Ex has left his cat behind

ForNoisyCat · 13/09/2025 13:32

Don’t know what to do about cat that ex has dumped on me. Keeps saying he’s arranging transport but nothing happens. Already have a cat n a dog, and could do either out the extra one. She’s sweet but rarely comes in and is still nervous of my cat n dog. Ex is too far away to simply take her to his door. My adult children will probably think im wicked if we don’t keep her and I’d hate her to sit in a cage indefinitely waiting to be picked out by another new owner (she originally came from rescue). Keep her?

If it doesn't work out, call the original rescue if you know who it was. When we rescued our boy from Cats Protection, there was a clause in the adoption papers about only rehoming him through them, so if similar they may take her back.

sick joke presumably? Dog bait!??

No, sadly it's true

Lovely that she curled up with you. She is adjusting to her new home.

Could you get her an outdoor cat house, so she has somewhere dry /warm to go to during the day?

Ah yes, I didn’t think about that. My old cat had one years ago but never used it! I’ll try n get another. Thanks

Honestly she doesn't sound like she is causing you lots of trouble. Lots of cats like being outside - we used to rarely see ours in the summer. They would pop in for dinner then straight off out again. You can make her somewhere in the garden that's warm to sleep if she's adamant she doesn't want to come in, but when the colder weather hits she will probably get over any issues with your dog and cat. As long as there are no major issues between them all I would keep her - you where happy for her to live there when your ex was there 😊

DangerousAlchemy · 14/09/2025 11:18

Idinnaenah · 13/09/2025 13:33

I would give him a date and then take her to a shelter and tell him to collect her there if you really can keep her. Hopefully that will motivate him to collect her.

That's terrible advice! He should get in touch with the original rescue as he will have signed a contract saying the cat will be returned to them if for any reason he can no longer keep her. Rescues she full to the brim at the moment! Depending on her age sge may well sit in a cafe/run for months waiting for a new home if they even have space yo take her in the 1st place.

FiveShelties · 14/09/2025 11:37

Wow, she is gorgeous.

Sassylovesbooks · 14/09/2025 11:43

How long has your ex had the cat? Often, if they came from a particular rescue, at adoption, a contract is signed saying 'if you can no longer care for the animal, then it must go back to the rescue adopted from'. Obviously, this isn't always possible. Do you know which rescue the cat originally came from? How long has the cat being living in your home? The cat clearly is too nervous of your own cat and dog, to come inside the house. Were all the animals introduced slowly? Or was it a case of letting this little one loose with the others, and hoping for the best? It's no life for a cat, living outside out of nervousness and fear. Some cats are simply not suited to living with another cat and unless grown up together most cats are fearful of dogs. Unfortunately, rescues are full to the brim but you need to find out if there are any local independent rescues in your area (not just the Cats Protection or RSPCA). Don't advertise the cat on Facebook etc, you don't know who will respond. Often cats are obtained in this way, to be used as bait in dog fighting rings.

Very good of you to keep her OP. Easy for a lot of posters here to advise you to ‘just keep her’ but food, insurance and routine treatments all add up, there’s no ‘just’ about it.

Thelnebriati · 14/09/2025 12:33

If she came from a legit rescue they are her legal owner, you can return her to them. Its against the law to abandon an animal, so your other option is the RSPCA.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/09/2025 13:53

Agree, id just keep her tbh

Yabu not to provide us with a photo 🥰

The cat distribution system in action... 😂🐾😻

Noodles1234 · 14/09/2025 12:50

Poor cat, taken on by your ex with no long term plan. Now with a home that can’t / won’t have her. Not your fault but it’s just sad. Did you accept her before and now he has gone ?

ginasevern · 14/09/2025 13:38

Costcogroupie · 13/09/2025 14:06

Give the cat away to a good home, if ex wants it back tell him the cat ran off and you haven't seen it for months.

God no. Never just give an animal away, or advertise on FB. Animal abusers look for "free to a good home" adds all the time so they can torture and make videos. People also get them for dog baiting - amongst many other horrific things. Always rehome an animal through a registered shelter or charity or give it to a trusted and very well known family member.

Calm down, I said give it to a GOOD home.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 14/09/2025 16:38

Keep her 😻
it may take a time. It she will get used to your dog and cat. Just introduce them slowly and she will be fine

Aww, she's gorgeous 😍 💕

Sharptonguedwoman · 14/09/2025 18:43

OP please can you check if she's spayed? Apologies if I missed it if you said. Kittens in the mix might not be on your Christmas list.

PotatoLove · 14/09/2025 18:45

Thank you for keeping her OP. She's gorgeous. I'm sure she'll settle after a while.

Try to get an outdoor cat home for her if you can.

Overtheatlantic · 14/09/2025 18:52

She’s beautiful! Just to note that this is the time of year to start keeping your black cats close to home. And some shelters pause adoption of them closer to Halloween. 🐈‍⬛😻

In the freezing winter?

Olderbutt · 14/09/2025 19:10

Keep the poor Kitty 😺 and claim maintenance payments!

tripleginandtonic · 14/09/2025 19:14

Keep her if you can, given you already have pets.

schtompy · 14/09/2025 19:35

Either keep her or return her to the rescue she came from, explaining what has happened. Obv inform him.

I had an outdoor cat house years ago that the old cat didn’t use! I’ll get a new one and give it ago. Thanks for the tip.
