Would you go out for the day to a place one hour and forty minutes away, so drive there for one hour, forty mins, spend the day there and then the same back-with a 6 year old? Or would you make a weekend out of it
Do you consider that a lot for one day?

I wouldn't even without a 6yrs old involved. :)

Under 2 hours absolutely fine.

I am completely baffled by this. I've only come across this mindset on mumsnet where people think that anything further than 30 mins away is a huge deal. My nearest retail park with decent shops and supermarket is over an hour away. My closest city is an hour and a half from where I live. I do both of these journeys at least 2 or 3 times a month with children and have done since they were babies. Why on earth would you need to do overnight for such a short drive?

To maximise the flexibility you leave yourself for starting, leaving, and spending time there, as explained in previous posts - particularly if you are working around things like kids' mealtimes, bedtimes, rush hour traffic, etc.

If you're only going to the shops then this is less likely to be a factor. If you are seeing family who you could stay with at no cost then it's more likely to factor in.
