"UK must actively prepare for war"

RealPerson · 05/09/2025 20:07

The government has said, "For the first time in many years, there is a need to prepare for direct threats to the UK homeland, potentially in a wartime scenario"

I have been thinking about a potential nuclear war with people living through it. It seems to be a topic that is no longer categorized as a sci- fi storyline. AIBU ?

The government are trying to justify something. Don’t watch the news, get offline and use the nice bubble bath, just in case.

LimbOnTheBranchBranchOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheBog · 05/09/2025 20:26

I would take 95% of what the government say with a huge pinch of salt.

Eileen101 · 05/09/2025 20:27

Is there a news article where this is said to link to pls @RealPerson ?

😂😂😂😂😂

They want us to get into the mindset of war probably, but if nobody shows up they are a bit fucked aren't they?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 05/09/2025 20:28

I think they are right. We have North Korea, China and Russia actively working together to destabilise Europe and the US.

Fearfulsaints · 05/09/2025 20:37

I think there has been lot of wars but they havent been nuclear and nuckear has been an option my whole life time. So whilst I think war is likely, I lean towards unlikely nuclear.

But I dont really see how i am supposed to prepare for war and I sort of assume the government is always preparing?

GarlicPint · 05/09/2025 20:38

We're already under massive digital attack. It might not sound like much, but everything relies on the internet to the extent that we'd be well and truly fucked if it all went down at once. The govt has beefed up our digital defence force (can't remember what it's called) and apparently it's kept very busy.

Yes, it is better to keep a couple of weeks' worth of basic supplies on hand. Rotate stocks so they don't get out of date. Hope you never need to use them all.

I hope there isn't a large-scale nuclear attack - nowhere to shelter and I live in the back of beyond, so would be more at danger from the fallout and aftermath than a strike: I'd rather be carbonised on the spot than battling with a "When the wind blows" scenario!

I wouldn't worry too much. A nuclear winter would mean that even if a bomb wasn't anywhere near you the resultant environmental impact wouldn't see you last any longer than 12 months. It's so far out of our control that there's no sense wasting energy on it.

basinbasin · 05/09/2025 20:48

When did they say this?

basinbasin · 05/09/2025 20:49

if it's nuclear I want to go in the blast

RealPerson · 05/09/2025 20:53

@basinbasin recently I believe at the same time there is a UN meeting happening

You can't really prepare for war in this country. Its different in America where they have land, guns and a climate where you can actually grow food. Even if you are one of the lucky ones in the UK with land and storage space, unless you have an arsenal of weapons to defend it someone will come along and take it from you.

Where on earth have you picked up that bit of disinformation? There is zero evidence of tactical nuke use in Ukraine

ThatWaryOchreQuoter · 05/09/2025 21:19

All this government seem to do is lie, I really wouldn’t take any notice of them.

Morningswim · 05/09/2025 21:25

Part of this is to ensure there is public support for increased spending on Defence.

But also, I am surprised how many people don't appreciate what was said up thread - We're already under massive digital attack.

Absentmindedsmile · 05/09/2025 21:27

God the internet and social media have a Lot to answer for. 🙈

How do you mean?

OonaStubbs · 05/09/2025 21:32

I think we should adopt the US approach and change the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of War.

Thanks for this. I'd been under the impression they were used and that was what hit Chernobyl. This is probably untrue.

RandomNameChange52 · 05/09/2025 21:34

We also 'actively prepare for' all the nuclear power stations blowing up. Doesn't mean its going to happen.

OnSecondThoughts · 05/09/2025 21:36

I honestly think the government will do this about 3 months before the next election in order to postpone it. It's about their only card left to stop Reform.

LoztWorld · 05/09/2025 21:38

As another poster said, it’s just so we’ll accept ridiculous amounts being spent on defence.

I don’t want war. Do you want war?
