Awful new neighbours are making me want to cry

Honestly this is just a rant and I will prefix this with I’m not entirely clear whether or not they really ARE our new neighbours. The previous owners moved out in April but the house is not showing as sold and these people have been coming and going, not staying there every night, and recently disappeared for about 5 weeks. There are multiple different cars that get parked on the drive and it’s all a bit confusing.

But the woman is just awful. She has a large dog in a tiny house which barks constantly and then shouts at it to stop barking. One night over the summer she just left it in the garden to bark its head off while she was doing something out front. She has also put a large “beware of the dog” sign on her front door which I think lowers the tone of the area.

But more than anything she is so LOUD. She is two doors down and I can hear her entire conversations and arguments on the phone. When she’s not on the phone, just stands in her garden and shouts!

I want to move next year and I’m so worried she is going to be off putting to prospective buyers. Our old neighbours were so quiet I feel so cross with them for selling to this awful, loud and inconsiderate woman.

so what have they actually done?

Notinmylifethyme · 09/09/2025 12:49

Can only suggest you sell up in winter when she's not in the garden!!

Motnight · 09/09/2025 12:50

This must be a windup post.

AgnesX · 09/09/2025 12:51

It's irritating but be grateful they're not right next door, and keep your fingers crossed they're only passing through.

PollyBell · 09/09/2025 12:52

The noise, shouting and dog i get but no idea why the rest matters

GoldDuster · 09/09/2025 12:52

You need to move house OP, there is nothing else to be done about tone lowering.

MiddleAgeRageMonster · 09/09/2025 12:52

Love the sign 'lowering the tone'.
I don't think this can be real, surely no one is this delicate.

Ilikewinter · 09/09/2025 12:53

Well I did feel sorry for you until you said the 'beware of the dog' sign lowers the tone of the area !!! .... and she's not your neighbour but lives 2 doors away - just put your house up for sale and move.

helenmelonmoon · 09/09/2025 13:04

If you move, you may end up living next to someone a lot worse. As a dog owner, I can say that when I first moved into my house my dog did bark. Everything is new and strange for them. Hopefully after a while, the dog will calm down. Mine doesn’t bark at all now.
Some people are just loud and some are totally unaware they are loud. Especially if your street is very quiet. It will soon be getting very cold and hopefully she will stay inside a bit more.

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/09/2025 13:07

Oh dear, sell up quick and move to the countryside.

Lower the tone of the neighbourhood 😆

Dappy777 · 09/09/2025 13:31

I really, really sympathize OP. I hate noise, and live in fear of a violent, noisy person moving in next door. The people opposite are planning to sell up and I'm already worrying. I don't really have any advice. All I can do is assure you you're not alone. If it was up to me, there would be very strict noise laws. We have a problem with noisy cars. For some inexplicable reason, people now modify their exhausts so they crackle and bang and explode. I mean why?!😡 If you work hard and love cars, then great. Spend your money on a nice car and enjoy it. But why do you have to make that horrendous noise? They must get pleasure out of knowing they are upsetting people. The noise goes right through the house. It even wakes me up at night. Do I need to add that the police are useless? Of course I don't.

This is a small, overcrowded island. We're so densely populated that everyone is jammed on top of one another. And it also means the houses and flats are very small and closely packed. We ought to have the strictest noise pollution laws in the world. That kind of behaviour ruins lives. I have known two people driven to suicide attempts by the noisy, anti-social scumbags who moved in next door. (These people lived in different parts of the country btw.)

As others have said, you could go through all the hassle of moving and find yourself next to someone even worse.

DonnaBanana · 09/09/2025 13:36

This is why I’d rather live in the most run down detached house in the arse end of town than even a nice terrace or semi. Nothing worse than sharing space with neighbours.

Twinklewonderkins · 09/09/2025 14:00

Oof not TONE LOWERING!

FishNChipsandScrapsSaltNVinegarToo · 09/09/2025 14:10

You think that’s bad? Trying living next door to neighbours who smoke cannabis and the smell stinking out your home and they don’t give a shit! Try living next door to neighbours slamming doors and stomping up and down the stairs all the fucking time. Then you have something to fret about.

Tortielady · 09/09/2025 14:51

I haven't voted because I can't say you're unreasonable for having your nerves shredded by loud people. I have pretty much the same response. But here's the thing. I know people (including family members) whose voices carry. They don't mean to be loud, they just are - sometimes it's because they lived or worked in loud, noisy places and the habit of moderating their volume didn't take. The coupling of volume and violence doesn't always apply - a lot of loud people are big softies who'd never raise a hand to anyone.

Also, quiet people aren't always peaceable and gentle. Hannibal Lecter is a perfect example of a soft-spoken monster, but people like him weren't created by Hollywood. As much as noisy neighbours annoy me at least you know where you are with them.

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/09/2025 14:58

She’s two doors down, imagine the poor bastard that’s right next door to her.

Letsgoroundagainnow · 09/09/2025 15:10

How is the sign “lowering the tone”?

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 09/09/2025 15:10

People like this moved into our street. It turned out to be a cannabis farm. The dog was to put off nosy neighbours. Any pungent smells, or dodgy buzzing noises? Cables to the street wiring? Blinds or nets at all the windows?

Do you not think it’s possible for certain people to lower the tone of a neighbourhood…..I have certainly come across some who could!

Motnight · 09/09/2025 17:11

Someone2025 · 09/09/2025 15:45

Why?

The sign lowering the tone.

Tontostitis · 09/09/2025 17:15

I had a man like this move in one garden over behind me and he made Very Important and very loud work calls all afternoon. I started joining in and he soon found somewhere else to go.

Naws · 09/09/2025 17:15

Well someone must know if they've bought the house or they're renting?

Did no-one welcome them when they moved in and strike up a friendly conversation?

Naws · 09/09/2025 17:18

Also, admitting she knows her dog may be dangerous isn't really the wisest move.

Other than that I can't see how it 'lowers the tone'.
