I mean technically if you live until you’re 80 then the middle of your life is 40

MiniCoopers · 11/09/2025 20:12

What a ridiculous AI bot statement. 30 is clearly not middle age. Prat

Oh god 😂 I have a 31 year old i will let her know !

AgnesX · 11/09/2025 20:15

Not remotely. Middle age starts at 50. Although that said I'm not sure I'll make it to 100!

Zov · 11/09/2025 20:17

🙄

Only someone who is about 10 would think this. Does everyone die at 60? No. The average lifespan in the free world is 80-82, so middle age can not be less than 40.

Daft.

SoOriginal · 11/09/2025 20:20

no I don’t think so. I’ve always though of it in quarters…
20 childhood / education
20 - 40 young adulthood
40 - 60 middle aged
60 - 80 old age

If middle age starts at 30 then when would old aged start? You’d be ‘middle aged’ for far to long for it to have any meaning.

There’s no number on middle age; it’s the range between being young and being a pensioner. Personally, I’d say about 35/40 - 65 is middle aged; past the angst of youth, probably settled, not ready to retire.

In medical culture the life stages are as follows:

0ish = neonate
0-17 = paediatric
18-49 = very young
49-79 = young
80+ = old, but it also depends

I like that so I'm planning to be young until I'm at least 79.

Realistically, middle age is a little different for everyone but in my mind begins somewhere between 40-45 and becomes old age as early as 60 but often not until 70ish. The end of middle age / beginning of old is the time when even people who find themselves in good health just start to feel old and tired, and can't manage their old responsibilities as they used to. Entering middle age, I think has mostly to do with leaving behind a youthful appearance and also having left one's reproductive prime. And also relates to the middle of adult life (not the middle of the whole life), which doesn't begin until around 18-21 these days.

Famous 30 year olds

Logan Paul
Melanie Martinez
Haley Lu Richardson
Megan Thee Stallion
Troye Sivan
Dua Lipa
Gigi Hadid

I struggle to place these people in the Middle Aged bracket just yet. Maybe I'm just old.

Medical Culture says this??? Confused

On what planet are you 'young' in your 70s though? Confused (Or your 60s for that matter!) Even when you're in your 50s, you're not young. And 49 is not 'very young!' 😆

Haha it's just referencing as a foundation doctor I might come home to my husband and recall some sad tale of someone who's terribly ill or died whilst only "young" and my husband would say "how old are they though?" And my answer would often be something like "75". He would react as you have! The perception of age is skewed in adult hospital medicine by such a large number of inpatients being in their 80s and 90s and so few being below middle age.

There's also I think, a fair proportion of pretty robust 70 something's, still physically strong and active, in a way not too dissimilar to a person in their 50s. After 80 though it's rare to meet a person who does not seem old and frail, functionally limited to some extent by age alone, even if they have no specific health conditions.

ZenNudist · 11/09/2025 20:48

I'm 46 and middle aged since 35. No guarantee I will get to 70 let alone older. I don't personally see what is so bad about being middle aged. It's the land between young and old. Being middle aged rules!

Half way though life expectancy is middle aged. Pretty simple. Old after that. Then elderly.

But the old people don’t like to hear that. 🤫

Well, yes, but life expectancy sits around 80, so 30 is nowhere near middle aged!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 11/09/2025 21:01

I'm mid 40's and I'm young (until about 9:30pm.. then I am very old)

IAmQuiteNiceActually · 11/09/2025 21:23

The term 'middle aged' tends to be used scathingly by younger people. That's why we don't like it....it's not because we're desperate to be young again. I don't understand why we're placed into these groups...I have friends ranging in age from early forties to mid seventies (I'm 52).

I'm glad to be this age because I feel I've had many advantages that younger people haven't had, like being able to buy a house and benefiting from the huge increase in property prices. Being able to be a SAHM because tax credits allowed it. If I had to rewind back to 30 I'd be in big trouble.

CharmCharmCharm · 11/09/2025 21:24

If you’re only planning to live until 60 years old then I suppose it is.

IAmQuiteNiceActually · 11/09/2025 21:30

It did post!!!!!

MyDogHumpsThings · 11/09/2025 21:32

I’m 40 and I don’t care what my life expectancy is, I won’t be middle aged until I’m 75. At least. I’m practically a foetus!

IAmQuiteNiceActually · 11/09/2025 21:32

FFS there's meant to be a wink emoji in there somewhere!

Ihateslugs · 11/09/2025 21:36

I think someone in their 30s is still young, they’ve got years ahead of them! As many professional couple leave having children until they are mid to late 30s, they seem even younger, unlike me who by the time I was 35, my children were 15 and I felt middle aged! My daughter, first time mum at 38, focused on her career in her 20s and only met her partner when she was around 35, she still acts like a young mum enjoying life.
