To think that shoplifting is not my f#%*ing problem

I can't he the only one. I've never stolen a thing in my life.

I have had it up to here with the extra security measures in shops lately.

Today in Sainsburys, I went back to the aisles with my PAID FOR shopping, to check the price on the shelf l as I'd been overcharged SO actually Sainsbury's were stealing from me. As I went back through self-checkout area where I'd paid, my trolley wheels then locked 🙄

....Also, not long ago, I did some shopping in TK Maxx and boots and the alarm went off when leaving TK Maxx because the person on the till hadn't deactivated the security thing. We went back to the till and the security person WHO HAD BEEN STANDING THERE WATCHING US, came over and rifled through my bag. I told him some of the stuff was from boots and he said, no, he had to check that too. In the process, one of the items from boots costing £10 went missing. So TK Maxx actually stole from us.

I used to love TK Maxx but wont go there anymore now.

Shoplifting is NOT my problem, I don't do it and never have. I'm not a criminal and expect not to he treated like one. Shops who are happy to take your money but treat genuine customers like shit are in danger of scaring off people who are there to spend money, they'll just end up full of shoplifters. 🤷‍♀️

I think it’s a matter of time/slight improvements in robot picking technology before supermarkets (and other shops) move entirely to an order and collect model rather than allowing people to wander the shelves at will. Theft is a massive problem.

In the meantime if you’re going to do something suspicious and unusual like take a paid for trolley load of groceries back into the shop you really have to expect them to stop you and investigate.

I must look very suspicious then, I sometimes do three or four laps of Tesco to do my shopping (and sometimes go to the café) because I can only manage a basket over my arm with DS's buggy. It was a bit better when he was in his pram and I could put the basket on top.

I had something go off last year, didn't notice it was me until the security guard and a woman working there chased me down. The tag on the bracelet I bought hadn't deactivated when I put it through the till. But I dropped the bag I had a mug in and it smashed. They did replace it though. I was flustered and tired. Not a good combination.

Greenwitchart · 08/09/2025 08:16

I agree with you OP. I hate being made to feel like a criminal so I use small, independent shops as much as I can.

Crinkle77 · 08/09/2025 08:18

OP are you the Boots sample lady?

They had reasons to believe you’d shoplifted
they reasonably asked to check your bag
you refused

so… what happened next?

They had no reason to believe I had shoplifted because I hadn’t

Not reasonably, it was demanded

Well it didn’t look like that at all because I didn’t

they turned and walked away after I offered to watch CCTV with them while we waited for police

life is soooooo difficult when you stop unfounded accusations eh?

That will never happen. They make way more in impulse purchases than they lose by shoplifting.

then what?

Please empty your bag

no

repeat

then he turned and walked away

I’ve seen it happen to a very well to do lady too, poor woman emptied her bag with everyone staring

meanwhile a man carried a Henry hoover out without paying

DeeKitch · 08/09/2025 08:25

You may be entitled to compensation for being wrongly accused of shoplifting in the UK if the accusation caused you significant harm, such as emotional distress, reputational damage, or financial loss. To pursue compensation, you should first make a formal complaint to the supermarket, detailing the incident and the harm it caused.

And you think you deserve a “big” voucher?

Why not? Flowers and chocolates are given to customers for less

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 08/09/2025 08:31

Well for some unknown reason I set off the security alarms for pretty much every shop I walk out of, no idea why can't figure it out. Happens when I have a coat/ don't have a coat/ have my bag/ don't have my bag/ have my phone/ don't have my phone. There is no reason I can find as to why.
BUT I have not once been stopped or searched ever! I just keep walking it is only reading this thread that I realise security guards actually do take notice of them

jnh22 · 08/09/2025 08:31

Adelle79360 · 07/09/2025 17:31

Yeah I get you - shops have shit security most of the time in terms of hardly any staff and loads of self checkouts and then they want to rifle through your stuff instead of having the authority to stop actual shoplifters. It’s only happened to me once but it’s horrible feeling like you’re being accused of something you haven’t done.

This Is my thoughts exactly.

Self-checkouts with no staff and where people are supposed to police their own behaviour only work if people (and the society) have strict morals. We obviously don’t have that in the UK.

and as more people get away with theft, more people will think “fuck that, im
not going to lose out.”

The whole thing about security in some places not engaging shoplifters and letting g them leave adds fuel to the fire - and is bizarre.

But what they will do is stop people who don’t look like they’re going to cause problems. And I do think it’s done purposefully - they’d rather piss off a compliant customer because it’s easier than stopping an actual thug.

i think society actually needs to stop being so tolerant of everyone and all behaviours.

Yes

Digdongdoo · 08/09/2025 08:33

DeeKitch · 08/09/2025 08:32

Yes

When? By whom?

Ellmau · 08/09/2025 08:33

What was the £20 a week taken off benefits?

Poster means the food cost £20 more than it would have online, and the person only had their benefit money to pay it out of.

DeeKitch · 08/09/2025 08:33

Digdongdoo · 08/09/2025 08:33

When? By whom?

Large supermarkets, if a customer has XYZ issue

Dogosaurus · 08/09/2025 08:33

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/09/2025 08:05

You really didn't need to say you are a bloke. What an arse.

Edited

😂 I was thinking the same. These blokes that post to place themselves as the ‘hero’ of the story. I bet the shop staff just thought what a fucking nobhead, yet this man comes on mumsnet to tell a load of women his tale like he’s some sort of hero standing up for justice in Lidl with his ‘bloke here’ opener. 🤮😂

Maverickess · 08/09/2025 08:34

DeeKitch · 08/09/2025 08:01

Yes entitled definitely

being stopped and embarrassed in front of shoppers and 100% paid for items

compensate me and concentrate on on actual shoplifters

Please give a full and detailed description of a shoplifter in the context of having moments to do so, so that they can be reliably identified without there being any chance, ever, that
a) a shoplifter will not be stopped because they appear like a paying customer and
b) a paying customer will not be stopped ever, under any circumstances.

I don't believe this will happen - because most people buy so much stuff in the supermarket that wasn't on their list but just took their fancy as they browsed. That's why it's always a mistake to shop when you're hungry!

It would cost the shops a fortune in lost sales

TheaBrandt1 · 08/09/2025 08:35

Everytime I go to Sainsbury’s the trolley wheels lock. I dont shop there anymore it’s too stressful.
