Can someone explain 5am airport drinking?

I'm not asking this as a kill joy or teetotaler, I enjoy a drink on holiday as much as anyone but how are people able to stomach pints at 5am?

Been on holiday recently and could barely eat before flight yet everyone else had pints/ g&t etc. It wasn't even mid morning it was 5am

Because you’ll be impaired if there’s an emergency, you’ll be inconveniencing your fellow passengers unless you’re in a window seat?

It's an offence most places to be actually drunk on board an aircraft but I wouldn't be too concerned about someone who has drunk a couple of pints or a couple of G&Ts when it comes to evacuations, donning oxygen masks etc.

The bigger problem is those who have knocked themselves out with medication (hence the increasing reluctance by GPs to medicate for fear of flying) and those who would insist on taking their handbaggage in the event of an evacuation.

My stomach seems to take time to wake up, don't know why
So does mine.
I can't face eggs, a fry up or many other things before noon.
I have to keep it simple and light.

You're being dramatic 🙄

Drinking should not be allowed in an airport full stop. What if there’s an emergency and you’re impaired? It’s selfish behaviour.

People impaired shouldn’t fly. Having one or two drinks doesn’t make you impaired enough to be an issue in an emergency.

You don’t think it would be impossible to wake someone from a sleep aided by two drinks doesn’t you? She’s asleep, not unconscious and insensible. I imagine the emergency itself would wake her. If not I’m sure a nudge would.

Agreed.

I'm not knocking people being safety aware, actually listening to safety briefs but I think some posters think in the event of an emergency they'll be required to be superwoman or superman.

Reality is, with the minor exception of self help exits they will be told and directed as to what to do, possibly very loudly, by the professionals on board.

I suspect most people who alcohol wise are fit to drive could manage that.

It's sad. A nice cup of tea or coffee would be better.

How is it sad?
A nice cup of tea or coffee would be better for what?
Where are you getting nice tea or coffee in an airport anyway? It’s usually grim, while the alcohol is the same as everywhere else.

Brianthepug · 06/09/2025 12:15

My usual airport mode is a cooked breakfast, cuppa and a Bacardi and coke before the flight. Am not even a huge drinker , but seem to like one before a flight. I don't bother ON the flight unless it's long haul and I want to sleep. Saying that, I didn't have my airport drink last month. Queue was horrendous, and wasn't that bothered.

Sad that you need alcohol full stop let alone at 5am.
All alcohol at airports should be banned anyway.
Nobody would die without it and it would be less worry all round.
The amount of shitty behaviour on planes due to drinking is increasing.

Vitriolinsanity · 06/09/2025 12:38

I can say with utter certainty that a plane emergency would snap me out of my pre-flight mimosa snooze very effectively.

It must be the flights you go on
I fly 5 times a year, never seen any issues

What if you don't like hot drinks?

Imo there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a bit of what you fancy to start your holiday, whatever that might be

Do you understand the difference between a need and a want?
Selling alcohol at airports doesn’t make people worry or lead to shitty behaviour. People too drunk to behave should be denied entry to planes. The rest of us are more than capable of having a nice drink and behaving both properly and safely.

Well no, me neither. I’m not sure where all these people sho are so pissed they disrupt the flight and would be a danger in an emergency are flying to. Or why airlines are letting them board - they dont have to. There are clear signs to that effect in airports.

You don't have to see it to know it's going on, it's in the papers.

There are some lovely cold drinks out there.

ShanghaiDiva · 06/09/2025 14:22

I was at Bristol airport last month and saw passengers with alcoholic drinks at before 5am. I assumed they were nervous flyers or starting the holiday early. I couldn’t face anything (food or drink ) at that time in the morning.

It’s in the papers because it’s very unusual - that’s what makes it news. And airlines could stop it by refusing boarding to drunk passengers, as is their right. Stopping everyone else from having a drink or two in departures is unnecessary (and rather draconian).
