Can someone explain 5am airport drinking?

I'm not asking this as a kill joy or teetotaler, I enjoy a drink on holiday as much as anyone but how are people able to stomach pints at 5am?

Been on holiday recently and could barely eat before flight yet everyone else had pints/ g&t etc. It wasn't even mid morning it was 5am

I think most people travelling on the 6.25 am to Frankfurt are business travellers.

Londontown12 · 04/09/2025 11:02

Way too early ! And a headache when u finally arrive at destination deffo not worth it I usually have a glass of wine with my evening meal on holiday ! Very rarely change habits while I’m away I don’t find drinking that appealing tbh though so that’s just me I guess, I think everyone is so different in life I think let people enjoy themselves however they like as long as no one is hurting anyone else ❤️

Nope. Thankfully my bladder has adjusted to me being a filthy alcoholic (AKA two glasses of prosecco) over the years so I can hold it in for hours 😃

I do drink BTW, just not at 5am (or haven't done so for many years) 😁

Fair point, but the people I’ve seen drinking at that time (and drinking several glasses) look prematurely aged and dog rough, so a bit more likely to cause problems on flights than your average “I’ll have one g&t to steady my nerves before take off” drinker.

Oh dear

Of course there's never ever ever been a case of a well heeled business or even First Class passenger causing serious difficulties on board a flight because they have had maybe one or two G&Ts,.perhaps combined with medication to try get them through the flight.

Frankly the secret drinkers / pill poppers can sometimes be a bigger problem than those who are quite open with their one or two beers.

Very sad and grim. And rather pathetic. I always look at those people and hope they’re not on my flight.

And if hope you weren't on mine either. People do all sorts of things I can't stand, like eating McDonald's or reading the Daily Mail, but I really don't mind if they're on the same plane as me.

Because some people associate holidays with being continuously pissed. You don't see anyone in the lounge waiting for the 06.25 to Frankfurt doing it. Not too hard to understand.

Again. Having a drink does not equal pissed. Less still ‘continuously pissed’.

Not my experience. There’s always a wide variety of people having a drink at whatever time.

Why would anyone have a headache from a drink or two?
Fair enough if you don’t find it appealing, but it doesn’t have the dire physical effects some are suggesting on here - constant weeing, hangover, rough behaviour etc. for most of us.

Treeteas · 04/09/2025 11:12

You only see those who are drinking too. There are many more in the airports who aren’t. Lots of lads/girls trips nowadays too which I think is always going to involve drinking.

The "rough" really made me laugh that poster clearly meant common 🤣

?!?!? Wow that's some leap to make!!! So nobody flying to Germany ever has a drink at the airport? Ok good to know 🤔

I've literally never seen anyone availing themselves of the free booze in the BA lounge at LHR while waiting for an early morning flight. Not once, in decades of taking early morning flights. At lunchtime/afternoon/evening sure. But I've never seen morning drinkers in there.

RampantIvy · 04/09/2025 11:15

I know a few people who have given up drinking because a drink or two does give them a headache.

I don't care if people want a drink or two before a flight, but I wouldn't want to be on a flight with very pissed and disruptive passengers.

We tend to fly to relatively boring places and have managed to not have this problem on any flights so far.

GabriellaMontez · 04/09/2025 11:16

Everyone is different and likes different things to you. Thats the explanation.

You cannot be serious 😆We fly regularly and use the lounge every time and there are ALWAYS people drinking no matter what time of day it is! Yes of course there are people who aren't but to say you've never seen anyone having an alcoholic drink at the airport in the morning is complete and utter tosh 😂

Well exactly. Most people who have a drink in the airport don’t become a massive issue on the plane. I agree that anyone showing up obviously drunk should be denied boarding and that stewards should take a view on serving alcohol to anyone who later shows signs of being drunk - because if safety aspects apart from anything else.
I assume people who react badly to alcohol don't drink at all, so they won’t be the ones having a drink, quite self evidently. That would be silly. So are you suggesting the people talking about headaches and hangovers from an airport drink think everyone reacts like that? Or that people just decide to have a headache and drink when they normally wouldn’t?

That looks a lot like a personal attack. You can’t go round calling posters alcoholic.

Onthebusses · 04/09/2025 11:23

Cause pints are ace and it is my civic duty.

I would be willing to bet that very, very few of the people on a weekday 06.25 to Frankfurt are going there on holiday.

Exactly my point.

gamerchick · 04/09/2025 11:25

Holiday starts at the airport. Passes the time I think.

I personally can't drink that time of the morning though unless I'm still up.

BlueMilkshake · 04/09/2025 11:28

I used to work 12 hour shifts, days or nights
Finish shift
Short journey to airport
Some people started their holiday at the airport
Long haul flight
No driving upon landing

I do not drink alcohol on long flights, however I know some people that do

Some people drink to help them sleep after working nights

Animatic · 04/09/2025 11:28

Imagine the pain of waking up at 3/4am to be in airport by 5am :)

It's really not - I fly at least twice a month (was more frequent before COVID) and have never seen people drinking early morning weekdays (I usually fly on a Monday) in either lounge at T5. Big queues for the coffee machines, no-one at the free bar. I will make sure to check on Monday morning (FRA again...). Maybe it's different in the Concorde Room, but I'm never in first so wouldn't know.
