Should I be worried about our dog getting neutered tomorrow

Hi everyone we have a 2 year old dog who is getting neutered tomorrow (General Anaesthetic) however he doesn’t like it at the Vets and although not aggressive will become fearful/anxious over injections etc
The Vets know all this and have in the past had to muzzle him for any injections he’s had (last time they only managed to administer half the booster jab) so we have said to them if they can while he’s under General Anaesthetic administer the other half of the booster jab & also the Kennel Cough vaccine.
AIBU to be overthinking about how they will administer him for General Anaesthetic? AIBU to think that he will become more stressed? My DH tells me to stop overthinking it all & the Vets have dealt with this before in many other nervous anxious dogs.
Should I tell the Vet about my worries or not? Thanks everyone

It’s not a big deal for the boys to be fair because their bits are on the outside it’s less traumatic than spaying but having said that I cried when I collected my boy as he was so disoriented and not himself at all

BoldBlueZebra · 07/09/2025 20:21

Oh and if you aren’t aware of the rules all threads about dogs must include picture of said dog

Mrsttcno1 · 07/09/2025 20:24

Does it help him at all if you’re there? If so you can always ask for him to be sedated while you are in the room & then you can leave once he is asleep

We have had a dose of gabapentin for ours before when he was going in but he wasn’t having a general so I’m not sure if that’s an option but certainly worth thinking about for any future visits

ML5 · 07/09/2025 20:31

Should I mention to Vets that I’m nervous and ask them how they intend to put the general anaesthetic in if he gets anxious/fearful?

I was also going to say about gabapentin but not sure about using it before general but they should give it to you for routine appointments
we have a single tablet in the cupboard on standby for our cat because she is so anxious at the vet
The first day is the worst because they are disoriented from the general and in a bit of pain. Ask for a stool softener, our poor boy had a terrible time trying to go to the toilet and ended up having an accident in the house. Wish we had asked for it because it wasn’t offered.
We got him a blow up collar instead of a cone because it was easier for him to get around and eat/drink
He will be fine though, try not to stress!

Hi my dog was neutered recently. They give them a pre.med before the anesthetic he got it on the back of his neck they didn't move him till he was sleepy they then put the anesthetic into his front leg, the vet might muzzle your dog, he will be OK,

Coffeeishot · 07/09/2025 20:44

We have a blow up collar on ours, and we try and rest him every few hours but tbf he has been self resting.

They should go through everything with you we had a pre op consultation before they took him to the clinic you will have form to sign and you can ask any questions.

BotterMon · 07/09/2025 20:46

Beautiful Springer. Mine (also a Springer) was done at 2. He was fine and is also anxious at the vets. They are used to handling all kinds of dogs. He'll be fine!

By all means talk to vets when you drop him off so they can reassure you.

FuzzyWolf · 07/09/2025 20:47

YANBU to be worried but your vet or a nurse should chat with you to go through the consent form and what the operation entails when you arrive at the surgery. Explain your worries and ask them any questions you have. They will be very happy to put your mind at rest and do what they can to make it less stressful for you both.

Your dog is gorgeous. I hope all goes well tomorrow.

Chester23 · 07/09/2025 20:49

I cant speak for a dog but my cat also hates the vets. He was perfectly fine. Infact, as always, anything they expect didnt really happen. He wanted to eat when he got home, he was playful as always. He didn't need a cone or anything, I kept an eye and he didn't seem bothered by it. Again not sure on dogs, but he had no stitches, was just small incision. He came home with painkiller but this gave him a bad stomach so he didn't have them.

Coffeeishot · 07/09/2025 20:51

My Dh was so nervous about our dog going he considered cancelling the whole thing!

vivainsomnia · 08/09/2025 08:57

I was so anxious too with my dog but the vet was great. They gave her something that made her fall asleep whilst cuddling in my arms and only took her when she was out of it. I then picked her up shortly after she was awake. She was absolutely fine and although she still dislike going to the vet and will shake like a leaf, she is not traumatised in any way.

Coffeeishot · 08/09/2025 09:06

I hope all goes well today @ML5

ML5 · 08/09/2025 09:41

Thanks everyone
Our dog is the first one getting neutered around 1030 today
We have bought him home for the moment so as not to make him more anxious/scared in crate at the Vets (unfamiliar surroundings) and are taking him back once the Vet gives us a call

We going to go have coffee/something to eat once we drop him off at Vets to take our minds off it - is this a good thing to do? My DH thinks we should come home but I’m more of the thinking we should to take our minds off it a bit. Vet updating is around 12pm

Go out have your coffee vet will phone you when he is ready, mine was away 4 hours but they phoned me when he was in recovery to tell me how it went and arranged a pick up time, I assume most vets will do similar, mine is back today to have a final check up.then he will be discharged

thismummyslife · 08/09/2025 10:07

Aww beautiful boy, I understand your concerns, he is just adorable but he’ll be fine, vets are very experienced with this and will look after him, he’ll soon be home getting cuddles and the memory will be far behind him! X

Didimum · 08/09/2025 10:35

Your DH is right in that they deal with this every week, if not every week. my sister's dog was absolutely tyrannical at the vet. The vet genuinely hated it. He had to be neutered at 7yrs old – they managed it!

I can sympathise with the worry – of whatever sort – my cat has to be neutered next week, and I'm worrying about all sorts! And reminding myself that vets are very capable people and neutering and GAs are ten a penny.
