So what’s going on with all these flags around ?

I hadn’t really noticed it until I went to see a friend who lives 30 minutes away and the flags were everywhere there but not in my area.

Then today I saw someone with a Union Jack flag hanging from their car window, like is usually done during the World Cup.

whats going on ? I have seen a few posts on social media it, but not really explaining what’s happening and why people are putting flags up all over the place.

OP posts:

My council wrote to me to ask if a flag could be flown on my home for VJ Day(live on a busy road and the posts are attached to a lot of the houses for flags, Xmas trees etc). I agreed. The flags are all still up, I suspect the council are wary to take them down because our local social media tend to bang on at anything they do. I’m emailing to ask for it to be removed

We’re turning into ‘Merica! 🇺🇸

@omj look up the ‘campaign’ Raise The Colours. That will answer your question as to why suddenly there are loads of flags.

LancashireButterPie · 13/09/2025 10:17

In a few months they'll be in tatters.
In our village some idiot badly painted a St George's flag on our war memorial, it looked awful.
Then some antifascist painted over it with graffiti. So effectively, between them these people have ruined our lovely memorial.

noblegiraffe · 13/09/2025 10:22

Tommy Robinson and his merry band of racists are marching in London today. He's been whipping up the flag stuff.

Underthinker · 13/09/2025 10:30

The people raising the flags will feel that you cant raise an English or Union flag anymore without being called racist.

Stop making them right.

Serpentstooth · 13/09/2025 10:30

Jingoism not patriotism. Dont let the fascist right hijack and distort everything, symbols and language. Eff em.

Perhaps the people raising the flags should stop doing and saying racist things and proving those people right?

I hope you're not generalising about a whole group of people from a couple of bad apples. There's a word for that.

It’s not a couple of bad apples though is it? I’ve never seen a comment from a single one of them that wasn’t terribly racist. Their entire campaign is racist!

No, however the motivation behind the current raising of flags isn't an outpouring of patriotism but is part of a movement to 'take back our country'.

If you haven't noticed what's behind Operation 'Raise the Colours' then perhaps more research is needed.

Whatever the motivation of the organisers, lots of ordinary non racist people do support it out of patriotism, its a massive own goal to vilify these people.

I agree.

And ask yourself why when you see people fly flags from other countries that’s ok , in fact you think quite touching that people are still connected to their heritage, and they must be very multi cultural and tolerant people… but when people fly English or Union flags you instantly think “Racist” and “thick”

Far right racists claiming to be patriots. Wife beaters and sex offendors claiming to be "protecting our women and children". Thugs pretending to have legitimate concerns.

TizerorFizz · 13/09/2025 11:15

Rugby World Cup? Who’s watching that? It’s asserting the flag. It’s designed to provoke. It’s not seen in well to do areas.

Not anyone who flies the flag. The current ones painting them on roundabouts cheered on by Tommy Robinson.

If they blindly support it without educating themselves about the aims of the campaign they deserve to be called thick. Nobody with half a brain would lend support to a campaign they knew nothing about.

Because other countries don’t fly their flag as a hallmark for racist EDL campaigns.

Sorry, but..... have you been living under a rock or on Mars?! 😁
Or are you just trying to get more people talking and arguing about them? (Been here too long and get cynical 👀😁)
As there's been loads of flag threads, just search for one. Also all over social media.

Even the Hope not Hate website acknowledges flying flags isn't racist & many of the recent flags are raised by ordinary people unconnected to any larger group.

When you make blanket statements about being thick and racist, you will inevitably be needlessly insulting many, and turning them away from the kind of politics you'd prefer them to support and vote for. From their point of view, you have been wrong about them being unintelligent and wrong about them being racist (because very few people see themselves as such), and therefore you are very likely to be wrong about your wider political viewpoint. They may conclude, quite reasonably, that people on the left are dicks.

You seem to be glossing over their conclusion
"Again, there is nothing wrong with raising the Union Jack or cross of St George. Despite what people claim on social media, it’s not illegal to be proud to be English or British! It’s also true that not everyone who has raised a flag is far right. But the fact that much of this wave of activism is being organised by well-known racists and extremists does raise questions about the motivations behind much of Operation Raise the Colours."
