To ask if you don’t work Monday…

Do you still get the Sunday blues just on another day, or does having Monday as a NWD cure this? I have a midweek day off and currently stuck between the pros and cons of a Monday vs Friday off.

I get Monday night blues instead. Sunday is my Saturday.

Thickasabrick89 · 07/09/2025 18:49

I don't get blues, i get excited for work!

Ghlp · 07/09/2025 18:50

Love my Monday off

Hellsbells89 · 07/09/2025 18:51

If you had Mondays off would you miss out on bank holidays? I’d have Friday then the bank holidays are extras

FuzzyWolf · 07/09/2025 18:52

Monday night blues.

I still get my bank holiday allowance to use at other times of the year.

Urm the other way I think it means I could use annual leave more flexibly as I’d have a couple of days to use elsewhere in the year

I’ve just gone back to working Mondays after five years of not and I hate it! I did get the Monday blues occasionally but not as sharply as I’m getting the Sundays now. Weekend feels far too short!

Cheepcheepcheep · 07/09/2025 18:56

And yes, Monday is the most advantageous from a holiday/leave perspective if your HR can handle working it out - I have had issues in the past.

jill5676 · 07/09/2025 18:57

I work Wed, Thu, Fri, love a Sunday night now (literally just said to DH how happy I am I don't have to think about packed lunch this evening), used to have the worst insomnia on a Sunday night but never do on a Tuesday. Maybe it's because after two lovely but exhausting days with a toddler, work on Wednesday feels like a break! Either way, I love it.

Nourishinghandcream · 07/09/2025 19:09

I worked a 4-day week for much of my working life and I generally took Fridays or Mondays off (other days less so) but for different reasons.
If I was going away to an event (I did this a lot) then I liked the Friday off as it meant I could get away either on the Thursday evening or Friday morning, both meant I enjoyed extra time at the venue. If I was having a (rare) weekend at home or we were just going away by ourselves we preferred the Monday off as most places got quieter on a Sunday evening and there was something "naughty" about not going into work on a Monday.

Definitely this!

I have Mondays off and I get the blues. But I get the blues overall 😄 which is weird as I do enjoy my job. Ugh I dunno. Don’t think I’m very good at it!

JLou08 · 07/09/2025 19:14

I don't find the blues as bad with a Monday off. The weekends used to feel do rushed and I was never ready for it to end when I worked Mondays, I'm so much more relaxed now. That is compared to working Monday-Friday though, I've never had a day off mid week.

RacingDriver · 07/09/2025 19:19

I love having Monday’s off. I don’t get Monday night blues (or at least not often) because I’ve had Monday too. It’s great to have time to myself, sort the house etc after the weekend as I then feel properly ready for the week and a bit more relaxed.

I also love the extra flexibility with holidays, the fact that I’m not desperate for it to be Friday all week and if people go out on a Friday I’m about.

The only downsides are most people do work Monday so not able to see friends as much as maybe a Friday and some shops/hair dressers etc aren’t open on a Monday so still have to fit that in elsewhere. Totally worth it though!

user1476613140 · 07/09/2025 19:21

I used to work shifts years ago so have absolutely no experience of this. Didn't realise it was a thing. I worked different shifts on different days each week.

CloverPyramid · 07/09/2025 19:27

I don’t mind my current job, so I don’t get the blues about starting the work week again on Tuesday. I only work 3 days a week though, which probably contributes to why I don’t dislike my job enough to get the blues.

Justcallmedaffodil · 07/09/2025 19:27

I don’t work Mondays or Fridays so every week is a long weekend. I still get the Monday night blues, probably moreso if anything because I always know my Tuesday mornings will be spent trawling through all the emails people have sent me while I’ve been off. I’m usually back in the swing of things by Tuesday lunchtime though.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/09/2025 19:32

Love my Monday off and bonus hours from

CoralOP · 07/09/2025 19:42

Definitely check how your work will calculate your holidays. I worked for a big company in HR and people who had Monday off were disadvantaged because of how they worked it out.
I didn't agree with it one bit but nothing I could do x

angelopal · 07/09/2025 19:45

Love having Mondays off. Monday evenings are busy for us so no time to get the blues. We don't get bank holidays other than Christmas and new year so not missing out.

If the ones we do get land on a Monday then I get the next working day off. Never want to give up my Mondays off.

FloraSpoke · 07/09/2025 19:56

Reading with interest as have just switched my NWD from Friday to Monday. Mainly for tactical reasons as in my role, if a bank holiday falls on your NWD you can take a day in lieu so you indirectly gain leave. But not all organisations apply that logic, so as pp have said, you need to check the position with HR. Also, my child has just started school and all the inset days seem to be Mondays…..When Friday was my NWD and I looked after my DC all day I enjoyed the sense of the weekend starting early: as DH is self-employed, we could head off for a weekend away on a Friday morning and have that sense of freedom. But now, that‘s not possible with DC in school. No Sunday night blues and I‘m fully relaxed on Monday morning after the weekend. Swings and roundabouts!

DesperatelySeekingHelp · 07/09/2025 19:57

I’m really fortunate that I like my job and my colleagues so no I don’t get the Monday night blues x

ElfAndSafetyBored · 07/09/2025 20:12

I love my Monday off. When you go in on a Tuesday, the week is well under way, then suddenly it is Wednesday - half way through the week.

And shops etc are quieter on a Monday than on a Friday.

But you still have a long weekend.

And yes, it’s better for bank holidays as you are still off that day but get extra leave to compensate.

I agree, sometimes if you work monday as eg a 3 day week you end up with much less holiday as you only get 3/5 of the holiday allowance for bank holidays and have to use you other days off because the office is closed.

dudsville · 07/09/2025 20:18

I don't think the blues are standard. I don't love my job, it's often a life or death scenario throughout the day and that gets me down, but I don't get the blues the night before going back to work. I don't know how or why, but I'm just living the moment and have always felt lucky about that. There are rare days where I anticipate having to do something extra stressful that's booked in for the next day, but that's rare. I don't practice mindfulness or things to help me focus on the here and now, but I think that is in effect what I do naturally. Can you try things like that?

SisterMargaretta · 07/09/2025 20:21

I used to work part-time Wednesday to Friday. I loved it as could properly enjoy family time at the weekends without thinking about work.
