your offspring will say. Are they planning on taking on the cat's care? If they aren't, stop giving a stuff what they think. You already know your ex has just dumped the cat and has no intention of actually doing anything about it, so your options are to rehome, take to a shelter or take her in yourself.

Your ex is a crapbag, you're well rid.

I had friends who did this, but with a dog. Neither wanted it as it was no longer a puppy. A family member ended up taking it on.

If you can't keep the cat and he doesn't take it back are there any family or friends who would take it? Please don't take it to a rescue (I appreciate you haven't mentioned doing so) they seem totally inundated at the moment.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 13:51

poor Little bobs 🥲

Congratulations on your new cat.

Agree, id just keep her tbh

Yabu not to provide us with a photo 🥰

winteralready25 · 13/09/2025 13:54

Give him a deadline, he's a CF.

If any of your adult kids think you're cruel not to keep a cat that isn't yours and that you don't want, can they take it? If they live at home still they could move out and take it with them.

Catpiece · 13/09/2025 13:59

You need to pay cat tax please x

Rallentanda · 13/09/2025 13:59

It's not really a happy life for a cat if they're too uncomfortable to come in. Rehoming would be kinder surely?

ChoccieCornflake · 13/09/2025 14:01

Depending on where you are, rescue places are either full or have waiting lists that are weeks or even months long. Thank you for caring for her.

K0OLA1D · 13/09/2025 14:03

Well I'd just keep the cat. Id be worried he wouldn't look after her

Costcogroupie · 13/09/2025 14:06

Give the cat away to a good home, if ex wants it back tell him the cat ran off and you haven't seen it for months.

CopperWhite · 13/09/2025 14:10

The cat doesn’t want to be in your house because of your other pets, so it would be better off elsewhere.

CinnamonBuns67 · 13/09/2025 14:11

If shes unhappy with your existing pets then it'd be unkind to keep her. I'd rehome the cat if ex doesn't have it sorted by a certain date. Just make sure she goes somewhere good, don't advertise her for free or cheap as that will attract animal abusers/people that get cats to use as baiting for dog fights.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 13/09/2025 14:27

Which rescue did the cat come from? Would they rehome it?

ForNoisyCat · 13/09/2025 16:52

Thanks all. I’ll see if DS is interested, then give ex a deadline. Failing that I’ll phone cat protection league for their view. Piccy to follow when I work out how to attach it

I wouldn’t be able to give the cat up, but I would convince him that I would take it to his workplace/mums/a rescue place if he doesn’t collect it by x date.

Just be clear, I wouldn’t actually carry out the threat, I would just hope it might spur him into action.

bestcatlife · 13/09/2025 16:59

Oh she's a beauty

YelloDaisy · 13/09/2025 17:04

I wouldn’t let DCs dictate or anyone else who doesn’t intend to look after it themselves.
I live in the countryside so you sort of know who local people are-I’d put a notice in the church/shop asking if anyone would like it. There’s plenty of ways to get a cat for dog baiting without scanning the local ads / notices.

ComfortFoodCafe · 13/09/2025 17:10

Youll be lucky if a rescue agree, they are full. Why cant you keep it?

Prancingponies · 13/09/2025 17:19

My livery yard recently closed down and they asked us to rehome (admittedly a livery adopted) barn cat. Lets just say putting a post on a facebook group brought only cranks calling up.

As it happens I have a double garage, installed a cat flap and now she's happily living in there. Do you have a shed or something she could call her own?
Admittedly Lucy our ex barn cat has a heated pad now nights are getting colder!
And yes, she has the most amazing eyes.

She's a beautiful cat . I don't think you will have long before someone took her @ForNoisyCat

ForNoisyCat · 13/09/2025 17:24
