Should I be worried about our dog getting neutered tomorrow

Hi everyone we have a 2 year old dog who is getting neutered tomorrow (General Anaesthetic) however he doesn’t like it at the Vets and although not aggressive will become fearful/anxious over injections etc
The Vets know all this and have in the past had to muzzle him for any injections he’s had (last time they only managed to administer half the booster jab) so we have said to them if they can while he’s under General Anaesthetic administer the other half of the booster jab & also the Kennel Cough vaccine.
AIBU to be overthinking about how they will administer him for General Anaesthetic? AIBU to think that he will become more stressed? My DH tells me to stop overthinking it all & the Vets have dealt with this before in many other nervous anxious dogs.
Should I tell the Vet about my worries or not? Thanks everyone

Our dog

Absolutely gorgeous.

We've just had our cocker spaniel spayed. She was quite subdued on the first day but soon perked up and was back to her turbo-powered self on the second.

We're taking her in for her second post-op check tomorrow but don't anticipate any problems. She's taken it all in her stride and I'm sure your doggy will as well.

I am glad it went smoothly, he will be as high as a kite bless him so quiet spot to sleep it off when he gets home,

Just a update, our dog seems not too bad very sleepy/not eating but drinking water (expected) but just to add when he got weighed he is 24.5kg which Vet says he should weigh 23kg so needs to lose weight. He is 2 & 5 months. Does this sound overweight?

He might lose a kg in his recovery and neutered males can put weight on apparently, I wouldn't worry for a kilogram.

redfairy · 08/09/2025 22:58

Ah glad it went well..Hopefully he will be his usual self after a good nights sleep. I wouldn't worry about his weight as it's not a great deal over. If he is having treats maybe check these for a while and see how he goes.

Another update - he seems very sleepy still but was shaking a bit but could this be a sign of Anesthetic wearing off? He’s fine now not shaking

It is probably just the medication mine was quite out of it for 48 hours , is he resting? Id maybe put an extra blanket where he is.

Yes, shaking is anesthetic wearing off he may also cry a bit. You are probably going to have to feed a bit less from now on. My friend has 2 male cocker spaniels, one neutered he is fed half the amount of the other. PS my border collie isn’t keen on vets, we’ve got a check up tomorrow, DH and I are more nervous than him, we do have to muzzle him, he just hates vet touching him.

Coffeeishot · 09/09/2025 08:29

Yes I've changed my cocker spaniels food they don't need as much.

Another update - we had to rush in our dog to the Vets today as he managed to take off his surgical suit & looked very red where he got neutered 😔
The Vets were unable to put back his surgical suit as our dog wouldn’t allow them to, so they tried the Cone and again he wouldn’t allow them to. The Vet nurse then said that the surgical suit looked big on him and it was put on him as they didn’t have any other sizes, they then tried to put the Cone on him but again that was about 3 times too big for him. The Vet nurse said that the surgical suit had urine on it from where our dog was going wee it was leaking on his neutered area which is why it went red. We now are having to monitor our dog so he doesn’t lick it (he occasionally will have a lick but we distract him then he does stop) however I work during the day but my DH is working from home (self employed) but can’t always watch his every movements but does his best to. AIBU to think that at our dogs Check Up appointment on Saturday we should voice our concerns more? Our dogs neutered area is not bleeding, inflamed but is red sore looking but the Vet Nurse said it was from when he was going wee from surgical suit being big on him. AIBU to change his Vets? Are we to blame for this or is the Vets?

It's your dog that should be worrying.

Our dog also peed in the suit and licked through it ended up with a cone in the end.
