Currently training with a PT 3 times a week, costing £100 a month. LOVING it.

Lately, I have been attending other classes the PT is running, I assumed the classes were either free (part of the gym cost) or inc with the £100 a month. I was wrong, they are £100 a month, on top of the £100 I am already paying.

I LOVE the classes and the PT sessions. It is the only way I will lose the weight/train/keep me on track. BUT £200 a month is a HELL of a lot for me to pay out for when we have so much else we need to be paying for. I can pay for the PT session without the classes.

Without the PT I would not train. I am overweight and EXTREMELY unhappy with the way I look and have been for some time now. I used to be very slim.

What to do ? the £200 every month is VERY tight for my budget and I feel guilty paying all that money when there is a need for money to be put towards other things BUT I am LOVING the daily classes and the PT sessions.

I have started the classes and don't feel I can now duck out (and don't want to) of them long term.

Thoughts ?

That’s an incredible amount of money how about you tube workouts?

AnchorWHAT · 08/09/2025 11:09

Is there no where else local that offers classes cheaper? That is a lot, i pay £35 a month for my local leisure centre and can book in as many classes as i want for that price, its an everyone active centre.

TooManyBooksUnread · 08/09/2025 11:10

That is a lot of money. Do you really need the PT so often? Can she or he give you workouts and catch up once a week?

nomchonge1 · 08/09/2025 11:13

can you cut costs somewhere else in the month? do you spend money eating out, takeaways, coffees, or anyting else that isnt essential? I would start there and see if you could stretch the extra for the classes. Otherwise keep the PT if its the only way to get you to exercise. Health is worth the investment..

Ryeman · 08/09/2025 11:13

It's a lot of money but I don't think you can put a price on your health. Are you making savings in other areas now that you're spending so much time at the gym? Think about offsetting that. 3 times a week with a PT is a lot, but I know what you mean about needing that motivation. Can you cut down to once or twice a week once you know what you're doing? They will be able to write a programme for you. (also maybe try posting in the Exercise group if you want additional feedback)

Calamitousness · 08/09/2025 11:14

That’s incredibly cheap for the amount of PT sessions etc.
prioritise you and commit to it. £200 is reasonable. Yes it’s a lot of money but not for what you are getting. My PT is £35 each session. So I would be £105 per week gym alone if I was you. I only have one session with mine per week though and other sessions I do alone.

Stichintime · 08/09/2025 11:16

The PT sounds incredibly cheep! For classes I'd shop around, but a £100 a month sounds reasonable.

QPZM · 08/09/2025 11:17

You say 'we' have so much else 'we' need to be paying for?

But you haven't told us who that person is and if they're ok with it/how they might be affected.

That's more important than what MNetters think.

This. Can you cover it yourself and still make your usual contribution to household bills etc? If not, that's the conversation you need to be having first.

booohoooloo · 08/09/2025 11:30

we have a shared bank account for everything. we can still pay our bills etc if I pay the £200 BUT we will effectively be short by tthis amount. Not too short that we cannot live day-to-day. Just £200 down on what we would usually have. I will cut back, but there is only so much I can cut back by

Edited

But what has that person said about it?

Are they happy to be short while you're spending so much money on yourself?

What if they wanted to spend the same amount on their self?

brunettemic · 08/09/2025 11:34

So in the usual MN vein of things…does your DP also get to not contribute £200 (currently, or planning to), this making you collectively £400 short? If so, then it’s fine. It’s all about the overall impact and what the impact of being short of that money is.

I think those classes are hugely expensive, the PT I’ve no idea as I’ve never been to one.

wandererofthekingdom · 08/09/2025 11:37

I think you're getting great value. If I saw my PT 3 times a week it would be costing me £408 a month and that's without the additional classes.
I'm sure you must be getting more out of the 121 sessions, so drop the classes if you need to. You will be able to stay on track without them. Check out youtube, I'd recommend Caroline Girvan on there.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/09/2025 11:38

Yes that’s very cheap for a pt.

are there any classes that are included in the gym price?

BloodyHellBob · 08/09/2025 11:40

£100 per month for roughly 12 sessions with a PT is peanuts! My PT is great and has kept her costs low and she’s £20 per 1-2-1 session. So I think the PT for you is a bargain. As for the other classes, can you join a gym that’s a bit more reasonable and includes classes in the membership cost? @booohoooloo

annonymousse · 08/09/2025 11:45

Came to say the same as @Calamitousness My PT is £35/session and I go twice a week. My gym membership is separate but incudes classes which I do twice a week also. Even so my outlay each month is more than £200. I see it as an investment in myself and my future health. I was overweight and have lost just over 3 stone since beginning of February. I'm stronger and slimmer than I've been for years. I feel it's worth the money spent.

Mauvehoodie · 08/09/2025 11:51

Huge well done! Can you do a certain period of the classes, say 2 months to motivate yourself initially and then just carry on with the PT sessions and try and do the gym or Youtube like others have said if you want to do more. I'd say in general, investing in your health is so important AND you sound like you're enjoying it so if you can find a way to afford the £200 a month, it seems like a really good place to spend the money.

DiscoBob · 08/09/2025 11:52

You don't sound like you want to quit either of them so just reduce the amount of sessions/classes per week.

£100 a month for three PT sessions a week is really cheap. Most PTs I know of charge about £40-60 p/h.

Sometimes work out alone or with friends in the park gym or at home using exercises your PT has given you. Something like HIIT. You can watch YouTube videos. I'm sure the PT can tailor it so you're able to do more exercise independently.

It's great you're so into it. Some people might spend £200 a month or more on WLI or even get surgery in a bid to lose weight. So in a way it's better spending it on healthy exercise.

booohoooloo · 08/09/2025 11:54

the classes are PT style classes ie a group of 4 or 5, very tailored to individual needs, very focused on individuals as we work. They are not just an exercise class with 20+ people in them

Glunkyboot · 08/09/2025 11:57

I want to do this but I can’t justify the cost so I have no choice but to force myself to do this by myself (work out/keep fit). Generally speaking I do keep up with it but not as much as if I had a PT and I expect my progress is slower but I accept this as a trade off. I am motivated to keep going by the results I have had so far, plus I like knowing it saves money. I am perhaps an anomaly as I am self motivated to do it. I also think £100 is cheap for a PT 3 x a week. I would pay for that but not £100 for the gym part.

booohoooloo · 08/09/2025 11:58

I was in a HUGE slump - lethargic, no energy, no 'get up & go', no focus, struggling to get out of bed, eating anything and everything, These classes/sessions have given me back my energy and bounce and have been a GOD SEND so far.. but at a cost

Caroparo52 · 08/09/2025 11:59

Can you join your local council gym and get a training plan personalised for yourself. Then uddate the plan monthly. Should be included in your membership. Our gym is fantastic with classes and swims and gym use all included in monthly fee. I understand what you say about needing the one to one to Do it. But when I walk in the door I feel that incentive right there. £200 is a lot of money

WaltzingWaters · 08/09/2025 12:03

It’s an awful lot to spend each month. But if it’s going to get you in shape/healthy size in a way that you enjoy and stick to, and you’re both happy with where that money is spent, it is money well spent. If it’s going to is over budget, then could you stick with the PT sessions and join a gym/leisure centre that offers unlimited classes and gym for a lot less than that? Our local leisure centre is around £35 per month for either unlimited swimming or gym and classes.

Yes but

The other person you share your finances with?

You still haven't told us about them and how/if it would affect them?

What is their opinion?

LadyQuackBeth · 08/09/2025 12:17

I think it's both a lot of money and also extremely good value, think how many hours you are getting for £200 and all the benefits.

If keep it up for a couple of months and once you start reaching targets phase out a couple of things and start doing them yourself. It's not £200 forevermore, but for the next few months it's more than worth it.
