Buying house - homeless outside

Whatinthedoopla · 03/09/2025 21:21

Hi,

I'm buying a house, and opposite the garden is the community car park. Area is lovely, people are lovely. However, I've noticed thpere has been a van parked right outside the garden (obviously in a parking space), and has been there for weeks. I thought nothing of it, then saw they they open the door and it looks like people live in it! And they look homeless, I saw they legs popping out of the van.

The house has now been emptied, and I'm worried that the homeless people are going into the garden to get water from the tap outside.

My partner isn't worried, but I am, or AIBU?

What should I do?

That defeats the object of choosing van life which is (in most cases) a choice rather than necessity

From experience I think it's more often necessity than choice; it's not all Instagram-worthy vans and digital nomads, there are just an awful lot of people who are priced out of housing, so a boat or a van is the only option.

Just because people are making the best of their available options and sharing tips and experiences ('van life') doesn't mean it was their first choice.

I can't understand all the people saying, they've chosen that lifestyle! It's acting homeless outside someone's house! I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't want it in front of their house!

This is exactly it, it's the home I'm planning to live in for the next 5 years, so I am planning to sell up at some point, so they might put off the next buyer too

Could Surveyor be asked to help/inform over this CP aspect?

Wouldn't they just check the house? I'm not really sure if they would know

Knock on the window op and tell the riff raff to piss off as they’re making the place look untidy…

LivingWithANob · 05/09/2025 15:07

Just because they are living in a van doesnt mean theyre going to be a nuisance you know. I think in all honesty, we will see much more of people doing this in the future. Rents are ridiculous. As long as the vehicle is taxed, mot’d and insured, its allowed to be on the public highway, outside of your house or not.

i thought this was going to be a post regarding a house opposite a homeless shelter where there are regular homeless hanging around outside in various states. We have one locally and a house is up for sale opposite that. They may have trouble selling it

They look at all things that impact house & surroundings, like looking for ‘unknown’ public rights of way etc. It can’t hurt to ask them, they have all sorts of suggestions up their sleeves 🤔.

crackofdoom · 05/09/2025 15:52

Of course, if it turns out they're parked up there because one of your new neighbours is their friend/ relative and they're using their bathroom and water, and the whole neighbourhood knows they're there and has no problem with it and you get them moved on, you could end up making yourself mighty unpopular before you've even moved in...

The main thing that will put off any future buyer of your house will be that it's opposite a car park. I'd bet a packet that the van will be long gone by then.

Literally only the community use it, and it's a lovely area. I don't know what you are imagining

Communities don't stay the same forever, developers move in, carparks close, people get pissed and throw up or urinate, you've no idea what the future could be.

They might have chosen that lifestyle. Many people do. And just because they live in a van, doesn’t mean they are going to do anything wrong!
you could just go and say hello to them!

Only do this if you want to get stabbed. What a very idiotic and naive thing to say. Don't do this!

That’s so rude! I’m from the van community, I don’t live in one but spend much of my time in it. Please give me one example. Just one example of where a van lifer has stabbed someone!! You’re at your comment is so ignorant it begs belief

Can I ask you why this person doesn't leave their van?

He is very dirty, looks homeless, and never wants to be seen. He looks like he only goes out at night.

What could the reason be?

How do we know without asking him,you could call your local street homelessness charities who could talk to him.

I wasn't talking about people in vans specifically, I was talking about approaching any homeless looking person and striking up a conversation with them. Are you seriously asking me to give you an example of when a homeless person stabbed someone in the UK? 🤣

MissMoneyFairy · 05/09/2025 20:57

If youre asking about the van by the house how do you know he only goes out at night.

No- a van lifer.

GreenLemonade · 05/09/2025 21:09

I find it surprising so many people are saying they wouldn't have a problem with someone living in a van outside of their house. It would massively put me off the property.

Is the rest of him very dirty or just the legs? I’m curious how you’ve seen so much of him if he only leaves the van at night. Are you shining a torch on him?

First it was people, now its one man. First the van was there for weeks then only a week. No mention of how op knows he only goes out at night. The whole story is beginning to sound very odd.
