Personally I do

Middle age is a pejorative term because
youth is the ideal.
To me a women’s middle age is biological. Stuff falls of a cliff for us.
Men’s middle age is psychological.

JetFlight · 11/09/2025 19:14

Well we all have a personal middle age and just don’t know it. Maybe yours is 30, someone else’s is 5O and some 23. Who knows.

Half way though life expectancy is middle aged. Pretty simple. Old after that. Then elderly.

But the old people don’t like to hear that. 🤫

But the old people don’t like to hear that

You make it sound as if "old people" are a race apart! That some people were born as " old people."

You do realise it comes to us all? Or at least all of us who don't have the misfortune to die young.

I honestly can't believe the madness on MN recently: people calling full stops passive aggressive, women being upset because they think their children aren't beautiful and now people talking about middle age at 30. Really feels like the lunatics are running the asylum.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 11/09/2025 19:15

Sounds like the OP is 'thinking herself old' as my father puts it.

I have a top tip. The way to always think of yourself as young is to marry someone a couple of decades older than you. I'm 52 and consider myself to be barely out of my teens. #lifehacks

Edited

Well when you get 60 / 70 year olds saying they are not old it’s clear old people don’t like to be called old.

Ellmau · 11/09/2025 19:18

I thought that 40 was middle aged ... when I was 10. My DM was not impressed :)

ShesTheAlbatross · 11/09/2025 18:59

Well if life expectancy is 80, then 40 would be the middle. So for a range to be considered “middle aged” you could argue 35-45, or 30-50 I guess.

I do think it’s silly when people try to say that middle age doesn’t start until you’re in your 50s.

Definitely agree with this.

If you break life down into stages,
0-1 baby
2-3 toddler
4-10 child
11-12 tweeen
13-18ish teens
19-22ish young adult
23-30ish adult
31-45ish middle age
late 40s/50-late 60s old
70 & up elderly

CraftyGin · 11/09/2025 19:19

No way! If you can procreate, you are young.

I am 60 and still middle-aged.

You're going to live to 120?

Justagirl95 · 11/09/2025 19:20

Nah. Anything over 18 is over the hill 🙄

bellinisurge · 11/09/2025 19:21

😂😂😂😂

TeenToTwenties · 11/09/2025 19:21

Middle age is 40-60 ish.
Elderly is 80+

But life expectancy is early 80s. So middle age is 40s by your measure.

Musicaltheatremum · 11/09/2025 19:23

My daughter is 32! I told her last week she wasn't old enough to be going through Schiphol airport by herself and she laughed. Definitely not middle aged. Maybe another 10-12 years.

Bam888 · 11/09/2025 18:57

I guess it depends how hard you hit your 20s..

Bringmeahigherlove · 11/09/2025 19:24

Who cares? I don’t understand the obsession with age. Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets to do.

Newsenmum · 11/09/2025 19:24

35-55 is mid life

MiddleAgeRageMonster · 11/09/2025 19:25

My mum died at 68, so she was unknowingly middle aged at 34.
If I died now at 42 I was middle aged at 21...
It's a pretty irrelevant concept really but as a generalisation, assuming the average life expectancy is somewhere in the 80's middle aged is somewhere in our 40's.

cattykinns · 11/09/2025 19:25

Yea it’s ancient. Gross!

Haveanaiceday · 11/09/2025 19:25

Middle age has generally been thought of as starting at about 40 and going up to late 50s, but with people living longer, healthier lives on average if anything it would be older. Or perhaps we should do it in Witch stages, Maiden, Mother and Crone. A lot of us on here are in the Peri Crone stage, apparently.

This!! I had a lively debate on here a while back with someone who was 60 who said they were middle aged and not yet ‘older’. It’s hard pill for some people to swallow it seems.

GiraffesAtThePark · 11/09/2025 19:25

I don’t think it matters. I normally thought of it as starting at 40. If anything we try to appear younger so I don’t think many 30 somethings are considered middle age. I remember reading My Cousin Rachel and she refers to herself as middle age at 35, but then that book is old so I thought it’d changed over time.

You start being an adult at 30ish, nowadays.

QueenClinomania · 11/09/2025 19:28

🤣🤣
No, pet. 30 is not middle aged.

Although when I was a child, people in their 30s seemed ancient too!

I'm in my 50s and consider myself middle aged.
