To think that shoplifting is not my f#%*ing problem

I can't he the only one. I've never stolen a thing in my life.

I have had it up to here with the extra security measures in shops lately.

Today in Sainsburys, I went back to the aisles with my PAID FOR shopping, to check the price on the shelf l as I'd been overcharged SO actually Sainsbury's were stealing from me. As I went back through self-checkout area where I'd paid, my trolley wheels then locked 🙄

....Also, not long ago, I did some shopping in TK Maxx and boots and the alarm went off when leaving TK Maxx because the person on the till hadn't deactivated the security thing. We went back to the till and the security person WHO HAD BEEN STANDING THERE WATCHING US, came over and rifled through my bag. I told him some of the stuff was from boots and he said, no, he had to check that too. In the process, one of the items from boots costing £10 went missing. So TK Maxx actually stole from us.

I used to love TK Maxx but wont go there anymore now.

Shoplifting is NOT my problem, I don't do it and never have. I'm not a criminal and expect not to he treated like one. Shops who are happy to take your money but treat genuine customers like shit are in danger of scaring off people who are there to spend money, they'll just end up full of shoplifters. 🤷‍♀️

So go to small local shops and independents that have no security... life is full of choices you are free to make.

Chompingatthebeat · 07/09/2025 16:29

Are those occurences really that common? Could you try online shopping?

PinkyFlamingo · 07/09/2025 16:33

Shoplifting is absolutely rife. Shops need to do everything they can as losses are huge. If you haven't shoplifted then you have nothing to worry about really.

Chompingatthebeat · 07/09/2025 16:36

I don't speed either, and yet speed bumps exist.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/09/2025 16:37

Unfortunately, shoplifting is everyone’s problem, @ShoveItUpYourArseMargaret, because we all pay for it. A percentage of the price we pay for anything in the shops is to cover shrinkage - loss due to breakage, spoilage and theft. This is coming out of your pocket and mine.

Lucy5678 · 07/09/2025 16:39

I think it’s a matter of time/slight improvements in robot picking technology before supermarkets (and other shops) move entirely to an order and collect model rather than allowing people to wander the shelves at will. Theft is a massive problem.

In the meantime if you’re going to do something suspicious and unusual like take a paid for trolley load of groceries back into the shop you really have to expect them to stop you and investigate.

You’re saying you’re not a criminal, but how do shops know that? They don’t know you. I guess everyone who shoplifts will absolutely deny doing it initially.

Adelle79360 · 07/09/2025 17:31

Yeah I get you - shops have shit security most of the time in terms of hardly any staff and loads of self checkouts and then they want to rifle through your stuff instead of having the authority to stop actual shoplifters. It’s only happened to me once but it’s horrible feeling like you’re being accused of something you haven’t done.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 07/09/2025 17:36

Yanbu but mn will come for you 😬

Edit, during the pandemic, the asda smart price food was not available online, forcing Britain's poorest, who were more likely to be clinically vulnerable, to spend more on food.

They made record profits whilst the poorest saw £20 a week taken off of their benefits.

Now theyre trying to convince people that the prices go up because people steal 😄😄

I will never give one shit about someone stealing. I'll literally look the other way and mind my business 🥰🥰

Can you please link the legislation that says we are now guilty until proven innocent in the UK. id like to see when it changed from vice versa Thanks

theresapossuminthekitchen · 07/09/2025 17:40

Yeah, in principle you’re right, but in these particular cases, they weren’t being unreasonable to check you. I thought you were going to be talking about having to scan your receipt when you leave, which is particularly annoying when you haven’t bought anything, or something like that.

I wanted to check of sainsbury's has some school trousers in stock.

But thought better of it. You need a recipt to get out and with two kids n toe couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

It was like going through the barriers in a cage. And haven't been in that sainsbury's before and didn't want to be bothered with the process of getting out again.

Digdongdoo · 07/09/2025 17:48

I think they were very reasonable to check you on those occasions. You looked like you were walking out without paying. I'm also sure they didn't steal your £10 Boots item, nobody's job is worth that I promise. Don't take it so personally. And given how rife shoplifting is and how on alert shops need to be, perhaps modify your behaviour a little so it doesn't happen again.

ScholesPanda · 07/09/2025 17:52

Shoplifting, or 'leakage' adds to the cost of your shopping as does shops having to spend money on security. Shoplifters literally cost honest people money.

I've been stopped once in the past five years, and whilst inconvenient, it was quickly dealt with and I was on my way with profuse apologies.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/09/2025 17:55

I didn't know they could lock your trolley wheels 😐

Branster · 07/09/2025 18:03

It's tedious OP. I'm sick of it myself.
Shops need to improve security without annoying the majority of shoppers like you and me.
We're the ones paying for the losses due to shoplifting and we also pay for the security measures they are randomly implementing.
Their staff get paid ridiculously low wages.
Supermarkets made an absolute fortune during the pandemic.
I utter dislike most supermarket shopping trips. Most of the times I go yo the self checkout because it's quicker.
From the moment you enter the shop to the moment you leave you have to put up with, often, a mediocre shopping experience and the additional suspicion with their stupid cameras at self checkout, stupid barriers and everything else. For a stupid weekly shop which is becoming more and more expensive. I rarely go to m&s nowadays because of the whole faff. Sainsbury's used to be my favourite but I can't be bothered anymore. Tesco and Morrisons are both as bad as each other. At least at lidl I don't expect much to start with and waitrose is still OK.
Boots is an absolute joke and haven't used them in a very long. Their website is also unreliable and I can't be the only one who has stopped shopping there.

Fargo79 · 07/09/2025 18:10

So you'd like shops to just not take any meaningful measures to prevent shoplifting? They're hardly likely to take the hit on their profits, so if somehow security measures like wheel locks on trolleys or security checks were outlawed, they'd just hike the prices massively to cover the losses.

I'd rather deal with a bit of mild inconvenience maybe once a year than pay raised prices for all my goods permanently.

LlynTegid · 07/09/2025 18:10

If you didn't vote or voted Tory in elections between 2010 and 2019 you have supported the police being reduced and the courts being ineffective. These have contributed.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 07/09/2025 18:13

The price of each item comes up on the screen. Why not call someone over at that point to get it checked whilst you carry on scanning the rest of your shopping? That will save you going back in and having to then queue up for a refund
